No matter what happens this series, I think it will be the start of a multi-year rivalry between these 2 franchises for Metro supremacy. Canes are the clear favorite because they are ahead of us in their timeline, but i think the Rangers will at least do enough to make it interesting and set the stage for a heavyweight battle next year

I sure like the fact that Kreider has probably scored 250 goals on Raanta already in their time together 😂

Lundkvist should have gotten more of a chance before the playoffs started. Or Jones.
Jones is the one that stings for me. The Rangers seem to have this idea that he would be abused in the playoffs, so instead we're playing defensemen who could not possibly be any more abused than they have been.

It's not just us, of course. NHL coaches really have this "so I don't get bit in the ass, I'll bite myself in the ass first" outlook.

Jones should be playing, or at least should have gotten a fair look at the end of the season when we were in "f*** it" mode.

Nils was getting eaten at the AHL level. We may have very well ended up losing this series if he played.

Plugging Jones and Brodzinski in for Braun and Reaves would be brainy moves. Improve the ability to move the puck out of our own end and add more speed to the 4th line forecheck.

If they can't grab one in Carolina I think this should be the move. Hopefully Goody comes back soon. That's what we need most.

The Rangers need to fix the second line to be able to do this next year. Ryan Strome is simply unable to play this game.

They have the fourth line horses to do it when healthy but the coach doesn’t seem interested in rolling those personnel out.

Crazier things have happened, but I think it behooves us all to treat this series as “gravy” and measure the team by how well they play compared to the bubble series.

I think that is the realistic expectation too.

It is a bit unfortunate that we don't have more time to prepare for this series. Under the cap, all teams will be stretched out to cover all bases. Tampas was a bit of an exception partly because they didn't have a roster that even remotely would fit under the cap, and they had so many overachieving players.

I have tried to analyze Carolina and they are definitely my favorite to win everything. But with that said, I am not at all surprised with how they defend in certain situations. I think Carolina would struggle heavily against like those 'peak' Pittsburg teams that we faced when Sid and Malkin played their best hockey. All their game is based on the ability to rattle teams and take them out of their comfort zone. They are so hard to get a hold of. But Boston's top line gave them big problems, but Boston have big big issues on that roster, and it was still as close as it was. They are definitely not elite at defending against a team that push them back.

If we don't take charge of things, I think we could lose 4-0 or 4-1 or something. I think that Carolina is the one team that our 'lets not shoot ourselves in the foot' approach is the most futile against. I think any other team could have serious problems with our ability to score timely goals, Shesty and solid play from time to time. But I am fairly sure that won't even remotely be enough against Carolina.

To OTOH take charge we need to change the fundamentals of our game a bit. Get the puck deep and slow things down. Really challenge Slavin and co. Have Panarin, Laf and co test their foot speed every chance they get. Put pucks along the boards more while and be a little more cautious putting it on net or looking for a cross ice pass. With this also comes keeping a 3rd forward a little higher so that Ds got their back covered if they step up to keep pucks in. This is more how those best teams from 10 years ago played. The downside is that against a defense that collapse around their own net, you get very predictable. You will score fewer goals. But looking at the teams that have had the most success against Carolina, this is how they have played. Parked down low more often than not.

It's a cyclical process. If Gallant went with Jones and it didn't work, every member of the media and mainstream "analyst" community would skewer him for it. Going with players like Nemeth is just the least risky option for coaches.

This is true. He has to deal with urchins like Brooks who will turn blue and drop over if somebody under 6'5" is in the lineup.

Well, we're here, might as well make something of it. Getting today and tomorrow off is a big deal for this team. Need a little reset when switching series. In years past when they'd go 7, Game 1 of the next series was always tough. Usually it was 1 day off and you go back at it.

Lets see if Andersen is ready to go this series. He's got the playoff hiccups, so maybe they can exploit that in game 1 or 2. He'll also have a decent amount of rust.

I do expect a ton of Rangers fans there for the 1st two games. People will buy however they can. They're limiting sales to their area on Ticketmaster, but you know people will be able to get their hands on tickets. Don't think you see a 50/50 split like the regular season, but a 65/35 split is very likely.

What is wrong with this guy?

He can't stand his co-worker who's a Rangers fan. It escalated from there

This is good for us though. Everyone he's going for is losing

This bodes well for us.

Despite how it looks... he's not dumb. He gains all the small markets with championing them while making New York, the biggest market, hate follow him.

I looked and they weren't crazy expensive, especially compared to MSG.

This just isn't a Reaves series. I wonder if he plays the role of Nemeth and it takes GG a few games to realize.

Who are your fastest guys? Play them. Play them all.

So if Reaves runs Aho in G1 and is suspended the rest of the series for destroying him, who would it hurt more, us or Carolina?

Ergo?

:)

I've mentioned this before, IMO, Carolina is all smoke and mirrors.

They absolutely do not have the top end talent that some other teams in these playoffs have, even our Rangers.

What Carolina does better than most is buying into a system and identity. Rod has them conditioned and willing to push their forecheck.

They have one guy: Aho. Zibanejad is better.

Svechnikov and Teravainen aren't better than any of the Penguins we just faced. Panarin and Kreider are better.

Trocheck? He had a wildly overachieving breakout season of which he has never even been able to get close to again.

Our defense core is better. Fox is better than DeAngelo. Skjei and Smith? We couldn't wait to dump them.

Our goaltender is better. Raanta? He was a backup here.

IMO the Penguins core we just faced is better and deeper.

I'm having a hard time recalling a more overachieving team than this Carolina team. The Montreal Canadiens last year.

This will be a matchup of coaching. If Gallant has our guys pushing the pace and forcing Carolina to defend, then they can't do what makes them good which is forecheck. Stand them up at the blue lines. Hound the puck. Take their game right to them.

get the forwards to rotate back in the D zone for our breakouts. It appears that the D man with the puck behind the net is looking for some stretch pass to the neutral zone which is a horrendous approach.

All five forward need to get back to the D zone in motion to open up lanes.

It really IS AN EASY FIX

This group of forwards refuses to do that consistently.

It's flat out hilarious that anyone could actually think the Rangers were "handed" that series when 5 or 6 Toronto reviews went in the Pens favor.

PP Ops were 23-19 Pens.
5 on 3s were 3-1 Pens.

Comical.
Yeah, you would want some more explanation on that statement lol. These guys haven’t seen more than a game at most.

Anyone of a video of the OT winning goal yesterday with Sam announcing it? NHL.com only has the TNT broadcast.

They are really ignorant about who comes through their doors. They're also extremely ignorant about hockey fans in general. They truly believe that a fan who grew up with a certain team will change loyalties like they change underwear. That's why Ranger, Maple Leaf, Flyer, Penguin, Sabre, Blackhawk, and Red Wing jerseys are prevalent in that building. To a lesser extent, Canadien, Devil, and Islander jerseys too.

The overwhelming number of people wearing Rangers jerseys who go to the games there actually LIVE in the Carolinas, AND go to other games where they are either wearing Hurricanes jerseys or rooting for the Hurricanes. People have flocked down here over the last 30 years and have NOT changed their primary loyalty. It's similar to the Devils thinking that New Jersey was going to change overnight. It's been 40 years with the Devils, into a THIRD generation of potential fans, and they still aren't anywhere near a majority in their own area.

I would even go as far as saying there's a fair number of season ticket holders that are Ranger fans. I used to be one when I lived in the Raleigh area.
