While some folks will cream their pants if/when McIlrath lands a big hit or gets into a fight, the real thing to watch is how he handles the speed of the NHL game.

Zero clue how this addresses the real problem, goal scoring.

Hope McIlrath sticks and adds some stability to the blueline, which is also becoming a problem as this squad continues to slip.

His 'gap control' might be exactly what we need ! :propeller

Seriously, everytime he is mentioned nowadays people always bring up that gap control, somewhere along the line this became a be all end all talking point about his game. I really am not concerned about him closing gaps, the bigger picture is can he think the game at the pro level. Does he keep it simple or does he play his game? Either way he's bound to make mistakes, its nature of the game. Don't like the idea of throwing him to the Wolves, but a cup of coffee at this point might be a good move.

I hope The Undertaker was not a wasted draft pick. I wonder how long until the fanbase turns on him if he does not deliver. LOL

I'm actually more excited to see him lay some big hits rather than fight, the fighting will come not worried about that...Hit like a freight train Big Mac

I'd be sick to my stomach if people flip after a few mishaps

Our whole defense besides McD and occasionally Strals have been having mishaps all year

The way I see it, as long as he doesn't turn the puck over more than Del Zotto and bring along his physicality with that, he'll be fine

I don't care if he makes a mistake. His mission is to create a spark or two, and get the team going.

Sounds/looks like your mind is already made up, which is just as bad as bashing the kid after a few bad plays.

That may take some time as he'll probably be a step behind most of the night until he gets used to the speed.

Yeah not expecting an overly aggressive game from him. Just play it a bit safe and make your presence known whenever something breaks out around Hank.

That's what I'll be keeping an eye on the most in the next couple of games.

There was a little too much circle jerking around Hank in the NSH game, would love to see it kept in check a touch bit more when he's on ice.

It will be too, he's no nonsense when it comes to his goalies and teammates. Everyone that has been talking about the Rangers lacking an answer to the other teams dirtbags should be happy.

Giving the kid the benefit of the doubt is somehow equal to turning on him?

Only in your head.

If he plays like crap tonight, Ill be sure to mention it.

Thats not going to doom his career, and it doesnt mean everything is going to be OK with him.

Im quite willing to admit I have no idea how a prospect will turn out and theres no guarantee of anything, which seems to chafe a lot of the so-called "experts" on this board that marry themselves to young players.

The Rangers need some degree on physical play and size if they want to win. Even the Hawks which weren't the big and bruising team like Boston and LA had Bickell. The Rangers have nobody. Don't mention Dorsett because is a small player.

I disagree about the big hits because of the speed of the game laying wood is what this kids all about..He will get his chances and will deliver..Its in his blood

Really excited to see how he handles himself, its been a long road to get to this point here's to hoping he hits the ground running and can help this team get back on track.

its a good thing the Ducks aren't playing tonight, a certain defenseman (whose name rhymes with growler) would have been guaranteed at least a hattrick

*not trying to derail this thread

Can't lay the big hits if he's not in position to deliver them. I agree that it's part of his game, but it's a part of his game we likely won't see much until he gets more comfortable at the NHL level.

i think the fact that he is being brought up is sending a message to the rest of the team that things need to change. i believe a cup of coffee call up was in the cards anyway, but this is sending a message as well.

this team needs a shake up. back to back bad losses at home and a team that has looked overmatched and uninterested in both those shellackings. they were booed off the ice against washington and that cant continue.

at this point, all the kid needs to do it lay someone out, or beat someone up, or god forbid, score a goal and msg will have a collective orgasm.

this fan base is desperate for something good to happen to this team. if big mac plays his cards right and throws a thunderous check or two, gets into a tussle protecting henrik and some how manages to score the game winning goal, he will become legend in his first game.

maybe none of that happens and hes invisible most of the night- not a bad thing, and this team comes out and plays with passion, speed and purpose and wins comfortably- then honestly, this kid may be just what the doctor ordered.

i think the most important thing is to reward the kid for his good play down there. kids wanna see they have a chance if they play well..at this point, im considering this a lost season, we can, howver, get our team to a point where some of these kids could be ready for next season.

im expecting a huge overhaul by this team next year.

Well said.

If all he does is punish people standing in front of Hank ill be happy.

Everything on top of that will be gravy

It would be nice to have someone patrolling the blue line that makes other players pay attention to who is on the ice.

McI lays out Dubi ? :sarcasm:
