What’s your barometer for “enough”? Since you appear to be the arbiter of 2023 NHL Draft defensemen
I never used "enough" in a sentence and i'm not the arbitrer i'm just wondering why ASP would have people thinking he's the best defenseman of the 2023 draft when 3 others were picked before him and there is so little data to suggest he's leaped anyone?

IMO ASP has a game similar to Makar. He’s getting stronger which makes him even more dynamic.
You really think he skates like Makar?

You could have the opinion that he’s the best defenseman before the draft and after the draft regardless of where he was drafted. All we know is that 3 of the 32 teams had a higher opinion of another defenseman.

Yes sure. Then say it if so and prepare to be challenged why that after a few months he would be considered to be so when scouts thought otherwise.

Well, that and maybe every team that didn't draft a defenseman before ASP as well as the ones that never had a chance. So potentially every one but DET.

Well, he was ranked as the 2nd d-man of the draft by Mackenzie and many others. While I wouldn't say he's "leaped" past Reinbacher, the data we have so far supports the idea that Willander and Simashev were reaches based on size.

Simashev yes, Wilander no

I'm not trying to discredit the pick or player he has tremendous potential and is already showing he can elevate levels with ease given his start which is big. Hype over some stats and suggestions that he's risen over other higher selected players with a small sample is strange.

I mean if you already thought he was the best or had that likelihood that's cool he has massive Fox upside i get it . The reset and selections in this draft look good for Detroit.

It's tempting to think he will walk into the NHL and just carry on as a game changer. Reality is the NHL is incredibly difficult and he will be tested to defend which he has shown some weaknesses and thats against peers and AHL level players.

If i was a Red Wing fan i would be excited also to see him doing so well. Excited but cognizant that it's still lower levels with a bigger ice surface. He's 18 let it marinate and enjoy the ride he looks like a player

Some of us are watching the games.
But I hope you bring the same energy towards the posters calling Benson a total steal because he had a nice forecheck and a goal in practice games.
Let it go man.

My original point was related to it being suggested he was gonna be the best defenseman in the draft. 3 teams certainly don't think so and the rest we don't know about. For some reason that's tough to hear for ASP fans

Benson is a fine young talent.

And that’s what it comes down to. Vancouver couldn’t take him because they couldn’t play the next ten years with 3 smaller dmen, and Montreal needed size to keep up with what’s going on in Detroit and Buffalo. I thought Arizona was taking him but they chose the Russian, who was the most raw of the 4.

So there were reasons to draft the others but, ASP isn’t raw by any means, nor did he drop. If Detroit was drafting 9th and 10th, good chance they would’ve taken him anyway because of the size they already have in their system.

He was by far, the most well rounded dman in the draft. The kid already has 5-6 moves to relieve pressure and he retrieves as well as anyone.. he’s not just an offensive player. If he were 6’2”, he would’ve went 5th overall. I don’t think there’s much debate about that. Whether the size is an issue over the years, we’ll see. It was a factor in the draft though.

As long as his core strength continues to keep getting better, as it has over the last year, he’s going to be a really good player. What’s his ceiling? Letang is the most mentioned, but let’s wait and see. That’s a lot of pressure to put on a kid. He does have some high level skills for a dman, and I think the fun part watching him is, he keeps getting better, skill wise. He adds to his arsenal pretty consistently.

Long way to go before he’s making an impact in the NHL, but the sky really is the limit with him. He plays in space so we’ll, he should transition well to NA but we shall see. Still takes time.

He reminds me of Nils Lundkvist, who isn’t bad. NHL coaches have a size fetish, so you better be an amazing player or play for a team with a clear need for a smaller defenseman that can skate, move the puck, and contribute offense. Otherwise, you’ll probably struggle to keep a spot in an NHL lineup.

ASP can overcome this and be a good NHL defenseman, but it will be a challenge for him to get his foot in the door.

I see some similarities in the way they work the offensive blue line and stature too, but ASP is a noticeably better skater than Nils. That will be a big help in the Na transition

ASP is a significantly better and more dynamic skater, among other things.

Besides ASP just being a better player flat out, the bolded is exactly Detroit. 3/4 of our future top 4 is likely 6’6” Edvinsson, 6’3” Seider, and 6’4” Wallinder, but none of them are elite offensively. There’s room for ASP.

Think it’s why they actually drafted him without an ounce of concern. Don’t forget Tuomisto too. Another 6’5” player who’s looked very good this summer, and in camp. ASP is gonna have a lot of open ice with that group.

Those two picks in the 23’ draft couldn’t have looked any better right now for Detroit.
