I'm sure you have vivid memories of watching Dave Gagner tear it up for the Brantford Alexanders back in 83.
Traded for Jari Gronstrand - a common bad trade the nyr were known for in those years .
Ridley Dahlen etc ..

He was certainly a top prospect.

Gagner would be a good point to in patience with guys like Lafrenniere.

Othman is a guy who finds space and shoots rockets - on net - in the net.

The thing I love about Othmann's goal scoring ability is he literally scores goals every way. Wrist shots from the slot, one timers from the circle, breakaways, deflections, point shots, sneaky shots off the rush, rebounds in the blue paint, etc. He scores them everyway, he is the definition of a natural goal scorer.

Othmann forcing himself into the conversation for next year. Lots of wings in the organization, something has to give

You think he’s nothing more than a 4th line guy? That would be a major disappointment and I have a bit higher hopes for him than that

Why would it be a disappointment? Cuylle was always projected to be a 4th liner with potential 3rd line upside. Berard has already exceeded that.

I’ve seen them all since 77’
He’s the best
Othman is a left handed Brett Hull

There’s some go back a little further and even further than me but hey Rick Middleton? Don Murdoch? Middleton IMO the worst trade the Rangers made in my time following the team. Murdoch if he hadn’t gotten distracted so much by the NYC nightlife might have given Bossy a real run for his money of best goal scorer in the area. Murdoch could flat out score goals in his sleep.

But the Rangers best ever draft choices are Leetch and Lundqvist and maybe a case could be made for Sheshterkin to join them pretty soon.

I think there’s too much talent there to work with and he brings a somewhat unique skill set to our group of forwards, I think you might be selling him short, possibly by a great deal but we’ll find out I guess and you’re certainly entitled to a different opinion was just curious why you felt that way

Berard is a great prospect in his own right, no argument there

For me, the biggest difference between Cuylle and guys like Othmann/Berard is that he's the 3rd or 4th best player on his team while the others are carrying their team game after game.

Cuylle is having a great season, don't get me wrong, but Ty Ronning at the same age scored 60 in juniors. Ryan Gropp had 84 points in his D+2 in juniors.

Gropp had Barzal, Ronning had Benson and Cuylle is playing with Wyatt Johnston who is easily their best player. I hope Cuylle proves me wrong, I really do. But I guess I'd be more impressed if he had a role as significant as Othmann.

Fair enough I just think he’s a better overall prospect than guys like Gropp or Ronning and not every player has to be a line or play driver

I think he has the skill set to be a banger who also happens to have a wicked shot and that potentially could lead to a complimentary role somewhere higher than the 4th line and maybe even on a second PP unit some day

Here’s to hoping they both succeed, would be huge for this team moving forward

I'd say he's pretty much on par with where Gropp was at age 20. A lot will depend on how he develops from here on.

Yeah, that’s true but watching Cuylle he’s more symbiotic than parasitic. Johnston is great but they benefit from EACH OTHER. You give him the right linemates at the NHL level and IMO he’s a 3rd or 2nd liner who can play up on the 1st for you if there are injuries. If he’s a 4th liner that’s a hell of a forward corps. We shall see I guess
While we are on the subject, I’ll go there: Johnston is the type player NYR should be targeting in a trade (if not the draft) and even overpay for.

I think what might set them apart, at least for me, is their mindset, Gropp always seemed to have a losers mentality and maybe not the greatest work ethic and if he wasn’t scoring then he had nothing left to offer

I think what sets them, apart is Gropp was a PRODUCT of Barzal, while Cuylle is benefitting from playing with Johnston. There’s a difference there.

Gropp and Cuylle are nothing alike. At all. The hope for Cuylle should be in. Support role where he can use his size and physicality to create room for his line mates. In that sense he projects to a good spot for this team with higher level skilled players.

He’s going to be someone they need to be patient with.
Exactly. While Johnston is obviously the superior prospect, I dare say that playing with Cuylle has been good for him too. It’s not just a one way street.
And yeah he might take a while.

Never thought Cuylle would play in the National League. Maybe a token game or two.

Cuylle plays a physical north south game. He just has to adapt that to the pros really. A heavier, meaner more physical player than Gropp who never rounded out his game as a pro as if he was meant to be top line point producer or nothing else. He didn’t diversify his game. The Rangers don’t need Cuylle to be a top line guy. He’s big and he hits and he can do a Sammy Blais impression pretty well if he puts his mind to it—maybe with a few more goals and a fight here and there. We already have more talented guys for the top lines. Of our forward prospects I’d say there are 3 guys I think are easily above the rest—Othmann, Berard and Cuylle. The rest for me are big question marks or not at all likely. Those three though are IMO the best and all of them are likely with the team we have going forward more likely to be in our bottom 6 at least for a while.
