No compensation is a bummer, which means if Bylsma gets a job there will be no compensation there also.

Oh well, maybe we'll make trades for picks, maybe we'll trade our remaining picks for a top 6 forward? Who knows.

Why wouldn't we get compensation for Bylsma?

Because we're not getting one for Shero so the Pens may not care about it.

There are some pretty big jumps in logic there that aren't nevessarily true. If what was said on the first page is true, the Pens decided to get out of the rest of Shero's contract (1 more year) instead of draft pick compensation. Bylsma doesn't have another year on his old deal, he signed a 2 year deal after the 2013 season. They couldn't opt out of him contract since his contract would be done, so it would either be nothing or a draft pick.

The way I'm reading it, Shero WAS under contract for next season so we CHOSE money over draft pick compensation. Bylsma wasn't under contract for next season, so we won't get compensated at all.

We need draft picks more than saving a few bucks, that's for damn sure.

He was hired by the Penguins in 2006...

Yeah, but the rebuild was practically done at that point. All he needed to do was change coaches and make a couple call ups to end up as a playoff club. He did do good work at the deadline in 07 and 08.

Anyways, I wouldn't worry about him and rebuilding. If Conte can find a) Americans and b) defensemen, he and Shero will get along swimmingly.

Yeah, and he inherited a team with Sid, Geno, a 2nd overall pick (which he didn't even take the fifth best player in that round), and Fleury.

He sure did turn things around.

Regardless of the young pieces he inherited, the Pens had a lot of issues that Shero addressed.

Retaining elite talent and surrounding them with the right complementary players is a lot easier said than done.

In division, Devils will continue to beat us. Not a good hire for a team that wants to get good prospects and rebuild.

Pretty much.

What would we do with a draft pick anyway? Trade him to New Jersey for Dainius Zubrus.

:)

Zubrus has too much size to play for the Pens. Don't the Devils have a bottom six grinder in the 5'11 to 6'1 range, who is 35+ years old? That's the guy they'd target.

You guys can have Adam Oates as a new coach, assistant, zamboni rider...etc if you need compensation.

Also, how much different will Shero be?

The Devils have been horribly mismanaged over the last 7 years or so and I think that's not going to change much with Shero.

Regardless of the young pieces he inherited, the Pens had a lot of issues that Shero addressed.

Two generational talents, a franchise goalie, and a #2 overall pick are not just "young pieces he inherited." That's a guy getting the easiest job in the world handed to him on a silver platter.

Retaining elite talent and surrounding them with the right complementary players is a lot easier said than done.

How many teams/GMs would you expect to **** up on re-signing Sid, Geno, etc? Teams haven't been letting their core, foundation players reach free agency for years. The last guys to hit the open market were Parise and Suter three years ago, and before that... Hossa? I don't even know.

It's time to stop giving Shero credit. He drove this team off of a cliff and left a flaming pile of wreckage in his wake on the way out.

Several guys around here could have had this team in a better position than Shero left us in. I don't even mean that as a joke.

Bummer. Why?

When was the last time a team actually gave compensation in this league?

We're not going to get anything for Bylsma, either. It's one of those unwritten rules, akin to RFA contracts. It's in the books that you can do it, but you're putting yourself on the **** list of a ton of teams by doing so.

At the end of the day, it's a business, and the Pens lost plenty of money with people cancelling their season tickets, not buying playoff tickets and only having 2 home playoff games.

I think this is a great fit. If we had David Conte instead of the clowns that we do, somehow I don't think Ken Agostino is a name I would ever have heard, even if Shero did give marching orders to obsess over US kids.

Was hoping that Ray would become the Bruins' GM; oh well. He's still a better GM than Rutherford. If Shero turns into his pre-2012 self; this is a good move. But, that doesn't seem likely.

I guess the Bruins don't care about that then since they're pursuing one from Edmonton.

I never heard of this before this year so I thought it was something new when I read that we can get picks for Shero/Bylsma and Boston is wanting one from Edmonton.

If this is correct, Carolina could have asked us for a pick for Rutherford but decided not to so the Pens just let Shero and pocketed $3.5M

Yeah, getting that money off the books is compensation of its own. $3.5 million is akin to another round of playoff revenue.

I have no knowledge of the Chia/Boston situation, so I won't comment on it.
