RD Bode Wilde (2018, 41st, NYI)

If he gets past Buffalo at 32 there is no way he gets by the Red Wings at 33.

Wings will have had an outstanding draft and still have another impact pick to make at 36.

Taken by Isles at 41.... what were the off ice problems the commentators mentioned besides just de-committing to 2 universities and opting for Juniors?

Needless to say with my earlier post today. I love this pick. Very surprised he fell to #41 to the Isles. Isles killing this draft. Lamoriello is a good luck charm.

That was it.
I'm not sure that was it. They heavily implied that the issues that came up were only made clear because of due diligence that in the past probably would have been over looked, decommitting to universities is pretty public. Reads to me like personal issues

The reason why he dropped is his awful WJC18 tournament, and poor decision making. in the tournament, he created turnovers most of the time he tried things offensively.

maybe instead of Jr (next year) he can play in Europe? would be a great experience. when i was 18, i would have jumped at the chance to play pro hockey in a place like Amsterdam... ;)
If he decided to play pro hockey in Amsterdam I'd be pretty concerned for the Islanders. Compared to other culturally-similar countries in their region the Netherlands is a hockey black hole- I've never understood it, and unlike Norway or Denmark it doesn't seem like there's even a spark there threatening to catch on. I was staying at a friend-of-a-friend's house in Rotterdam and sports came up, and I mentioned that the two sports I really cared about were hockey and football. She knew that as an American I meant American football and she had a basic knowledge of the game, but said that hockey wasn't very big there and she didn't even know the rules. This led to a pretty confused exchange until I realized that she thought I was talking about field hockey! Ice hockey is so unfamiliar to the Dutch that this girl assumed I was talking about field hockey, which is still only about as 'popular' as it is over here.

Amsterdam is a great city though, no reason he can't play somewhere in hockeyland where he can visit by train!

field hockey is popular in the netherlands. It is still a niche sport, but i don't know a country where field hockey is more popular than there. It is hockey there.

NHL network kept hinting that Wilde fell because off ice issues and a particular rumor circulating.

Can anyone elaborate?

I heard that there are no character issues, so I am assuming it must be something else. You don't drop from 15 to 41 because you decommitted 2 times and decided to play major juniors...

It burns off a year of his elc

Actually if he played 2 years in the AHL without playing more then 9 games in the NHL each season, then no years of his ELC would be burnt off.

An example of this would be that Nylander played in the AHL as a 19 year old and that didn't burn a season of his ELC

And I suspect thats why he dropped.

But the Isles have had a great draft. Completely destroyed your NY rivals, as far as I'm concerned.
Not only that but he's brain dead and has no semblance of a defensive game, particularly defensive zone positioning and IQ.

There is a rule if you play in the CHL you can't send a player to the AHL after you draft him(till he is 20). Since he hasn't played in the CHL yet we have the option to send him to the AHL. All that being said given how rough around the edges Wilde's game is the CHL is probably the right choice.

It should be noted since he joined the CHL after he was drafted the Islanders I do believe have the option to send him to the AHL in 19/20.
You do, see Sonny Milano and Connor Carrick for the precedence in a similar situation.

Thanks for verifying that. All that being said I do think Wilde probably will need 2 years in the CHL unless he has an amazing season coming up. He seems to have enough warts in his game he needs to clean up and I don't think the AHL is his best option

Then why don't players do this?

The way the Sound Tigers are playing he'd be ruined by going there. It's much better if he gets some time and confidence in Saginaw.

Have you watched him play other than the WJC18? Because thats the sense I get from many of the Wilde experts.

I had Wilde as a top 10 player. I've been watching him play for two years. I'm not going to downgrade him that much based on one bad tournament where I thought the coach did him no favors in the role he played. I think the Isles made a tremendous pick here, and I think they had a tremendous draft.

But I don't think the OHL is the answer for where you want this guy playing.

Ryan Merkley with far more character issues, and defensive issues went in the first round. this kid shouldn't have dropped to where he did despite my concerns over him...I have no clue how Merkley goes in the top 25, and this kid slips into the early 40s.

I think its size. It actually is now a disadvantage to be a bigger defensemen with the draft. Merkley gets tabbed as a potential offensive dynamo. Wilde is just a guy with a lot of tools, according to most people, even though he put up the fifth most points in a season for a defensemen out of the NTDP.

Even if you completely write Wilde off defensively, which I wouldn't do yet, he still is a top-flight OFD based on his offensive ability and production.

ranked him 14th on my list (oops) entirely off of his production

me and you have had our conversations on most of these kids, it seemed like most of the bigger defenders went lower than they should have, even Bouchard and Dobson went lower than projected. trends are just so stupid and this draft proved there is a legitimate trend hurting bigger defenders.

Miller went right around where I thought he would go, but he somehow gets a pass over Wilde when I have watched Miller make worse plays than Wilde on a more frequent basis. I am pretty confident Wilde will be the better NHLer than Miller.

We both have backed M Samuelsson the entire year, Buffalo got a kid that should have gone 10-15 picks earlier...I think teams are forgetting there are still HUNDREDS of 6'2/6'3 forwards playing in the NHL...still need guys that can shut them down, clear them out, and PK...
