Biggest game of his career and he choked. Not unsurprising I guess given his age but Christ what an awful time to choose to start playing terribly.
I dont blame Sandin.

He got that nice PP goal and everyone was happy again, but Keefe should have left Dermott in knowing the whistles would be put away in a Habs elimination game.

This guy is still going to be a stud for us.

But playoffs aren't a time to learn.

Will be interesting to see if he gets in again after tonight.

There's no chance he gets in again unless there's an injury or worse play somehow by Dermott in a future game.

Absolutely brutal game from the kid and was rightfully sat down after the second giveaway and goal. Campbell didn't really do him any favours either to be honest, both were borderline soft goals let in. But that's just how it goes sometimes and bottom line is he can't make either giveaway in such high risk spots. Hopefully doesn't shake his confidence permanently.

This guy will play better when he's given some rope I've seen this time and time again with these sort of players. He needs to be allowed to jump in offensively for him to be effective. He's gonna give up some bad goals but you know what, so does Rielly and Rielly doesn't contribute offensively much anymore either. He'll be a net positive but he's gotta be allowed to make plays in the offensive zone.

He’s got huge upside, and when he’s playing well, he contributes very positively. But he’s also a young kid, recently turned 21 and only has ~40 games of NHL experience. He makes rookie mistakes, and those are very costly in the playoffs. In our 2 losses this series, 4 of the 6 goals we’ve allowed have been largely Sandin’s fault.

I do think we should play Dermott instead. Dermott is faster, stronger, better defensively, much more experienced, and well past making rookie mistakes. Doesn’t have Sandin’s offensive talent/smarts, but he’s a very good bottom pairing dman, and a better choice for this year’s playoffs IMO.

Sandin will get a full NHL season in next year, and be ready for next year’s playoffs, but playing him over Dermott right now is the wrong move. If Dermott was playing from the start, I think we’d have already won this series, maybe even swept, as Sandin’s mistakes were a huge part of both losses.

I think Keefe had a rude awakening tonight...that's why he benched him after the 3rd goal...there's very little reason to play Sandin over Dermott...I think Dermott played 51 of the 56 games this season...it's really not the time to experiment right now...unless there's an injury on defense, Sandin shouldn't be playing...he doesn't make the Leafs defense better, and his mistakes have proven very costly.

Sandin makes the PP better. That's about it.

Not enough reason alone to keep him in the lineup when he's gifting the other team.

I think that was his sole purpose as a #6. Jump start the PP, which to his credit he did.

Unfortunately with him right now we're beating ourselves, but the kid is gonna be a good one soon.

I love Sandin but he was horrendous in that game and directly led to multiple goals. I can forgive for the first one, due to a high hit from Perry, but goal 3 was atrocious. Time to bring Dermott back in.

Happy they gave him a chance but he's clearly not ready.

I'm the furthest thing from a Dermott fan but if Bogo is his partner, I'm good with him in the lineup.

I don't know if this is actually true. Wasn't on ice for a single power play goal for in the regular season, ended his 10 game stretch -1 at 5 on 4, has scored one and gave another up in the playoffs, and as per Natural Stat trick is 8th on the team 5v4 xGF, well behind all the other players who have seen first unit time. I don't think any of this is his fault - I think there's something completely broken about the entire structure, and switching up which defenseman plays PP1 hasn't made any lasting difference. Perhaps he's the right guy to play within a revamped system if they ever come up with one, but I don't see any evidence that he's rescuing the one they have.

What I do see is that he's absolutely killed it on the bottom pair at even strength with Dermott. They haven't tried that pair at all in the playoffs and it's understandable that they won't on Saturday. But that's where he's excelled the most, probably owing to a faster partner.

Playoff goals against - 8
GA w/ Sandin on ice - 4
Total Playoff minutes - 300:59
Sandin total minutes - 47:57 (13:44 on PP)

Half of the goals we've given up have come with him on the ice despite playing less than 1/6th of the minutes. Sometimes that's just the way it goes and you get scored on even though you did everything right, but for all 4 of those goals he was somewhere between partially to blame and completely to blame.

This, made absolutely zero sense. Would I go so far as to say Keefe should be fired if they lose this series? I dunno, but he definitely should be on thin ice if that tragedy were to happen

I don't even blame him for the first goal. He passed the puck to Thornton and Thornton bobbled it. Sure it was in his feet, but come on, if I can take a pass in my skates I should hope an NHL player can too.

I would not consider the first goal a give away. He was crushed on the boards (guy left his feet) and still got the puck to Thornton albeit in tight. Guys get rubbed out. The second yeah a bad give away
