What I find fascinating is that it's used to explain why Mittelstadt is a top-5 prospect in the world but we never hear the same argument for Andersson who had 7 goals in 7 games and was the leader, but in name and with his performance, of the Swedish team that was 2 minutes away from winning the tournament.

Playing half the tournament with a destroyed shoulder nonetheless. Chad.

Why not? I feel there's an over-reliance on top-pair defensemen in the NHL

The reason is because of a lack of quality on the third pairing. They play a lot because they are the best players. Throwing in Steve Kampfer and Claesson to the bench isn't going to make NYR want to play Skjei and Shattenkirk any less.

See, NHL teams don't invest in good 3rd pair D-men because they play their top-pair 25 minutes a night. Cause and effect

It’s an interesting topic. Wouldn’t even need more ‘fringe’. The middle pair generally has plenty of energy to split up those extra big minutes the top d guys get. NHL teams jut feel that, in general, defenseman are able to play longer shifts because of their ability to conserve engergy due to style of play. If teams could get away playing their first line for 25+ they would but most guys would collapse at the half way mark of the season. So as long as the teams feel the extra 5 min or so the top D plays does not hinder the other 20 they play, they’ll keep doing it rather than give a 2nd pairing type of guy those extra 5 min.

I doubt this has been researched too much, as coaches just go with the status quo and feel comfortable playing top D guys excessively because it’s been done for ages and they ‘trust’ them. If top D guy f***s up then ‘mistakes happen’ and no one questions why the top guy was out there while having already played over a period’s worth of hockey. If the same mistake is made by the second or 3rd pairing guy then the coach is questioned heavily as to why the top guys were not out there.

Folks used to complain McD only played 21-23 min a night, ‘He’s our top pairing guy, let’s play him as such’ etc but I’m not sure McD would have been able to handle it consistently so we often saw Holden in big moments (poor shift management throughout the game could have been a large factor of course as well).

I think you can get away with three good pairs versus 1 top pair an ok pair and a bad pair but having an elite defenseman to play a lot is always preferable if you can swing it

It does until you consider that your top pairing dmen only playing 18-19 minutes a game isn't a great idea.
The point is, it’s a five man unit as opposed to a defense pairing and a forward line. And I’d assume the best five man unit plays most. If the rosters are bigger and they play four five-man units rather than three, that’s a different issue.

Not that there was reason to doubt Tobbe, but Kjellberg is officially on Dubuque's roster for this season.

Bernhardt is the only guy unaccounted for.

I think we can safely file Bernhardt under a "bust" file. He played only 3 games last season?

He has something wrong with his hips. He was supposed to have a procedure to help correct it towards the end of the season, but then I stopped seeing any coverage of him. That's why he missed the whole year, though.

And yes he is definitely a bust. I only track him because he still qualifies under the old HF standards.

I expect updates through his first paycheck at Burger King.

In all seriousness thanks for always updating. Even up until the ‘Unsolved Mysteries’ episode airs.

Any idea why we didn't sign any college free agents this year like we usually do with Vesey, Hayes, Pionk, etc.?

Because none of them are really on that same level of hype/skill.

Actually, I don't recall seeing news of any NCAA UFA signings from any team.

That, and the signing of Meskanen and Lindqvist meant we didn't really have a reason to look at college free agents. But yeah, there wasn't any college free agent worth signing.
