Trade Nash/Grabner/Holden/even DD by the TDL.

If McDonagh or Zucc are to be traded, I think doing it at the draft is more likely.

But hey...you never know.

Man, we are betting the house in Shestyorkin being Hank 2.0 .

Hope it doesn't blow up in our faces.

He doesn’t have to be Hank 2.0 to win the cup. He has to be a solid goaltender, which he has already proven at a legit high level. How he performs in the NHL has yet to be seen, but we will know soon.

You make a very good point. How many people on HF boards would have traded Amonte for Noonan and Matteau? Weight for Tik? Even Gartner for anything other than futures? I can honestly say that I don't know if I would have had I been in Smith's shoes.

It was a different time and a different environment. The pressure of the 54 year drought was immense, not to mention the failures of 92 were still fairly fresh wounds. The thinking is that vets would get the Rangers over the hump and luckily it worked.

You don't need an elite goaltender to win the Cup. They need to be good, of course, but they don't need to be elite.

Having good to elite skaters is more important.

The same reason the Rangers would trade their youngish captain and 2 first round picks for MSL. They think they can improve their team and don’t think they can resign the player.

Also. It would not be looked at as “1+ year of McDonagh.” It would be looked at as 2 playoff runs. Same as the MSL and Yandle trades. That might be one more playoff run than they’d have Trouba for if they can’t resign him.
But we don't know if they think they can't sign Trouba at this point in time. So the two situations do not mirror themselves. The Rangers were either going to sign Callahan or lose him for nothing after the season. The Jets don't have to worry about that. They can keep Trouba for this run and then move him during the offseason for someone who can help them long term. The 1+ year thing was including the idea they would have 2 potential runs with McDonagh also.

So, what do we do with Lundqvist? He isn't going to be happy to play on a rebuild team to end his career.

Retain some salary and trade him to a team with poor goaltending?

He would instantly make a team like the Islanders a contender, I know, it's blasphemy.

I have a better chance starting in goal for the Rangers next season than this ever becoming reality.

Let’s all get it through our collective heads. Henrik Lundqvist is going no where, and will retire a Ranger. He’s never leaving New York.

Except that Callahan was a good player and MSL was coming off winning the Art Ross. Much larger difference between the two.

What if he wants to be appreciated and win a cup?
Then you do the inevitable. I don’t see that happening though. Nor do I see us being a bottom feeder, even after shaking up this roster by recycling vets for futures.

There’s still talent here. Talent that other rebuilding teams ultimately didn’t have.

Situations don’t have to be identical for the same reasoning to be used.

I’m not questioning the trades or the thinking behind them. I’m only saying that in Smith’s place, I bet many of us posters wouldn’t have made those deals.

I think, in hindsight - and that’s all we have, the team would have had a run from 94-2000 similar to the run we just had if they didn’t make those deals. Very very good but not good enough. Could you imagine dealing with a 78 year old drought now?

Nash, Grabner and even Zucc isn't a surprise.

McD is the one that is particularly risky. If you trade him, you HAVE to get a big return and you have to get it right.

There's no ifs, ands or buts. You need to stick the landing on that one, do your homework, and get a combination of picks and young NHL or close to NHL-ready talent.

You have to be sure that your deadline deal is better than you're going to get at the draft, while also being sure that you don't fall for the "new car smell" of draft day.

It’s the big what if of Rangers history. Even bigger than wondering what would have happened if Canada didn’t get involved in WWII.

I think the reasonable argument could be made that they would’ve won the Cup anyway and might have won more. We will never know, which makes it unreasonable in its own way.
