Let’s even say Keane is nothing more than a third pairing defenseman. Is that a bad thing for a fourth round pick?

I don’t know about anyone else, but if we’re getting depth from lower picks, on top of major contributions from our high picks, that’s fantastic.

As for Lundkvist, the kid is definitely top four potential. Maybe not the flashiest top 4, or a guy who catches your eye with one particular skill or trait, but his upside is definitely second pairing.

A 3rd pairing defenseman from a 2nd round pick is pretty much a very good pick. Let alone a 4th

He thinks every scrub is a top half player whose value is showing gifs but without being able to project actual value.

Dirty little secret: most of these guys aren’t making the show. The easy choice is that most of these cats don’t make it.

As much as I like Joey Keane., I’ll be amazed that he’s more than a 3rd pair D unless expansion allows him a deeper role.

As much as I like Nils Lundkvist, is he ever breaking top 4? He would have a chance once Staal goes away, but Miller is a more likely option and Sean Day is a better 3rd pair option(and I know the Rangers staff have Day on their sh*tlist for a reason beyond actually watching him play. )

Careful now. Your bias is showing.

Who are you and why do you pretend to A) think you know me B) know anything about Swedish hockey?

Nils Lundkvist is currently deployed in a top pairing role in the SHL which is the 3rd best league in the world.

HockeyAllsvenskan is definitely a better league then ECHL and it’s not very close either.

When they picked Lundqvist he seemed like he could be a top 4, and everything he has done since has only raised expectations.

Keane was a 3rd rounder--not a 4th. Just saying. If he eventually becomes a bottom pairing NHL D it's a pretty good result. He's a very good skater but he's not ready. From what I've seen he needs to get stronger and he needs to get better defensively. He would not have been a realistic option if DeAngelo had continued his holdout. He should be in Hartford and I can see him struggling a bit there this season. Lundkvist is well ahead of him as a RD prospect IMO.

Allsvenskan is probably a better league than the ECHL but not by much. Its much closer to the coast than it is the AHL. Top Allsvenskan guys are still guys who couldnt cut it in the AHL

This is the exact same discussion that we had with the KHL vs AHL thing from a couple weeks back (where the top handful of KHL teams are totally different than the rest of the league, and the bottom of the KHL is embarrassing). You can't just compare the leagues as a whole--particularly a league like Allsvenskan, where there is a promotion and relegation system. The top handful of Allsvenskan teams are not much different than the bottom level of the SHL, which we know is probably the third-best league in the world (I'll take it over Liiga). So, you have to talk about the top Allsvenskan teams differently as any one of them can find themselves playing in the SHL in a year's time. Conversely, the bottom of Allsvenskan has teams that are on par with some ECHL teams. Jakob Ragnarsson's old team Almtuna was absolute trash last season and was spared from relegation to HockeyEttan only because Pantern was broke.

So, in my opinion, the average Allsvenskan team is better than the average ECHL team. The top handful of Allsvenskan teams are substantially better than even the good ECHL teams. The bottom of Allsvenskan, those handful of teams are probably slightly worse than an average ECHL team and maybe significantly worse than a top ECHL team. But again, you can't just compare the leagues as single entities, since there is a great deal of fluidity, in particular involving the Swedish Association with promotion and relegation.

I feel we have this discussion every month....

The bottom line is the KHL, SHL, Allsvenskan, Liiga and in some cases the NLA are all professional leagues with players popping in and out of who has the capability to play in the NHL. Will they or won't they make it is entirely up to the player and the management.

I’ve seen Sjallin play a couple of periods in the SHL tonight.

A few thoughts: I’ve checked around a bit, people are still really high on him. You find stuff like “he will become a top D in NA one day”.

The kid has had a lot of problems with injuries. Missed a full year of hockey when he was younger. Got a concussion last seasons.

When I see him now, I would have been OK with his play if he was 18 y/o. I definitely feel that he is a bit weak in terms of overall motor for a 20 y/o. Speed, explosiveness in his skating etc. Physical strength in 1 on 1 battle.

So I can’t say that I think he is on track or something like that. I anything I think he is a bit behind the curve.

At the same time, maybe more will come later given how much hockey he has missed. But I don’t want to use it as an explanation for how he surely will get much better. If you miss time you miss time, you can’t win it back. Reset the clock. I wouldn’t write him off, give him a few more years. But he is definitely a log shot category.

Watching Själin and he’s played a good unflashy game in a defensive role.

Bad pass but nice recovery.

His positioning and stickwork defensively is what stands out. First pass is solid and he’s good 1v1. He really needs to stay healthy for a full season. Obviously needs to improve every part of his game. First couple steps are slow but the other parts of his skating are good.

I’m a bit sad he’s getting used in quite the defensive role, I get why but I would have liked to see him in a more balanced role to help him develop his offensive game more.

TPS is off to an uncharacteristically slow start in Liiga. 1-1-1 through 3 games, with only 7 goals scored. They have Pajuniemi listed as the 1RW playing with Korpikoski and Petteri Wirtanen at center. We'll see how the TOI breaks down, but it's nice to see Pajuniemi back healthy and getting an opportunity on the top line.

Pajuniemi had his first goal, was +1, 2 shots, 2 PIM, 14+ TOI. Paju did some good work around the end boards, fed a guy for a point shot, and cleaned up the big rebound in the high slot.

Aaltonen picked up his first point of the year, an assist. He was even with 4 SOG and played 13:32. He has 14 shots through 5 games (primarily on the third line) which is good. His assist was nice, picked the pocket of the opponent at the blue line, dangled a bit, then fired a perfect pass to a dude that was wide-open in the slot for an easy one.
