Sproul can't skate either. That holds him back big time. Smith, don't remind me.

I think we are seeing the extremes of Wilde's bad play recently. He wasn't this bad all season. Bad time to play your worst hockey of the season, in your biggest tournament of the season where the most people watch. But there should be perspective on that. And I think the people who are paid to watch him and other prospects, will have watched him play other games this season, and realized that this is not his normal play. Fans who only watch the big tournaments will overreact, thats what they do, its why they aren't experts. I also think Appert's bad coaching plays a big role. Wilde is someone who needs to be coached up, he needs a good coach who can develop his game. He's by no means good defensively or has good hockey sense, but Appert's coaching makes it look worse.

I don't think its that he has to go from a bad hockey sense player to Nick Lidstrom, its making improvements over 3-4 years to not have it as a weakness of his game. If it can become average, and then he has the size, skating, offense to go with it, I think something like a PK Subban game is possible from him. Subban doesn't have such great hockey sense, he makes dumb plays, but he's limited the bad plays to an amount that allows the rest of his game to overshadow the dumb plays. I also think Wilde has defensive potential. He can have some nice defensive shifts, he's big, he's physical, but he's incredibly inconsistent in that regard. The raw defensive tools are there, as is the skating and offensive tools.

Ive compared Wilde to Subban many times too. Another encouraging aspect is that hes at times really good defensively and that a lot of his mistakes are because hes always thinking offensively.

Hes a very coachable player.

so the fans that questioned or had concerns about his "decision making" or in general his "iq" skills have a solid point. There is really no arguing this. This graph does not show his give aways or turn overs or his lack of iq, but it sure as heck shows he struggles big time in his own zone, defensively and and his struggles "controlling" the exit plays, which is so key for a so called offensive dman.

I am on the cautioning side of picking this guy with any significant high pick. His defensive game is truly a mess.

2018 draft eligible U.S. defenceman Bode Wilde is not going to the University of Michigan next season. He will get drafted and see what his non-school options are. Saginaw owns his OHL rights.

That's pretty interesting. Wasn't he committed to Harvard before committing to Michigan?

I wonder if this has to do with not getting invited to the USA junior camp?

well, he officially wants to continue to suck in his own end if he heads to the OHL...the league that developed DeAngelo and Merkely...stay in school kid!!

I kid...I kid...I love the OHL, just for Wilde, I think he would do better at Michigan or another college program to help work on his game with more practices and x's and o's...

If he doesn't go the NCAA route can he go to the AHL for the team that drafted him instead of the OHL?

I know Corey Pronman dropped him from 16th to 19th on June 7thL
UPDATED (June 7): Initially ranked No. 16, changes made after learning about off-ice and conditioning issues.

I wouldn't want that defensive dumpster fire on my AHL team
I feel it depends on the team. I think he could have a similar impact as Liljegren. If Toronto drafted Bode Wilde and played him on the Marlies next year, I’d be very confident Sheldon Keefe could work with him.

He had a tough year. He's got a lot of offensive/physical gifts but needs a lot of refinement in his own zone

He really didn't have a bad year. He had a bad WJC-18, but since the majority of this forum doesn't watch these draftable players outside a select few tournaments, that might as well count as a full season in the evaluation of some.

Yes, because it's not like an 18-year-old Bode Wilde will develop much more than your run of the mill AHL vet

You sound so entitled. You'd rather guys with no chance of making the NHL play for your AHL team than Wilde.

If you think Wilde is a first rounder, which maybe you don't, he really shouldn't be out of place in the AHL. Might not be the best AHL'er right away. Some guys play in the AHL at 18 and can barely keep up, but if Wilde really couldn't keep up on a 3rd or 4th pair in the AHL, he's not any good.

And I don't think thats the case. He has things to work on, but he'd put up a lot of points in the AHL, and physically he can obviously keep up in that league. I'm sure he'd have issues initially with the defensive game and bad decision making, but there are not many players in that league who are good at everything, so it really shouldn't be something that keeps him from playing next season in the AHL.

I don't see Wilde as a first rounder, you're right.

And his defensive game just isn't up to snuff for the AHL- there isn't even such thing as a fourth pair. There are so many players I see with higher outright potentials, and who don't lack hockey IQ and are as plagued with defensive blunders as Wilde.

Just my opinion though.

If you've got a good AHL and development team it's probably not a bad idea to get him in house and start developing him

Except that he would be eaten alive by AHL players.

Doesn't matter how good your development team is, he's not ready for that level. Few 17-18 year olds are.
