I hope I am wrong on this, but I think people are going to be super disappointed on here come noon tomorrow.

I think all of the leaks regarding "self rentals", and Robinson's tweet regarding the price not being good for Boeser (but that management wants to trade him!) are all designed to soften the market for when management only trades like Soucy or Forbot, if that, tomorrow.

The reality is, and I think this is relatively clear, that management and ownership are both aligned on their compete now plan. Ownership wants the playoff revenue, and most certainly, management wants another playoff birth as it means they are more likely to have a job for longer, and if fired, are more likely to get a new job. So the relevant parties are aligned with their short term focus.

Perfetti and Soucy both happen to make 3.25M ..
The Jets are going to trade their 23 year old forward, who was drafted 10th overall and is on pace to score about 50 points this year, for a bottom pairing defensemen that has been scratched multiple times this year?

There is zero chance that the Jets would even entertain that proposal. Its awful from their perpsective.

Hurricanes
  • Before acquiring Rantanen had three offers on the table; Miller, Pettersson, and Rantanen
  • Strong considering keeping Rantanen
  • Stars, Panthers, and Golden Knights are most active in trade talks; says not to sleep on the Kings
Blue Jackets
  • Won’t be involved in big name players
  • Won’t trade Ivan Provorov
  • Were deeply involved with Gustav Nyquist trade talks before he was sent to the Wild
  • Looking for a depth scorer; mentions Reilly Smith (since traded) and Kyle Palmieri
Canucks
  • Boeser’s market is tied to Rantanen
  • Prefer to move Boeser to the Eastern Conference or, at least, out of division but a greater return can mitigate that
  • Teams have checked in on Soucy; Suter likely to be moved; listening on Forbort
  • Are actively shopping; in the market for mid-20s players with team control; centre is priority but looking for a scoring wing
  • Hockey trades are hard to make at the deadline
Golden Knights
  • Don’t have the cap flexibility of other teams
  • If can’t get Rantanen then could pivot to Ryan Donato
Kings
  • Willing to listen to offers on Brandt Clarke
Oilers
  • Want to add another defenceman; has checked in on Connor Murphy
Blackhawks
  • Trying to trade Petr Mrazek
  • Want to maximize the return on Donato
  • All upcoming UFAs are available
Penguins
  • Anthony Beauvillier most likely to be moved
Sharks
  • Not much on the rental defence market and teams are looking at Mario Ferraro instead; won’t be cheap

Can’t be disappointed if your expectations are already low

That's definitely me. I don't think I have ever not been disappointed on trade deadline day. Like, Derek Roy is the best player I can recall us trading for on deadline day (excepting out Hronek as that was more of a futures deal than your typical deadline deal).

For me, it really depends on whether they actually re-sign their "own rentals" or not. If we do go in that direction, then it's whatever. I still think Suter is very useful if we're going to try remaining competitive next year. Boeser too, but I'm a bit concerned on his sticker price. Although, I'm not exactly thrilled to give Suter 3M either.

What would actually piss me off is them going this only to lose all of them in the off season for nothing. That absolutely cannot happen.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but I’m pretty bummed a contender that’s in the thick of it year in year out can’t sign a top tier player. Seems like they all just line up for Florida/Las Vegas or other sunny, low tax environments now. I don’t see how this is good for the NHL to be honest.

They're going for a cup who knows what they end up doing, but surely something.

No proposal was made, just a salary comparison that is in fact equal.

For sure, in terms of analyzing the outcome, I agree it matters whether they re-sign the players they don't trade. I just think posters on here are fundamentally not understanding what the motivations and goals are of ownership and management. And I am not defending those motivations and goals, and in fact, I strongly dislike them.

Allvin and JR aren't idiots, they undoubtedly understand its a seller's market, and undoubtedly they understand they can trade Boeser, Suter, Forbert and Soucy. But the prices you get for your rentals don't matter if you don't want to trade those rentals because you want to make the playoffs.

Contenders don't trade very good young players on decent contracts for rental type players at the deadline. It basically never happens so I don't know why you are suggesting the Jets might do this.

You strongly implied this was a possible trade, but sure, if you want to walk it back go ahead.

Not worried about tdl at all. Allvin isn't dim.

Some combination of Suter, soucy, Boeser should get a very decent return in the current climate.

Nah, Higgins and Lapierre was an excellent deadline.

The worst for me was the following year when they moved a productive Hodgson for Zack Kassian. That didn't turn out to be a disaster in the long run, but it definitely hurt their contention window short term as Hodgson was clearly the better player for the three seasons that followed.

Somehow Boeser thinks he's worth $8m x 8 on the open market and yet nobody is willing to pony up to trade for him when he's making $6.7m this season.

Always worth remembering that whatever comes out of Dhaliwal's mouth is from an agent with an agenda, and Dhaliwal has no problem with that quid pro quo side of it. I'm extremely skeptical that Boeser ever intended to sign a team friendly deal.

My bet is they're able to get a good price for Soucy so they're willing to let him go. He's already going to be in tough to hold onto a spot next year, especially if they keep Forbert around (which they should - if you can't beat him out for a #6 spot you're not ready).

Whatever they get in return I expect they'll flip at the actual draft. I don't think they'll deal Suter unless they are able to swing another deal for a center.

It appears that they are going to monetize whoever they can. I expect the prognosis on Hughes is not looking great.
