You are looking at Panarin at age 24-27 and complain that scouts didn't see this when he was 18... Players develop. His draft year wasn't exactly reason to draft him high. This happens sometimes with players who develop at a later age.

Did you know Pajuniemi went undrafted as well?
That's somewhat disingenuous. I think it's generally understood that when we talk about undrafted prospects, we're talking about guys who were never drafted, period, and then exhausted their eligibility. And then guys who are taken in their second or third years of eligibility are "over-age" draft picks (a term I don't like but accept).

Pajuniemi went undrafted in 2017, and then was picked in the 6th round in 2018. My point here is that not only did 31 teams pass on him several times in 2018, all 30 teams passed on him every single time in 2017. IF Pajuniemi turns into a Arvidsson-type player, it will be a great pick but I hate when these exceptions (because that's what they are) are used to criticize literally every scout working in the NHL.

Using today's performance to judge scouts' decisions years ago is ridiculous.

I get it, and I don't disagree. Just seemed like you were playing "gotcha!" when it wasn't really fair. Anyway, moving on.

TPS is generally a powerhouse but is having an uncharacteristically terrible year. Kakko was on that team last season. Korpikoski plays there. Heikkinen was there the past few years. Reunanen was part of the organization. Etc.

Honestly if you asked me about Pajuniemi coming into the year, I'd say he was a marginal prospect at best. Even earlier in the year when I watched him, I didn't see it. He didn't have any standout skills that would make him an NHL player. I haven't watched him lately so I don't know if something has changed, but the numbers are undeniable. Obviously numbers don't make the player, but he has definitely jumped back on the radar.

I go to all TPS home games and until ~10 games into this season I would have bet a decent amount on him never seeing NHL. Wouldn't take that bet anymore. His decision making is better and he's developed a really heavy shot seemingly over summer. Too bad he's not getting any help from the rest of the team.

That's interesting about his shot because coming into the year, I always thought of him more of a creative playmaker than a scorer. And then suddenly he has 10 goals but 2 assists or whatever it was. So I was surprised that he suddenly started filling up the net (and taking a ton of shots).

Maybe he worked with Ales Kotalik over the summer. LOL.

You have now officially been deputized. You must report back here after every game.

I don’t make the rules, I just report on them. :dunno:

Panarin looked pretty good when he was 19 though...

Basically led that come back with his two goals. Still surprised no teams took a flyer on him in the later rounds. You can clearly see he had a lot of raw skill at that time.

So cool, I have no recollection of Panarin from that WJC.

Super interesting to see how he is a pretty choppy skater but have really good agility. Like he is already and expert to turn like 180’, BUT not get stuck standing still after it. Always being able to push a way a full stride.

He probably get drafted today if we could ff time, remember that this was at the height of the KHL factor pushing Russian players back in the draft. Jagr was playing for Omsk. Teams still put a premium on size. But if it’s in his draft year or D+1 it’s super late. Maybe mid round as a double over-after. If that.

But it really humbles you when it comes to amateur scouting. Who could tell that Panarin would develop into an almost perfect NHL player that with ease can control the NHL game? There are many special talents every year. I would bet on that he had super good natural coordination and that he physically was underdeveloped which held back his skating. But to quantify that back in 09-10, it’s not easy...

What injuries have Pajuniemi had? I saw him some back in the summer right after he was drafted and thought his skating looked really promising. But that seems to have tackled off. I’ve not seen much of him lately — but by the reports his skating hasn’t been noteworthy. I wonders if his injuries have held him back.

Looks like the only college prospect that has a game this weekend or next is Hughes tonight.

Hunter Skinner and the Knights lost 5-3 last night. He didnt have any points and was -1.

It doesn't look like Gross played for the Generals last night in their 3-2 loss. Not sure if hes hurt?

Robertson and the Oil Kings won 5-1. He had a goal and an assist.

Reunanen starting as the 7th d in Channel One Cup, but no biggie since I am sure they are rolling 4 LDs and 3 RDs.
Reunanen did play today in Finland's win over Sweden. Anyone know where to find ice time stats?

Interesting article in the Athletic about Casey Middlestadt's struggles and whether he should be in the NHL or AHL. The author compares his struggles to those of Anderson's. Two interesting data points in the article. Of the 217 players drafted in 2017, here is where they are now playing:

  • AHL – 69
  • College – 51
  • Europe – 35
  • NHL – 24
  • Juniors – 17
  • ECHL – 14
  • Out of hockey – 7
And of the 31 first rounders, 16 in AHL and 15 in NHL that includes both Patrick and Valimaki, who are injured and neither of whom have played this year.

The point is that it is way too early to call anyone from that draft a bust in their D+2 year. The Rangers problem is that the draft was essential a 5-6 player draft of top players with the Rangers having a 7th pick and no team going off the board to have one of those top players slip. So pretty much anyone they were going to select at 7 was going to require some time.

Olof Lindbom lost today (4-1) with Mora against Calle Själin and Västerås.

Själin, a 4th round pick in 2017 by the Rangers, finished the game with a +1 rating in his debut for his new team.

I can't recall any major injuries. Also, looking at his stats on elite prospects, it looks like he's played more or less full seasons.
But it's true that his skating is nothing special. Here's hoping he manages to improve on that as well.

Looks like Robertson is picking it up defensively lately. Keane continues to have a heck of a season on a team with mostly career, AHL hasbeens. He's a guy you have to figure would have substantial value to teams in a deal. No idea who Gorton is going to deal or who for but I would think he's going to go for a big centerman prospect with a package deal. Still think Cozens is the guy. Buffalo needs depth. Keane would probably be a good future piece for them. Cozens will probably cost to pry away from them. You have to think they will ask for Georgiev. That would be tough. Eichel has broken through to the next level. I'd send Buchnevich there in a second in the right deal to get Cozens.

Yeah, he played in their first game too, regular rotation. His skating stood out.

Doesn’t look like he’s in the lineup for the final game vs Russia. BTW the game is played on the soccer stadium Gasprom Arena in St.Petersburg.

Correct me if I am wrong, but my knowledge is that Pajuniemi did his summer training, just to mention a few of many stars, Patrik Laine, Mikko Rantanen, Kaapo Kakko, Rasmus Ristolainen...
