He was a slighly better than average goalie in the league under Renney. And Renney too played a defensive system, just not anything like ol Torts

He was a regular Vezina finalist, and that, to you, is "slightly better than average"? Freaking hopeless.

Two things:

1- Henrik has NEVER really been a "start the season on fire" kind of goalie.

2- By his own admission, he had to change his style of play a bit to adjust to the new pad size regulations. He's still adjusting. He'll figure it out sooner rather than later.

I like fighting. I like hard hitting. Enforcers are useless.

It has to be a team identity. If you assume (1) player is going to make the difference, then the rest of the team is lacking.

It's like expecting one player to change a team from the worst offensive team in the league, to the best. Not going to happen.

Last night didn't show you that the team was lacking?

And yes, one player can make a difference in a teams mindset.

That one player needs to be big, fast, aggressive and consistent in landing big hits The rest of the line feeds on that, and other lines feed on that lines aggressiveness.

we've all played the game, we all know it takes one guy to start it, then the line as a whole gets it going, then the other lines look to match the aggression.

That's why fighting was used as a tactic in the 80's because guys fed off of the emotion of the moment.

It starts with one guy, one.

Is it just me or were the Sharks rubbing it in. That 4th Hertl goal, at that stage of the game and with the score the way it was came off as cockiness. The kid is 19 and needs a lesson IMO. Maybe not going out and giving the guy a headshot but pay your dues in this league. Hope he fizzles out and is in the AHL by seasons end.

19 year old kid playing his third game in NHL and living his dream so he should start thinking on breakaway 'i better not score so i don't come off as a cocky person or think just shoot it somewhere around the pads, maybe it goes in or maybe not but atleast i won't come out as a cocky player'

Please, comments like yours are just embarassing.

Hank is a slow starter, my mom even mentioned that during preseason and she admits she doesn't pay nearly as much attention to the team as my dad or I, they do watch all the games together though.

Do you think I am disagreeing with the premise it was lacking? I'm not.

You need players who can play that style of game. Wanting to and being able to are (2) totally different things.

They need more players willing to do it on a consistent basis.

You're coming as close as one can come of convincing me that a 9-2 loss is acceptable in some way, but I don't think I'll ever get over that hump.

People continually ask why the '11-12 team is so revered. For me, its because they showed up to play every night with no excuses.

That team didn't have games like last night, but neither did last year's team. They didn't show up in a number of games. That 4-0 loss to the Habs, 4-1 loss to the Blues, and a number of other games.

I don't think the non-response to the Nash hit was a coaching decision. Just like I didn't think the lack of response to Gaborik fighting in Philly was Torts fault.

I honestly don't. I know some fans like to write the story for the team before the season even got under way and the lack of response last night helps a lot of agendas on this board....

With all that being said IT IS troublesome that the team didn't have ANY response last night. It's something that should be addressed by the Captain and the alternates. No, I'm not blaming this on Callahan but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be talked about.

I just think a lot of posters LOVE when nights like last night happen. It's the perfect storm for the rhetoric spewing posters...

It hurts seeing that Hertl goal, but it is what it is. Very impressive young player. There will be a time in his career when he doesn't do that, but at 19 he's just having some fun.

You want to teach him a lesson? Next time show up for the ****ing game and beat his team.

lack of heart on the team, however, is ****ing pathetic, but I have to say the Wolfpack game I went to last weekend was WAY more entertaining and full of action (and they LOST) over this **** of ****

They are out there. The Rangers have one that they keep tucked away in CT.

Haley is one of those guys.

get him to the team for the next game asap.

get him dressed and tell him, Asham and Dorsett to hit EVERYTHING.

Create as much havoc as possible

Just wait another 3yrs until McIlrath is ready to join the club as a 6/7th defenseman.

Payback time.

Asham can't do that. He is too slow.

What are you talking about? That team was terrible!!! I mean, didn't you read genius boy's op-ed debunking the idea of that team actually being good? :sarcasm:

HORRIFIC pre-season, 1-2 start with one of the worst losses I've seen in my 25 years of watching the team. Yeah, but once AV gets his system in place, everything is gonna be coming up roses!!!

In all seriousness, this team has no identity, at all. Sure, we just got a new coach, but I'm not sure he knows what our identity will be, either.

Right, thats the ticket.

Because if we're going to lose 9-2 again, at least do it colorfully.

anyone blaming AV for last night ot Torts for the Gabby situation does not know the game and cannot be taken seriously.

Last night Asham or Dorsett needed to go after Stuart. Plain and simple. Should be ashamed of themselves today.

The Gaborik situation was on Girardi who did nothing. He redeemed himself a bit a year later, but again, it's the responsibility of the guys on the ice or dressed on the bench to address that situation regardless of the coach's directive.

if it wasn't Girardi in the heat of the moment to confront Carcillo then, it should have been someone else later in the game.

Same thing last night. If the guys on the ice did not immediately address Stuart, then one of Asham or Dorsett should have done so EARLY 2nd period.

I don't care about actual reults as much as I care about effort early in the season.

Last nights effort was piss poor.

Yup..he will do the same thing Avery and Prust did for the team...with less points.

Anything is better than last night.

or are you ok with the overall effort regardless of result?

Im not OK with anything that happened last night.

Im far more concerned with this team upping their compete level and fixing the defense than circus side-show antics.

The Nash hit, while dirty, was not some jarring blow that demanded a direct response -- in fact, if Nash didn't get a headache 7 shifts later, nobody would be talking about it.

Hertl's final goal was poetic justice -- the team deserved to be embarrassed further after that effort.

What did he do?

He scored between his legs....Malik style....

To me, a goal is a goal...regardless of how you do it. If that's how you feel comfortable shooting, then go for it.

Much ado about nothing. You don't like it? Next time play some defense.

Who said he was? Are you implying that there is only (1) possible way for this team to improve on last night's game?

I'm not implying anything.

I asked a simple question. nights like last night in terms of results are going to happen.

What should never happen is after the 6th goal the team bends over, grabs their ankles and says "Hit me three more times there big guy"
