Two bad games -- Games 1 and 5. Both losses. He was beat on three key goals.

He's still a budding star.

Time to reset and cary on from here.

I like the kid but he is a bit too confident for my liking. He seems to think he can deke his way out of anything instead of realizing he is in a tight spot and the right play is to just get it out of the zone. He is like a rookie QB who extends a play when nothing is available to the point where he throws an INT instead of just tossing it into the stands to fight another day. He will learn...but the playoffs are not the place to learn on the job IMO. He needs to work on his skating which is frighteningly slow for a guy 21yrs old. This league is getting faster every year...he needs to work on his feet more than anything.

Rasmus Sandin has looked pretty good to start the year. With more and more games under his belt we’ll see him develop into a really good defenceman.

Look at that quiet efficient game Liljegren had last night. I'd like to see more of that from Sandin. Sandin will be a better defender when his game becomes more boring, less of a riverboat gambler. It's amazing how much Sandin's tendencies to push forward are being enabled. To go way back it reminds me of Dmitri Yushkevich in Philadelphia where as a young NHL defender he fancied himself as an offensive defenseman and looked in over his head at times. Presumably the coaching staff are encouraging this while discouraging it from Liljegren.

They started with the red light and brakes with Liljegren, telling him that preventing goals is his job. So they put a leash on him his first season. Part way through season 2, they slowly started taking off the leash. By year 3, he was a complete 2 way D-man pushing for NHL minutes.

With Sandin it is looking a bit like they missed the boat on the defensive development, and it appears he will have to learn to play D at the NHL level.

His defense is fine .. his only issue is his lack of NHL foot speed .. and quite frankly there is zero chance he is gonna correct it during da season .. it will have to be a change in stride mechanics next summer and working with barb here in TO

I think Barb left. Also think most players don't improve their speed too much by this level. Otherwise everyone should be speedy by now. It's not like the Leafs wouldn't have known about his slow skating

Oh that's sad she was so good to one of my guys .. haven't been around a rink in 2 years now

barb brought in randi milani to learn the ropes ... she has replaced barb full time with the leafs ... barb said she will maintain a few select clients part time but wants to spend time with her new grandchildren ......
Is Elkin still with team? Does he still run his company out of Iceland?

He is so good. Our 2nd best defensman behind TJ Brodie and will be our best within a few years.

Ramblings: Kaliyev's Career Start; Kuznetov's Superlative Season; Sandin's Impact - November 26

I saw someone tweeting about how good Rasmus Sandin's season has been and decided to look for myself. Uh, yeah, he's been great:
  • By Evolving Hockey's expected goals against impact, the highest of any player in hockey, meaning elite defensive impacts
  • By HockeyViz's offensive and defensive impacts, he has +49% and -20% respectively. That means the team is generating 49% more expected goals with him on the ice compared to the league average and allowing 20% less defensively.
  • Leads all Toronto defencemen in assist rate at 5-on-5
  • Leads all Toronto defencemen in individual scoring chance rate, despite being third in shot rates. He doesn't waste shots, he's picking his spots with precision.
Put it all together, and… dear god:

love the evolution of this kid in getting some consistent playing time and especially love the crow so many ridiculous posters will have to now eat after having repeatedly written both him and Lilly off.

I have doubts that at 21 he can get significantly faster.. it's too bad because his speed holds him back from absolute star potential.

My guess is he will need to be mindful of positioning so he doesn't get caught in footraces as he seems to all too often. He's pretty great at reading plays just needs to dial back the pinches and risk taking. He will be an excellent player for a long time to come.

I mean a lot of skating power comes from having good core strength and strong legs, both of which can be developed as a player matures. It's not like Sandy is fully physically mature and it's not like he is extremely slow, to begin with. He's a very efficient skater who doesn't waste a ton of energy with his skating. He doesn't have that constant motor that keeps him on the move similar to some of the other top-end skaters/Dmen in the league. I feel like most swedes are brought up this way to be very efficient with their movements and positionally sound. Sandin isn't the type of player you want jumping into plays or rushing the puck up the ice a ton and even with the speed he possesses, he is smart enough to always be in the right spot when opportunities present themselves, like the Bunting goal vs Kings where Sandy came down low for Auston's pass. There aren't a ton of D brave enough or smart enough to read that play and come down low like that.

Sandin past the half line looks like a #2 defensemen, very poised with the puck. Has amazing offensive IQ, has a good shot, solid passer. He’s very good on the rush too

Sandin before the half line looks like a rookie #5-6 defensemen, if the puck is dumped into the corner and chased after, he’s likely to lose it. Needs to be stronger on the boards. This is where i find Liljegren to be better than him, when the pucks on the boards, Liljegren can usually keep it there or transition it to another guy better than Sandin. This part of his game is going to get better as he plays I think.
If he got his foot speed up I see a top pairing guy for his ceiling
I’m really impressed by Sandin this season. He’s taking strides in the right direction
