There's risk either way and no guarantees. Regardless of what he's done in Carolina, he's a Cup winning multiple time 100 point scorer with a 50+ goal season on his resume. It's a lot more likely that he's going to get a stupid offer from a desperate GM in UFA, than it is that he'll get the best deal from the only team he can sign with.

Signing in UFA also doesn't deplete his new team of assets that could help them win.

I think my favorite destinations are Dallas and Los Angeles. I wonder if Carolina could try to pull Clarke and Greentree out of LA, and I feel like that could be done if LA really thought this core could win the Cup. They aren't really using Clarke in the lineup and well Greentree doesn't really fit in to their timeline considering Kopitar is only getting older and so is Danault. I really like Byfield but looking at past trades I doubt Carolina gets that. Dallas has Bourque and Stankoven who look like good options but I doubt they could get both of them out of Dallas, however, it is another case of does Dallas believe Rantanen improve their chances at winning the cup. It's hard to predict, but looking back at these type of trades is very underwhelming because I thought you could get much more. Tkachuk being an RFA must've done a lot of heavy lifting.

You'd need a team willing to give him an insane overpay to get him to sign, and willing to give up the assets to land him in a trade.

Would a man who is pending a contract valued above 100 million dollars be super chill with going to war in the playoffs for a team he just got to, with no deal, potentially risking literally a hundred million dollars? Pretty sure he’d only do it if he had to and would have representatives fighting every second prior to avoid it.

What’s his next deal look like if he tears his acl in round one? Is it 50 million?

Reality is, the team has no leverage when the player is months away from UFA. At best it's a rental price plus an extra pick/prospect. And no, Tkachuk isnt a comparable since he was an RFA

Ah yeah, sorry I was thinknig UFA for UFA and assuming he'd leave/try to sign him. A signed Rantanen. Wayyyyyy more than Boeser.

I guess assuming Rantanen is willing to sign an 8 year deal with the intention of being traded to Vancouver, I think it would have to be EP40 and Boeser to get it done, then the Canes gamble on re-signing Boeser.

His last deal was for 6 years in COL. Completely ignored the 8 and even 7 there. His agent obviously plays hardball.

8 year contracts as an RFA are different than 8 year contracts as a UFA.

Stars who take shorter term on RFA deals (Matthews, Makar, etc.) are doing so to get to UFA early and not get locked into a contract at old pricing. At UFA when you're older is when guys traditionally (not all) go for the longer deals because at that point their play will likely decline and you want to secure the biggest amount of total money possible. This way you mitigate losses against injury or decline in play.

Maybe this is what you were getting at but just wanted to clarify.

He could have a near 100M deal with colorado early this season and not risk that hypothetical acl tear. Its only a few months away, hes probably testing UFA or get a contract offer too rich to refuse.
