The player who will have the most say in how this team is next year is now Zibs. He needs to take the next step in his development.

Wait until this board turns on Shattenkirk. It's only a matter of time. What happens now? The Rangers weren't planning on spending nearly $7M on one player. Brooks wrote McDonagh will cost the Rangers $7.5M long term. Buyout Staal? The Rangers have the 2nd buyout window with Zibanejad/Fast filing for salary arbitration. Another buyout on the books?

They absolutely were planning on signing Shattenkirk. The Stepan trade makes no sense at all if they werent.

Who cares what Brooks writes. The guy is totally clueless.

Of course they were planning on it. It didn't come out of nowhere, it just wasn't a sure thing he would take less to come here. They didn't free up all that cap space to sit on their hands.

You and your boy were wrong. It didn't take 7.5 mill or 7 years.

You never let your agendas die. Zucc could pull you out of a burning building and you would still hate him.

Nash's 7.8M comes off the books next year...

Some of this crew just cannot avoid the doom and gloom. If this team happens to lose in game 7 of the finals it would be "told you so!!!"

Guys, we replaced Girardi and Klein (allegedly) with Brendan Smith and Kevin Shattenkirk full time. Think about that.

great contract, I wasnt the biggest Shatty signing fan but hard to argue against this contract

It legitimately was. This is not the 2012 roster anymore though. This is a defense core that is among the best in the league and a great group of forwards. The team as a whole is trending in the right direction. Hopefully we can win one for Hank, but if not Shesty looks to be capable as well. Cant say **** it and trade everyone because Hank is a year older.

The window WAS closing and then the team did what good teams do, they reinvented. Now there window is wide open again and their future looks extremely bright. Trading Brassard and Stepan went a long way to doing that.

Also, it's just absurd to me how people think this 6.5 million is equivalent to like 2007 contracts at 6.5 million. This amount is for a second tier D-Man. Shattenkirk is probably that. The top tier D-Men cost around 7-10 million per. We will realize that when McD is up in a few years.

What an answer.

St. Louis traded him for assets and futures. With him taking a discount to play here and turning down potential trades with deals in place, it's the option St. Louis had to take or lose him for nothing.

Washington hasn't gotten out of the 2nd round and gave oshie an 8 year deal. They're also in boarderline cap hell and couldn't resign him. I also think they traded for him to keep him away from us and Pittsburgh during he playoffs.

All I asked you to do is explain why you think he's bad defensively and a PP specialist. Which you still haven't answered.

Because I consume hockey. Don't try to paint this as an out there opinion, its very mainstream. Go to the St. Louis board and ask about his defending. The people who think he defends well are mainly those who look at his chart numbers, and decide thats enough proof he defends well.

Shattenkirk's reputation around the league is a PP specialist. Darren Dreger had a quote from a management type not too long ago that he was a bottom pairing PK specialist or something to that extent. I don't remember the exact quote. His coach's don't even put this guy on the PK. Doesn't mean all defensemen who PK are good, but if you are getting that much money and you aren't trusted by either of your past two teams to PK, what other conclusion should I draw other than he's not very good defensively?

Its a nice day when montreal spends just as much money and more term with Alzner than we did with Shatty.

You can not say unequivocally that the rangers are better....they downgraded substantially on raanta and stepan....need another center.

That was St Louis and Washington's conclusion.

And you know better?

Do the Rangers know better?

Maybe, since they have been more successful than the Caps or Blues in the last decade or so playoff wise.

We really don't know what each team's conclusion is.

So .... you really have nothing at all to base your opinion on, and it's being rightly dismissed.

I just can't believe the crap the Rangers get on the main Board...

We FINALLY have a GM that gets the game...first time since Neil Smith in his early years...

Now, the coach is a whole other issue...

Window still shut close if Hayes is a 2C

I can't remember the last time the Rangers had a guy that truly wanted to be here (plus a fan of the team) and put his money where is mouth is. Plus can play hockey (we all know he is not perfect) and hopefully fix one of our biggest issues...The damn powerplay

I would assume they don't plan on extending Rick Nash, RB.

Take his 7.8 away and the RFA and UFA extensions look a lot easier.

You were concerned about the 7x7 figure being thrown around, obviously this is a different can of worms.

The defense is where you want it now.. if one of these prospects can push into the top 6 Staal becomes a 7 until he waives on a trade

There's nothing not to love about this deal

* We got a very good offensive pp qb dman who's a right shot.

Girardi gone

* Our top 4 is pretty damn complete now.

Girardi gone

* The term is terrific. Who expected 4 years ?

Girardi gone

* the AAV is pretty much what we expected anyway.

Girardi gone

* he doesn't go to the bolts or anyone else. That's a plus.

Girardi gone
