Some choice excerpts from a recent article: Why Peter Laviolette Is a Good Fit as the Rangers' Next Head Coach

Basically, Gallant tried to make us dump and chase and we aren't built that way. The author thinks Laviolette will try and get the team to be more of a rush offense but it will be an uphill battle since our defenders, other than Fox, don't really play that way and we are so bad at exiting our defensive zone.

If the coach puts in a decent defensive plan that provides puck support and a breakout plan then that probably won't look so bad.
Lots of times the forwards didn't support the D worth a shit and the D get a ton of crap for "not being able to make a breakout pass" when the forwards are making it near impossible for them.

Brooks new article points out that one of the players' complaints about Gallant was that practices weren’t engaging enough. Definitely something I speculated about often last season so the validation is nice.

Also, boy am I glad he’s gone after hearing that.

I don’t know. I saw Mika djing at practices. How more engaging can it get?

Eh, could fail miserably, could work out. Uninspiring but will give it a shot.
That's my feeling. We could do way worse, but probably way better too.

This team needs a kick in the pants though and Laviolette will at least be good for that.

Laviolette isn't my first choice for Head Coach, but they could've gone a worse route (at least they didn't hire Quenneville) I would have rather they hired someone young with a track record of success; i.e. Patrick Roy. But we know Chris Drury is in self preservation mode and hockey, in general, is the most risk averse industry on the planet (no wonder they never get anywhere, but that's a story for another day).

They need someone who'll hold ALL players accountable and get rid of the country club culture. You want them to play hard, be a pain to play against. Have a system in place where you don't have to reply on Shesterkin to stand on his head to win games. This is mostly on Chris Drury, though Laviolette should have a say in who he needs to win. Stop chasing after stars; it's only worked once in almost 85 years. Be a T-E-A-M.

I find myself more frustrated with Gallant...I feel like he could be a really good coach if he just tweaked some things, but he also seems really stubborn about the way he coaches and won't entertain that idea.

then again I think there's probably a lot of coaches that would be really good if they just tweaked one or two things but they don't and that's why they aren't really good coaches

Not to be a duck but when I think of skilled puck handlers Alexis is not who I have in mind, lol. I’m not going to discredit the authors piece on that alone, but it does lead me to believe that he must be watching a different team than I am based on who he’s labeling as a skilled puck handler.

So as I’m processing this hire, Laviolette’s style and the current roster, I’m curious how he will see the current roster and what changes he will ask Drury to make. This is probably good news for Zack Jones and K’Andre Miller. Also need to find more bite upfront.

I think I said it 20 times now …

How you practice is how you will play.

We saw how we played.

There were worse options. Lavy is not terrible. I preferred Roy but I am ok with Lavy. Glad it wasnt Hynes. All the new blood out there would be a gamble no matter how much some like Knoblauch, Leach, etc., they would still be a gamble for a team that it is in its window and also went through the new blood trial with David Quinn.

Definitely not super exciting and have questions about it overall but I can also see some positives. He’s not my least preferred pick out of the rumored names, that’s for sure.

My biggest beef remains with Drury and his overall vision setting, decision making, and overall track record. But this isn’t the thread.

I 100% do believe the Rangers under GG were less than the sum of their parts. I do believe that they can play better 5 on 5 with better tactics and structure which is a huge weakness of GG. Does Lavi actually “get it”? Will be be able to get the vets to buy in? I’m skeptical but it’s possible. It wasn’t possible under GG.

I don't think it's about "favor the vets" or not. The kids played a ton of minutes 5v5 last year and they shouldn't be on the powerplay right now, sorry.

We need to get more out of the kids. We need to get more out of the vets. We don't get enough quality play out of the roster we have. That's the issue and it doesn't really break along age lines imo.

Maybe it's the roster. This is the the third coach this roster and front office will have and I think it will be telling.
some agree, some disagree
need more out of everybody, obv
in general too much deference to vets
play the entire kid line as a proven unit mo mins
Kreider + Zib + whoever works = 2nd line
bread to 3rd line

agree roster changes are needed
but we likely need a step backward to go a step forward

Jones should get a shot then
