KC has a gorgeous arena waiting for an NHL franchise, Sprint Center.
Seattle is very serious about getting both an NHL and NBA team.
Two 8 team divisions, two 7 team divisions.
The NHL is expanding by two, almost guaranteed. And probably sooner rather then later.
Coyotes move to Kansas City, because they're already prepared. New franchises in Seattle and the Greater Toronto Area. Columbus moves to the Atlantic Division. Now there are four 8 team divisions.

Quebec City is definitely in the mix for expansion in the next 2-3 years as well. Someone will have to move back to the Western Conference in a few years, no other way around it (which makes next year's 16-14 setup all the more idiotic).

Only way the Northeast division makes sense is if there are plans down the road to move Florida and or Tampa to Canada . Not a huge fan of the realignment as a Ranger fan.
As for the coaching position, AV has gotta be thinking that NYR are stalling no? Interview over, none others happening and he isn't the shoe in? Seems like they are buying time maybe for Tippett, or some unknown. Would like NYR to publicly 'thank Mess for wanting to do more for this team, but no thanks'.

Nashville is in the central time zone: they have never wanted to move east. Columbus and especially Detroit wanted to move east because they are the only teams in the eastern time zone and all their away games start late.
Looking at a map without the time zones doesn't explain it.
There's an issue with Quebec City. And its the same Issue that caused them to lose their franchise in the first place.
While they may love their hockey in Quebec City, is the local economy strong enough to support a major league franchise? It may not be. And they don't have an arena.
Kansas City has the arena. They've hosted NHL games in recent years. And they have a history with the league as well. Kansas City Scouts.
Seattle is building an arena to house an NHL and NBA franchise. They'll form a natural rivalry with Vancouver. Portlanders will be able to attend games if they want. 173 miles.
Toronto, the largest city in Canada, can support another franchise. New York can support 3, and its not a traditional hockey market like New England and the north-mid-west Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan area. Hamilton, Ontario.

If they kept to the current format, absolutely.
But the realignment is based on time zone. And its the reason for the Florida teams being in the new division they're going to be in. They are transient cities anyway. A lot of relocated and vacationing northerners. Including Canadians. The Florida teams will draw by facing Boston, Montreal, Toronto, Detroit. Big draw teams. These are now division games. The distance won't matter. Same time zone. Ticket sales may increase. No more Carolina, Atlanta, Winnipeg, DC. Small time teams. No history. Suddenly they now have division games against four original six clubs.

Seattle is large enough on its own, add decent distance to Portland, Tacoma, even Spokane (do the Flames lay claim to Spokane?).
There are enough satellite cities around Seattle. Close to Vancouver for a major rivalry to grow. Huge opportunity for the NHL.

Coyotes should go to Seattle. It makes sense. Seattle has history winning the first Stanley Cup in the US in 1917, with the Thunderbirds in the WHL, and being natural rivals to Vancouver and the Cali teams.

If hockey can work in Nashville, like it has been, it can work in Kansas City. The Phoenix disaster, by the way, has absolutely nothing to do with the viability of the market. Same thing in Atlanta. Business factors involving the arena are really the sole issue. Alas, I don't think KC will be the place anyway. The arena is pulling in scads of cash without an anchor tenant. There's no incentive to bring a team there.
I really believe that Seattle is the best bet, but the NHL would have to be pulling some serious MLB-type stuff to go there. At this moment, no arena is going to be built unless there's an NBA expansion there. The NHL would be moving into an arena totally unsuitable for hockey with the hopes that maybe, just maybe, the arena gets built. That kind of thing worked out for MLB when they moved the Expos to DC, but it's a huge risk.
If only Houston or Portland had ownership and arena managers who were interested in an NHL franchise, because both of those are great options with suitable arenas. Les Alexander and Paul Allen don't seem to be interested though. The NHL is, and should be, reluctant to go to QC on a relocation simply because the expansion fees are far more lucrative than the relocation ones and QC has an owner willing to pay it.
Agreed. I know the NHL looks at the south as an untapped market where they can develop fans, but Atlanta and Phoenix should seal the deal. Just look at attendance, the fact that no one wants to own the Coyotes, etc.., Don't make same mistake in KC.
Anyone want a coach for NYR that hasn't been mentioned?

That's completely untrue. If a 5th place team in one division has more points than the 4th in the other, you get a crossover situation.
That being said, technically, a 6th place team could have more points than the 3rd place team in another division and miss the playoffs. Not going to happen with anything resembling frequency, though.
