Lazy is 100% applicable to Rants. If the dude had the work ethic of MacK, he'd probably lead the league in points yearly. Even being lazy he's an elite player, albeit a one dimensional one.

Poor man's Jagr. Early in Jagr's career he had some of these exact same labels place on him. Jagr was better, but the same sort of criticism was out there.

I mean I Mack is also relatively one dimensional. But no one hates on him nearly as much Mikko. I’m guessing because his style makes him look like he’s trying harder.

Which that’s not meant to be a dig at Mack at all. But if your dimension is putting up 100+ points chances are your mainly contributing offensively which is more than fine.

That’s why I think a great 2 way forward works best with 29 and 96. We know pre-injury, Lando with them was basically a three headed monster, then after Lando has his surgery, Nuke slotted in very nicely.

Yeah I've compared his game to Jagr's for a while now. Very similar players, if not comparable in terms of talent, they are in style, in both good and bad ways.

One thing to note just for fun though, Mikko has a very good one-timer, Jagr claims he didn't really even know how to do one until he went to Washington and watched Peter Bondra do it.

Personally I love the player despite his stretches that can leave fans extremely frustrated. He's still an elite talent without the motor.

One theory that I have about Mikko's "laziness" is he saves energy because he knows he has to play a shitload of minutes.

Rants is a very big guy and not as lean as Mack, big players like him that play tons of minutes don't play with the same energy as smaller guys.

Makar is on the small side, Mack is a freak...and Mikko is a 6'5 "normal" guy that plays as much as them.

Sparking up all those lung darts doesn't help much either.

He’s also not an efficient skater at all. Decent skater for his size for sure but the way he moves isn’t ideal for 24 minutes a night that’s for sure.

So the more the time passes, the more likely it is that he's going to do the same as Landy and Nuke: wait until he gets the best offer on the open market and then divide that number by 8 years instead of 7.

Trade him, committing to him is going to be the end of this core as cup contenders
Trade this f***er. The team signing this guy to a 7-8 year deal is going to regret it.
Trade him for peanuts while we are trying to win a cup here? Lol.

You better realize that if you don't want to re-sign Mikko (and you can make a case for that sure), he is going to walk to UFA. There will not be a trade. Firstly, the value is going to suck, secondly it would mean giving up on the season and that's not going to happen unless MacKinnon and/or Makar face a season ending injury.

A trade was the way to go imo and it should have been done at the draft for max value. You most likely are not getting a similar package at this point.
You are not going to get ANY value out of him on a trade at this point. If you retain 50%, you will get a late 1st and a B prospect.

This would be the biggest player traded for a cup run in ages. The return would be pretty solid, but still a better package would have been available at the draft.

The package is never big for a rental, no matter how good he is.
I know, but when was the last time a rental of this quality was traded?

It's also entirely possible that it could be a trade with an extension in place as well. That being said, I do expect the Avs to re-sign Rantanen.

Duchene was pretty good when Ottawa traded him to Columbus. Not Rantanen level, but +PPG forward. Ottawa got a first and two prospects who have not played in the NHL since.

And no, Rantanen will not be traded with an extension in place. What contending team can afford him? If Rantanen is going some place else, it will be for a worse team. And those teams might as well just wait until July when they can sign him for free.

If you can convince Marner or Petterson to waive their NMCs, I guess Toronto and Vancouver could be interested in trading for and signing Rantanen. What good that would do for the Avs though, I don't know.

Think of the Timo Meier trade. Add a little more to that. That's what we'd get and none of that helps this team win a cup this season.

We aren't winning the cup this season

All they have to do is limp into the playoffs healthy.

But whoever plays all year can't be burnt out by the time we get there.

If they can make it to the dance, and be healthy, and add the right lower half of the roster pieces, and the roster can be managed correctly, it's a cup contending team IMO.

I get that is a lot of IF lol. I'd go as far as to say even without Landeskog.

They need a goalie

Definitely, but how good of a goalie could be argued. I hope they don't rely on Annunen to be the starter going into the playoffs even if he ends up there most of the year.

Right now it's looking like Goalie, bottom six C, and a then defence are the issues. It's a tall order to fix all of that, but it is pieces that are possible to fix by the TDL.

If top six wing ends up on that list, and we don't get lucky somewhere else. Yeah we're not doing shit this year. The assets are not there to fix that many issues even if you ship out every future asset.

That's also a lot of very bad luck as well though. If they don't need a wing and a center, I can see the goalie issue being fixed and the defense being strengthened enough.
