I'll concede the Trottier one. That was probably them trying to get a New York sports legend and a guy coming off a Cup as an assistant.

That's about the only thing I could think of myself.

It didn't make sense to me at the time. I knew Low wasn't good, but why not try to bring in someone with more experience.

Then I got to watch my idol unsuccessfully coach the Coyotes and that was the greatest indicator that a playing career doesn't necessarily translate to a coaching career.

Howden is just the type of fellow that might actually become a decent NHL player on a cheap deal for us under Gallant . That is what we have to hope for from him....help some guys raise the intensity levels /compete levels . Sink or swim for some guys now in NY .

what role do you envision for a the finesse Howden who netted an empty net goal?

I agree. I've said that Laf could be an 85-100 point player at his peak, depending on the talent surrounding him. If the skating improves, which I think it will, he's an elite level player. The skill, the smarts, the hands, the shooting, the physical play, it's all there. The consistency is obviously paramount. Kakko has seemed to found consistency in terms of his effort, but the offense was lacking this year. He just wasn't converting on chances. I think part of that is his shot needs to improve, but I also think he needed more chances with better players. I know you said before the TOI issue pissed you off, well I'm right there with you.

If I'm Kakko, I follow around Raatanen all summer and just carbon copy what he has done.

He's 100% spending the summer in Finland?

I think the best person for him to glue himself to is Laf all summer.

I would never disagree with hanging with LaF, because that dude seems to just get it.

But, Raatanen's progression, especially with shooting is exactly the improvements Kakko needs.

I think wherever he ends up this summer will be great for him. And Gallant is such a huge get, can't wait for training camp which feels like it's six years away.

It's all about confidence and aggression with KK.

He is already a monster on the puck and defensively sound.

Quinn held him back big-time.

laf should glue himself to the crosby/mackinnon workouts for the summer and skate with their group - marchand part of that as well among others. kakko being there or shadowing rantanen is 6 of 1 half dozen of the other as far as i'm concerned

Leafs fan coming in peace. I think this is a SOLID move for you guys. After that Wilson BS I thought that your team's response the next game was fantastic. This is how a team comes together. With Gallant at the helm I think Rangers are going to reach new heights
Yeah, everyone liked that except people on here somehow :dunno:

Just get me my two centers

krejci or danault

and cizikas

I’ll overpay for both too

those are the two big moves needed. Strome and Howden gone

Gallant is the Paul Stastny of coaching hires.

Remember years ago when Paul Stastny was the biggest prize in free agency? Not a bad player by any means but hardly something to get overly excited about.

That's how I feel about Gallant. He's a good coach, but I feel there were better candidates available in other years. Unfortunate timing for the Rangers.

That said, I think Gallant will do better than Quinn and if we're lucky, he squeezes the most out of this team and gets us far into the play offs.

Dude Gallant took the VGK team all the way to the cup finals in their first year; and team was basically made up off the players who got rejected by their teams (i.e. not protected).

well, we don’t protect anybody so this may work

Krejci, Cizikas, Goodrow. Boyle as a 13th. Trade Strome/Buch/Chytil. Bring back Hertl.

Lafreniere-Zib-Kakko
Panarin-Hertl-Kravtsov
Kreider-Krejci-Gauthier
Goodrow-Cizikas-Blackwell
Barron/Boyle

At that point Boyle is likely not even brought in and Barron ends up being the odd man out. There should be no reason to rush Barron though. And we arent sure what happens with Gauthier, but that would be some size on the 3rd line wings.

the quinn blame for him not being a stud day 1 is absurd. i agree with you 1000% its about confidence and aggression for him - but it wasn't coaching. he improved dramatically under quinn. he was given opportunities when he was playing well and shielded, not punished, when he struggled.

for one - not every top pick is a crosby or matthews etc day 1 - fans expectations there are ridiculous. take a look at the last few top 5's - guys like zadina, evan bouchard, dach, hughes, turcotte, patrick, hischier, glass, puljujarvi, etc - lots of guys with big expectations that haven't broken out yet. some never will. are they all a coach away from stardom? these kids are 18-21 years old, this is the nhl. look at barkovs first few years, a huberdeau, hell a mika. it takes more time for some.

you're right he's a monster on the puck, he's becoming incredible at taking pucks away, his hands in tight are special, his feel on the wall is elite...i love his game. but keep in mind, as you mentioned with the confidence and aggression - he was 18 years old from thousands of miles away stepping into an nhl locker room with some established players. what always stood out more than his production was who he was on his finnish teams. at both the u18's and u20s he willed wins. i'm very confident he will break out, hopefully with a big step this year, but when it happens will not be the result of who the coach is.
