Confirmed with Link: Rangers sign Benoit Pouliot (1 year, $1.3M)

I'd prefer Pouliot rather than Powe/Rupp/Asham too, but I'd prefer players like Clutterbuck, Bickell, etc. over Pouliot, even if those players scored less than him.

Absolutely but those players cost
Clutterbuck: Top prospect
Bickell - 4m/yr
Clarkson - 5m/yr

In terms of overall team construction I'd rather have someone like Pouliot for 1.3M and then be able to use that 2.5-3.5M savings to build a better top 6/top 4

But yea of course, if you happen to get lucky and develop one of them that's the best scenario but honestly in that scenario you should just trade the guy since they clearly are worth a ridiculous amount.
 
I really like this signing at that rate. Upgrades skill in the b6. Now move some of the old crap for draft picks and to clear cap space
 
Great thing about moore and pouliot are they are both 1 year deals. Players tend to play better in walk years, it affords the rangers cap flexibility for next offseason as well as the option to trade them at the deadline or let them walk if a prospect steps up. Great stuff

The extra depth in camp will allow AV and his coaching staff to really have a formidable group to choose from and work with.


As uneventful as today has been for the Rangers compared to years past, it may be one of the most effective and smart free agent opening days in years

Thanks for this... Until it was explained I couldn't imagine why Tampa wouldn't have QO'd him.

Another wrinkle in the new CBA that I certainly didn't know.

So a team can't just walk away unless the contract is over 3.5M?

Jeez.

No problem. I mentioned a few days ago in one of the other threads, but players like Pouliot and Mueller are going to become common sights on the UFA market under the new CBA with the new restrictions on team's walk-away rights.
 
Pretty one dimensional but brings a team need, he can put the puck in the net. Guy will play 3rd line and help the 2nd unit PP. Put him on a line with Brassard and a mucker that will dig pucks out of the corner and you have a solid 3rd line.

For all the *****ing the PA did this is a nice little (in the loosest sense of the word) added bump for them.

How long until this bites us in the arse?
 
At a certain point you need some offensive jump in that 3rd line, not just defensive grinders, thats why I like this.

Pouliot is a supremely talented player with chicken legs. He ALWAYS falls down, to the point where it renders him pretty ineffective at times. He is very streaky and can disappear for long stretches but when he is on, he is really on.

Good value at what you got him for, just keep him as Top-9 depth and you will be happy.

No, not close to 51. I believe with today's deals, if we signed our RFAs then we'd be at 48. At no point can a team exceed the 50 SPC limit, even if it's for just a moment.

We have Boyle who is 6'6 and has just as bad chicken legs...falls downs all the time :laugh:

Thanks for the input. I think the plan is to use him in a 3rd/4th line role.
 
Hopefully he's improved his balance since his Hab days. Watching some videos of him to refresh my memory he's got some size (not sure if he uses it all the time but that's nice) and he can motor, also used in the shoot out which is nice. Nice rangy speed and some skill, which I'd rather have then Pyatt in AVs system.

"The scouting report on Pouliot has always been that he's big, he can skate, he's got skill; but the question was: 'will he get his nose dirty by going to the net and will he make things happen in the really 'dirty' areas to try to score goals?' And the experience so far from the Montreal Canadiens and their coaching staff is that they have seen a player who is really committed and willing to pay a physical price to win battles and score goals in the tough areas."

Pulled that from an old article when he was with the Habs. Hopefully at 26, he'll really start to come into his own with the Rangers but he really seems like a streaky player... That being said, 1 year deal at that price - pretty much a steal. Great depth move
 
1 year deal for a 26 year old fighting to make some real money in the NHL. If he's going to have a decent year, this is how you find out.
 
This is a good signing. Still young, good size. When he is on his game he is difficult to play against. Major difference between him and Pyatt? Pouliot is a much better skater.

I am thinking they want him for the 3rd/4th line. In Boston, he was a very effective 4th liner.

I love this signing. Adds some speed size and skill to the bottom lines. Will he play lw or center?? Will he be RFA at seasons end?
