2016 version's means nothing, meaningless cash grab that only people in Toronto would pay for.

If this is to be taken seriously. Next 2 tournaments at least are held in Europe.

If next tournament is held in north america, it's official, a meaningless tournament will go from being pointless to being the laugh of the sporting world even more then it already is.

I would love to see the nhl go to europe and charge prices as they do to watch Hockey. Even Olympic Hockey is cheaper then nhl regular season Hockey.

1. Canada
2. Finland
3. Russia
4. Sweden
5. NA U23
6. USA
7. Czech Republic
8. Euro all-stars

Eeeekkkk!!!!

Not sure if this is good or bad.

It's Beijing. So, I guess we can assume that the NHL is in for the next 2 Olympics.

I'm just hoping that the World Cup reverts back to a true international tournament in 2020....that's if it even survives beyond this current gimmick they've concocted.

1. Canada(Unbeatable)
2. Sweden(Team with no weaks)
3. USA(beeing better and better)
4. Finland(very consistent whatever team they have)
5. Russia(Yes they have problems on "big to big" tournaments)
6. Czech Republic(the development is to regress)
7. Team Europe(Very good team but not motivated enough for this big tournament)
8. North America U23 (Very talented team but very inexperienced)

Yes of course the czechs has a potenial! But the last two "big to big" tournaments wasn t very well(Vancouver 10 and Sochi 14).
In Sochi was the performance very disapionted!

What motivates players to participate in this tournament? Do they got money? Is it enough to risk an injury for such a joke tournament?

Wouldn't surprise me if there are quite a few high profile players who simply say no.

Delete u23 and european collection team and it's different story. NT tournaments aren't meaningless, NHL staff just does not understand the concept of national sports at all and why it sells.

If Europe would support this tournament, I'm sure it would go there but there is no point in sending it there if they can't find venues and a market to make money right?

True enough but in Canada it's a good thing that we aren't overly nationalistic.

As for the tournament, alot of people are calling it gimmicky but it's refreshing to try something new nd the NA U23 all stars will be a very exciting group and could surprise IMO.

That being said if Eichel and McDavid play for Canada and the USA then it will be dead last.

Here are my ranking if all U23 guys can stay with their U23 teams

1. Canada
2. Sweden
3. NA 23
4. USA
5. Russia
6. Czech Rep.
7. Finland
8. Europe

Canada is the only country that will blindly support a hockey tournament. If the NHL wants Europeans to support this tournament in terms of viewership, they will need to send it to Europe. Of course revenues will be much lower than if it is held in Toronto/Montreal/Vancouver, but that is reality. That would also provide a nice situation where the tournament would alternate ice size as well, and thus be more equitable for those involved. The tournament should alternate between being held in North America and Europe unless some other area shows significant improvement in realistic hockey potential.

My guess is that they may not have a choice, since this isn't a real international tournament but an event to generate more revenue in NA by the NHL, their employer. They could potentially be obligated by the NHL to participate if requested, unless they've got a legit injury.

:amazed: Wut? Is the NHL going to force players to participate? How can that be OK with the CBA?

Players were able to sit out of the Canada/World Cups in the past if they desired.

All tournaments are meaningless, it's a group of grown men chasing a rubber slab. The value in the tournament is the enjoyment all the users get. Sure, this tournament proves nothing, but I still want to watch Crosby in a team Canada jersey.

It's an NHL event that they're trying to push as a serious replacement for the Olympics. Makes sense that the players would either be obligated or at least pressured to go, especially Team Euro Leftovers players. I could see a lot of "injuries" suddenly hitting them if there was an easy way out. The rosters need to be named rather early on (next spring) and I presume that after that you can take a player out only if there's a legit injury (which would be similar to the Olympics).

1. Canada - Obvious.

2. Sweden - Just a very solid roster all across the board, and the defense in particular is developing into a very powerful unit.

3. USA - Definitely on the upswing. Center went from an area of concern to looking really solid almost overnight. Everything else looks good; they should definitely be contenders.

4. Russia - Yeah, they underperform on the big stage, but you can't drop them down further than this with that talented of a roster.

5. Finland - They look to be in a transitional stage with their stars from past tournaments being too old, and the next guard still being a bit too green; goaltending will probably see them perform better than this spot though.

6. Czech Republic - Really nice and balanced forward group, but they have some big question marks on D and in net.

7. U23 North America - Very talented team, and at least they may have a "chip on their shoulder" mentality, but I could see the goalies getting torn apart in a tournament like this, especially considering the lack of proven defensive talent on the roster.

8. Europe - Just the whole concept is an abomination. I'm not one to really read too much into the "will to win" stuff, but a crazy concoction of a bunch of rival countries' players playing together in September? Ugh. The roster doesn't look that bad, and they can use some players from different countries but the same NHL teams to their advantage, but as a group it is still sort of underwhelming. The goalies are the only reason I'd toy with moving them ahead of the U23 North America team.

So who pays players insurance? I believe in the Olympics it's the IOC, wasn't there a big brouhaha when Tavares got injured but the IOC paid up. Do the owners pay this time? Not that I would advocate it, but it would be kind of ironic if say Crosby and MacDavid got injured and were out for part of the season. I'm sure the NHL front office would be delighted not to mention Edmonton and Pittsburgh :D Players just starting to rev up for the coming season while not in game condition playing real games just seems a recipe for disaster and injuries.

I hate this format. One mixed team, and one team full of youngsters. Hopefully most of the players boycott this tournament.
