Turk knows the effort and grit that is needed to succeed but what makes him stand out from all the other coaches who were grinders when they played, is that he had 30 goal seasons playing with Yzerman. He knows what skill players need to succeed in the league. They need ice time, reps, and the freedom to fail.

The freedom to fail? How many employers out there would say to their employees—‘Hey, don’t worry, it’s okay, you can f*** up all you want.’

I don't know how you go from looking like you're in the midst of taking a pretty massive leap (AND winning the 1 OA) to completely shitting the bed this year. I chalked the bubble sweep up to rust, but that same haze that hovered around this team during those 3 games was pretty much there for most of this season.

I still to this day have no idea what Quinn was trying to accomplish with this team systems wise. They looked like they were stuck between trying to do three things while being okay at 1 and abhorrent at the other 2.

Year 1 and even year 2, up to the covid stoppage, was decent. Everything fell apart after that though imo.

It was blatantly obvious there was a major disconnect. Last year was truly a mess

Nope, you clearly had no idea what you were talking about.

But its okay, neither did I!

I really don’t like how Drury said making playoffs next year wasn’t a mandate. It absolutely should be. Why were Gorton and JD fired?
Yeah, it’s a mandate whether or not Drury wants to say it publicly

you don’t blow up the entire organization to not make the playoffs

Gerard Gallant makes his Rangers mission crystal clear (nypost.com)

There is skill and there is talent, some of it exceptional. Tampa Bay long had exceptional skill and talent but did not win anything until the Lightning became a much harder team to play against. They did that by acquiring players with size, stiffness and sandpaper.

“It’s hard to watch these playoffs and not notice the physicality, the energy, the effort and the intensity it takes to win and succeed,” Drury said. “We’re certainly going to need to play that way to have success in the regular season and the playoffs.

“We’re always looking at ways to improve the lineup and add different pieces just like every team in the league, and every team in the league is watching these playoffs. We all want harder players to play against and we’re no different.”

“You give [young players] the opportunity and hopefully they take the opportunity and ice time they get and excel with it,” Gallant said. “I don’t think young players can sit on the fourth line and get a lot out of that.

“You’ve got to give them the opportunity to play. We know we’ve got some very talented young hockey players who are going to get every opportunity to play but they have got to fit into our program. They’ve got to make sure they’re playing every night and are deserving of ice time.

“It’s a fine line for coaches,” said the coach. “You want to develop players but you also want to win every night. That’s where we’re at right now so we’re going to try to win a hockey game and hope that those young players are going to be part of our team winning hockey games every night.”

Seems to me that the most expedient solution to the win-now versus play the kids conundrum is to simply mix the kids in with the veteran lines.

Kakko was excellent when put out late in the game to defend a lead as a defensive forward. Keep that coming. Maybe even give him some PK time.

Lafreniere should replace Strome on PP1

Make sure that we don't have a designated 'kid line' that gets shorted every time the bench gets shortened.

The freedom to fail? How many employers out there would say to their employees—‘Hey, don’t worry, it’s okay, you can f*** up all you want.’

Freedom to fail means that when a promising player makes mistakes, you coach him through them instead of throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

How many armchair coaches do you see with "get that idiot off the ice!" after a bad turnover. I mean Fleury made an egregious error that cost Vegas a game. You can either sit him for the rest of the post season, or you can trust the guy that brought you to the semis to get his stuff ironed out. That's freedom to fail.

Edited to add a story I was told by a business professor:

A very large government bid, approaching a million dollars, was on the table. The IBM Corporation—no, Thomas J. Watson Sr.—needed every deal. Unfortunately, the salesman failed. IBM lost the bid. That day, the sales rep showed up at Mr. Watson’s office. He sat down and rested an envelope with his resignation on the CEO’s desk. Without looking, Mr. Watson knew what it was. He was expecting it.

He asked, “What happened?”

The sales rep outlined every step of the deal. He highlighted where mistakes had been made and what he could have done differently. Finally he said, “Thank you, Mr. Watson, for giving me a chance to explain. I know we needed this deal. I know what it meant to us.” He rose to leave.

Tom Watson met him at the door, looked him in the eye and handed the envelope back to him saying, “Why would I accept this when I have just invested one million dollars in your education?”

Freedom to fail.

His ardent supporters don't even know or can't explain why he was 'good'. The excuses were endless

We've set the bar so low. Hopefully that's over

“I hate talking about the past but when I was in Vegas we went to training camp with a plan, put our systems in place and we expected everybody to play a 200-foot game with everybody good defensively and everybody good offensively,” the coach said. “Everybody has to have a role on your hockey team.

One of the things I like about Gallant is that he managed to get through the whole press conference without mentioning one player by name. He did the same things in Vegas and Florida. The team comes first.

One of the biggest grouses coming out of Vegas after he left was that the management broke up the team. When achieved, the camaraderie of the group can overcome talent shortcomings. Vegas developed a real identity as a bunch of misfits and the players loved it. Similarly, the Canadian team at the Worlds bonded in a relatively short time and achieved great success.

With the talent at his disposal, if Gallant can pull off the same team building magic in New York, we could have something real special here.

Including Brett Howden. He works hard, and he earns the coach's trust.

If he just played his role, that'd be fine.

I still think Howden will be a good/great bottom6 hockey player. It's all determined on when he finally matures physically. Normally you're on the way, already at 23 but he's a 'late bloomer'. I know it may look bad now but it's there.
