Teams in a playoff battle do not call up some rookie and play him 20 minutes a night just for fun.

Boston called up McAvoy for the playoffs and played him more than 26 minutes a game.
Colorado is on pace to easily make the playoffs because they put their trust in Makar.
Vancouver is on pace to easily make the playoffs because they put their trust in Hughes.
Dallas after missing the playoffs two years in a row, made it last year and should make it this year because they put their trust in Heiskanen.
No one is asking Toronto to do that. But if you think that the way into the playoffs is to play worse D more than better D then this team deserves to miss the playoffs.

ok now thats enough of that not making the playoffs stuff ;)

Sandin is good and should play lots as he goes along here. Liljegren is good and should play lots as we go along here! Oh yeah Ceci takes his minutes. I’ll say this little tidbit on Ceci in fairness, i would rather have him than Marincin. Would rather have Liljegren getting reps right now over both.

I am not arguing at all. All I said to label any of our young defense including Sandin, Lily and Dermy to any kind of potential level pairing ranking is extremely short sighted. Lily could be our best. Dermy our 2nd best. and Sandin may fall off the face of the earth. or any combination thereof. Personally I love all 3. But maybe it is being older and playing and seeing things develop over the years there are no sure things on defense. Even sure things with loads of skill miss --- Morin, McBean, Reinhart, Murray, Hickey etc etc. It is a bit of a crap shoot. We would be extremely lucky if 1 of these 3 guys turns into a true #1.

The world could end tomorrow. Auston Matthews could be transformed into a newt. There is certainty (justified or not), there are positions based on strong evidence, and there is simply saying anything could happen and we can't know anything. I could say back in March that Sandin was going to make the team out of camp this fall and Liljegren was not going to ready because it was based on strong evidence. The chances of Dermott turning into a true #1 are extremely close to zero. The chances of Liljegren turning into a true #1 are not much higher than that. For Sandin the chances are a good deal higher, but still not great.

Vancouver and Colorado had lost zero games and were tied for first overall when they tried out the rookies. You wrong they are not risking his development and their season so some fan boy can sit in the forums and pump tires all day

Chances are, to some degree, you may or may not be correct. :dunno:

This kid is amazing. I'd remove any of our defensemen to keep this guy in the line up even if hes not ready defensively. Putting him back in the marlies is going to hinder his development. I think this kid can teach Rielly and Dermott some things.

Little early to be drinking, bud.

Risking the season would be playing Dermott and Marincin in critical minutes instead of someone who actually knows what to do with them.

No one is saying play Sandin in Muzzin's minutes, but he's easily our 2nd best LHD option right now and should be playing 2nd pairing minutes.

How about you go back to the Sens board and blindly defending that tax cheat Melnyk. And, we'll discuss Leafs prospects among ourselves. Unless you want us to go over there en-mass and make our opinions about the Senators known.

Chances are highly likely that I am correct.

In case you are in-correct, use this:

For dmen kids this is completely speculative... it is entirely feasible that Dermy gets it at some point in next 2-3 years and becomes the best defense in the NHL ... you never ever give up on a kid with the skill sets that Dermy has ... he has more raw skill then either Sandin or Lily today. But it takes so much more to become a #1 vet dman. and experience is critical. You can't compare with forwards who you can get a much clearer picture much earlier on in their pro careers.

Your one of my favourite posters here and I agree with your stance dermott will never be a #1/2 but I also knew that the first couple times I saw him play years ago. He will be a 4 in the future imo which is pretty solid.

I agree playing sandin more as well but not 25 minutes etc a night just 3/4 usage with some pp.

I think that Babcock has slowed down Dermott's development by sheltering him too much on the third-pairing. Hopefully, Keefe, who had so much success with Dermott on the Marlies, can get him the next step.

Yes - that is what they should be aiming this year. I am looking for 18 minutes a night. Higher on games where the team is behind. I am looking for them to start giving him some shifts on the right side. See what they have in him.

You're right - Makar made his DEBUT in the playoffs last year. Most pressure packed situation possible. Sandin isn't Makar, but game 50 of the regular season also isn't game 1 of the playoffs.

And he played 14 minutes in game 1, he averaged 17 mins in the playoffs.

Well it’s a public board so feel free. If you have information on Melnyk with real numbers and new info a new thread will be welcome.
I’m not sure how explaining the logic of how the NHL works and why things are done is a problem. Most rookies do not play more than 15 mins a night for the first bit, and there is a lot of pressure in Toronto with a lot on the line. Those are facts

I just laugh at the non Leafs fans on the main board who see nothing wrong with the hit from behind on Sandin by Comeau, because some didn't even think it's a dirty hit and it was the correct call not giving him at least 2:00 for boarding.

It wasn't an excuse. It was a factual statement at the time.

No, you can head back to your posts if you want. It was an excuse. I said he shouldn't be getting under 14 minutes a game. You chastised that (factual) statement by saying that was due to Babcock and now with Keefe things had changed. Well they haven't. You also said that if he plays well he'll get an opportunity, except as a reward for being the best player in the game on Monday he got to sit on the bench the next game.

The whole point of the development plan expressed by Dubas a couple years ago was the idea of the seamless transition. You play the same systems on the Marlies and the Leafs and you ensure prospects are ready when they are brought up so that when they are brought up they are not only ready to stay up but also ready to move seamlessly into the open role. There is no role on the Leafs defense which plays under 2 minutes in the final 25 minutes of the game. This isn't a third pairing role - its a quasi third pairing role. A player is either ready or they not. If they are ready then they should be used appropriately. If they are not then they shouldn't be used. This would have been the equivalent of bringing Nylander up in the spring of 2016, but playing him 7 minutes a game on the fourth line. This in between shit is bad development, a complete waste, and teams that consistently develop really good D don't do this.
