Really? When? I think I know the difference between average and poor.I was making a different point that you were using it interchangeably.

I think this is true to a large extent. But also I don’t think it’s a “skating” issue. It’s a style and system thing. The main guys on the rangers have east-west tendencies so they look slower than a team that goes north-south. I don’t know if that’s all on the players or if it’s a coaching issue. Probably somewhere in-between. But either way, I think the board tends to conflate the play style with skating speed. I would argue that they’re separate things and the rangers players are not substantially better or worse skaters than the players on other teams.Maybe I'm just harsher on my own team than I am on other teams, but honestly watching us looks like I'm watching a different era than the rest of the league. I think we are by far the slowest team in the league, we look straight out of the late 90's/early 00's compared to the high flying uptempo teams of today. I can only laugh when people say we're such a skilled team playing pond hockey, focusing too much on playing pretty hockey. I think we play the ugliest, most caveman like style of hockey in the league
Pretty amazing considering he was handling the puck as well.MSG is showing the replay of Flames at the Garden, and Chytil got up to 22 mph on the tracker when scoring on his breakaway.
NO Bonino!Edmonton <-- Wheeler, Panarin, Bonino, conditional 1st
McDavid --> NYR
Its an interesting situation. I wonder if McDavid asked for a trade what it would take. I would assume something like Bread, Laf, Chytil, and draft picks.Edmonton <-- Wheeler, Panarin, Bonino, conditional 1st

Interesting concept, but I don't think this is really close. We can't trade Fox since he'd never approve, but that would be the closest in value. Otherwise, I'd think we're looking at something like Zib, Miller, Laf/KK (whoever they want more or both), then a combo of high-end prospects (Othmann, GP, etc) and #1's.Its an interesting situation. McDavid needs to ask out now. We can work out a fair deal.Interesting concept, but I don't think this is really close. I think Wheeler is going to surprise a lot of people here who probably haven't watched much of him throughout his career. He's still a good player but some of the talk around him I think people are expecting a completely washed and monumentally slow player simply because of his age and the narrative. He's good and adding a guy like him as a depth scorer is going to be huge.

Thanks for your imput. A lot of Jets fans have said similar things. I guarantee you a lot of people saying he is slow did not see 1 Jets game last year. They just regurgitate what they have read.Yeah Wheeler's straight line speed definitely isn't slow. When people say he has lost a step, that is true but he has lost a step from literally being one of the fastest guys in the league who used to blow past d-men at will in the early to mid 2010s to being about average in his skating. He played with a lot of fast players on the Jets and it wasn't his straightline speed holding him back. Reading this thread one would think he was Lucic on the Flames.
You should post the full play rather than a couple of screenshots. I watched that game, I watched that play. Wheeler thinks Dillon (#5 in the screenshot) is taking the guy driving the middle (Karlsson) and even signals to confirm. Wheeler is planning on being the first forward in the d-zone and attempting to take the trailer. One can accuse Wheeler here of making a bad read about if Dillon was in a position to take Karlsson or not but this is definitely not a case of him losing a footrace. At worst this is a bad defensive read (and I am not even convinced it is that). The full play:
This is out board! lolI was accusing him of making a bad read.
You're probably not familiar with out board but I'm a former high major DOBO. I'm the reason this board has any player evaluation integrity. Say my name.
Not sure if it was shared but at about 19mins in this link the jets beat discusses wheeler, pros, cons, attitude, what to expect in the room, ECT. This is Canadian beat that is around all the time, not USA bear which drops twice a week for an article.
Very consistent w some of what I've said. Good playmaker (not a shooter), not fast at this point, takes bad penalties at times, his personality will interject into the room (not always a good thing w him) and he will run his mouth, needs a limited role (specifically said 12-14mins a game which is 3rd line role, but we know he's going to be on a top 6 with pp time). Beat writer specifically pointed out that he thinks nyr has established culture to help control wheeler, although we know that this org is actually trying to identify a culture after firing turk and bringing a Sargent in like lavy.
Player personalities and room structure mean so much. People get infatuated w points contracts. This could work out but it could just as well be a grenade.

He hasn't played a game lolas time has gone on, I really love the signing.
Was 'meh' about it when it happened, thinking 'more of the same ol' Rongos'
and?He hasn't played a game lol
It will probably change againand?
my perception of the signing has changed
No, this can't be. He is going to use the Rangers and play with Panarin or Mika to build his value and then sign that bigger multi year deal when he is a year older. And, like we all knew:
"Lo and behold, enter Blake Wheeler, a free agent for the first time in his 15-year career following Winnipeg’s buyout of the final season of a five-year contract worth $8.25 million per. The winger — who posted 55 points (16-39) — had multiple offers for multi-year deals."
He came here on a discount to win. It's pretty irrefutable.
Edited to add:
“Blake wants to win the Cup, and he believes this is the right spot for that,” agent Matt Keator, who also represents fellow Blueshirts Chris Kreider and Adam Fox, told Slap Shots. “Chris [Drury] took care of his trade deadline work this week. There’s not going to be a better rental.”

I think it will work out and if it doesn't there is very little risk. I also want a guy who is a bit of a hard ass. That is exactly what this team needs.Bizarre theory to be sure.
If he can replicate last season and be a big body forward he helps this team. Period. Trouba was so shocked that he was serious about coming here in a discount that it says a lot. I’m not against a voice I’m the room that’s unafraid to speak. I think we need it. I hope it works out for both parties.
you shut your mouthIt will probably change again
