I wonder how Fletcher feels about it. He must know how much Ristolainen is under the microscope right now. Tortorella basically calling him useless doesn't make signing him look any better lol
Fletcher probably hopes Ristolainen responds well to Torts' challenge.

It's basically his and our only hope.
Torts' m.o. is to challenge people. I think it will be good for Risto.

But I'm also not in the camp who believes Risto is untradeable. There was demand for him when the Flyers traded for him. There would have been suitors at the trade deadline. And I don't think his value suddenly evaporated in 4 games this season.

Fletcher's MO is minimizing value until every move is a loss. He will hold Risto until we have to pay to get rid of him. Risto's value was based on the wrong idea that he would be good out of Buffalo. Considering how dino execs salivate at the cult of Tortorella's defense, if Tortorella can't fix him (and he definitely can't, nobody can), then the myth his value was based on dies. And all that's left is a bad contract for a cash strapped team with a toilet paper GM to get rid of.

There probably was demand for him before we gave him that contract. Now I can't see another GM trading for 4 years of him. Other teams probably want to see what they have before committing long term.

There was "demand" when he was an expiring contract. It’s insanely hard to trade a contract with term and a relatively high aav in this cap strapped era. Flyers have to add high picks and/or retain….none of which is probably happening unless fletcher trades the giroux pick he got which would be such a f***ing failure of a trade (both the giroux and the risto trade to get rid of him)

The cap is finally going to start increasing this summer and beyond. Risto's cap hit is less than his previous contract. Any team who wanted to trade for him Summer of 2021 was going to be interested in extending him. His contract won't be an issue to any team who was interested before.

The cap isn’t going to increase that much next year for someone to take on his contract. Doubt risto leaves unless it’s 2-3 years from now. Either way, any trade involving him is going to involve us taking on cap too from another player. Whether or not fletcher wins that trade remains to be seen, hopefully he can pull a rabbit out of a hat.

Hell
You gonna walk away from a million a year (or whatever he's getting paid)?
You got rich parents or something?
He does and he has had plenty of prior money to invest properly. Don't think he's going to cry poor...

Me I'd be getting another job and leaving that job. And yes I have dropped a resignation letter on a bad boss when he was about to get me fired and told him it'll be done my way or I'm out. A coworker heard what I did from a person outside our department and walked into his office with their letter an hour later. His way would have had the whole department fired.

There are 32 GM jobs, doubt Fletcher will ever sniff one again, nor will he get a media job.
So this is pretty much it for him.

So it wasn't Fletcher insisting on the move and the extension?

Sounds more like a bunch of dino advisors pushing for "more size, more hits" - the problem with consensus decision making and keeping people in the loop - what if they're the wrong people?

What will get interesting is if Torts decides Risto is a lost cause, he had nothing to do with the trade or the extension, so he has no CYA issues. With any luck, it may result in some senior advisors getting their phone calls blocked.
It comes down to identifying how to classify Fletcher's incompetence as a GM: actively making bad personnel decisions himself or not rejecting the bad personnel decisions of the people around him. Either way, he should be fired. The problem that I am certain most of us are concerned with is how to bring in a GM who will make good personnel decisions and accept the good recommendations of the 'advisors'. It seems like a rigged system against the much needed breath of fresh air.

He will absolutely get another front office job. But if you believe this is his last desperate go, is it good to endlessly defend the honor of a GM who you say is on his last legs in this league?

@Beef Invictus — did I do well? Did I make you proud?

Watching the Ristolainen highlights PSA brought up a similar video of him with the Sabres.

The frustrating thing is that he has offensive skills but it seemingly has been buried deeply beneath terrible overall defensive play and the emphasis on BIG HITZ. One would have to deconstruct the current Ristolainen and let him go offense first. I'm almost tempted to say that the team that tried to hammer the square peg of Morin into the round hole of power forward might actually get more value doing this with Ristolainen than letting him get turnstiled on the back end.

That’s the thing about a Cuck.. they’re actually fairly popular in the personal and professional spheres. For obvious reasons.

My concern from the outset with Risto was that they were going to try to use him as a defensive defenseman when his game is actually offense.
