A signed Rantanen could get someone like Byfield from LA.
Ummm he's risking leaving money on the table thinking the market is going to make up the 15% in your said example
we';ve seen it before and it backfired immensely
kings would just wait till july 1st.... taking away byfield and adding does not make the kings contenders.A signed Rantanen could get someone like Byfield from LA.
Well he hasn’t been spectacular away from a top 3 player in the leagueThere's risk either way and no guarantees. Regardless of what he's done in Carolina, he's a Cup winning multiple time 100 point scorer with a 50+ goal season on his resume. It's a lot more likely that he's going to get a stupid offer from a desperate GM in UFA, than it is that he'll get the best deal from the only team he can sign with.
Signing in UFA also doesn't deplete his new team of assets that could help them win.
That about sums it up.Why would a team pay a significant price now to get him for 8 years, if they can get him to sign for 7 years without any asset cost in 4 months?
Well he hasn’t been spectacular away from a top 3 player in the league
So yea there is more risk to attempt to make up the difference in Free agency of that 8th year
It's been 12 games. I'm assuming most GMs understand how sample sizes work, and there will be more than a few willing to take a chance on a 100 point scoring Cup winner.
Leafs offer:
Knies
Cowan
Jarnkrok
2026 1st (lottery protected)
For
Rantanen (extended)
And I’m assuming GM’s have seen how he has played away from said player and could be weary to make up the $12+million difference
Pretty simple to grasp
Rantanen enough to save the Canucks season? They seem like a hot mess and should be sellers vs sneaking in and getting spanked by Winnipeg.Could a Brock Boeser for Rantanen deal work out.
Vancouver adds.
From Kings insider:I think my favorite destinations are Dallas and Los Angeles. I wonder if Carolina could try to pull Clarke and Greentree out of LA, and I feel like that could be done if LA really thought this core could win the Cup. They aren't really using Clarke in the lineup and well Greentree doesn't really fit in to their timeline considering Kopitar is only getting older and so is Danault. I really like Byfield but looking at past trades I doubt Carolina gets that. Dallas has Bourque and Stankoven who look like good options but I doubt they could get both of them out of Dallas, however, it is another case of does Dallas believe Rantanen improve their chances at winning the cup. It's hard to predict, but looking back at these type of trades is very underwhelming because I thought you could get much more. Tkachuk being an RFA must've done a lot of heavy lifting.
I predicted that if Carolina got to March 8th with Rantanen on the team...they'd ultimately be that team, along with a promise to do our best to ship him to his preferred destination if he decides he just doesn't want to be in Raleigh.Without having insights beyond vibes, it does seem like Rantanen was shocked by the trade and is gonna go UFA, he'd only have signed a deal in Colorado and they moved on. You'd need a team willing to give him an insane overpay to get him to sign, and willing to give up the assets to land him in a trade.
I think he's gonna be sold as a rental, if Carolina is serious about being unwilling to keep him unsigned.
It's not even about this season. A signed Rantanen for the future.Rantanen enough to save the Canucks season? They seem like a hot mess and should be sellers vs sneaking in and getting spanked by Winnipeg.
Ah yeah, sorry I was thinknig UFA for UFA and assuming he'd leave/try to sign him. A signed Rantanen. Wayyyyyy more than Boeser. It's not even about this season. A signed Rantanen for the future.
Hurricanes get a winger that can score and help during playoffs.

Ummmm that gets you to UFA quicker
that's not hardball
that basic negotiating
LOLOL
8 year contracts as an RFA are different than 8 year contracts as a UFA.His last deal was for 6 years in COL. Completely ignored the 8 and even 7 there. His agent obviously plays hardball.
Lots of votes for wait for July 1
Reframe the situation
Would a man who is pending a contract valued above 100 million dollars be super chill with going to war in the playoffs for a team he just got to, with no deal, potentially risking literally a hundred million dollars? Pretty sure he’d only do it if he had to and would have representatives fighting every second prior to avoid it.
What’s his next deal look like if he tears his acl in round one? Is it 50 million?
