Couldn't agree more with that. Mika being demoted was long over due. The Howden experiment needed to end. Blackwell is not good at all defensively, but somehow got power play time over players like Lafreniere and Kakko. One of my biggest criticisms of Quinn was the fact that he never practiced what he preached when he claimed to want a meritocracy. The showings against Carolina in the play in series and against the better teams this past season, especially the Islanders down the stretch were just pathetic. The veterans have to be better and that's why I'm wary of giving Zibanejad that next big deal. He always seems to come up short in big games.

Two guys that are very underrated that play in South Florida.

It's kind of weird because while everyone talks about generational talents and so forth, I feel like we're money if Laf and Kakko more or less become our version of those two. We'll have the players to surround them with.

I like this move the most cause it's the most un-Rangers move in a long time. The Rangers have made a habit of hiring the guys in their circle for 20 years now. Rarely stepping out into the open to take a real chance.

It's always been guys they knew previously. Guys that were here before. People who had worked with or coached with someone in the front office earlier.

While it may seem on the surface this is the obvious choice, cause it is, the Rangers rarely make that obvious choice.(As the hockey media and fanbase sees it) They usually just hire another New England/New York area guy.

As they say, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Lets hope we gain something good.

Really? I feel like this is a prototypical Rangers move.

I agree. I've said that Laf could be an 85-100 point player at his peak, depending on the talent surrounding him. If the skating improves, which I think it will, he's an elite level player. The skill, the smarts, the hands, the shooting, the physical play, it's all there. The consistency is obviously paramount. Kakko has seemed to found consistency in terms of his effort, but the offense was lacking this year. He just wasn't converting on chances. I think part of that is his shot needs to improve, but I also think he needed more chances with better players. I know you said before the TOI issue pissed you off, well I'm right there with you.

Really? Haha

How do you think? I am interested to hear your thoughts. I feel like the Rangers over the years have made a habit of hiring guys in their sphere a little too often. Lowe, Muckler, Trottier, Tortarella and Quinn. The only hires that could have been deemed taking a risk on a guy outside their little world would be Renney and AV. And Renney was the Director of Player Personnel so even then he wasn't that much of a reach cause he was in the org already.

Interestingly enough, both Renney and AV coached the Canucks right before coaching the Rangers and Tortarella coached them right after. Crazy world.

Muckler/Lowe/Quinn were all connection based. Renney wasn't a connection, he was the only man who would take the job after Sather himself didn't want it.

I'm with you.

Gallant had no pre-existing ties to the organization that I know of.

Low was in Edmonton while Sather was there. Muckler another one, obvious connection to Sather. Trottier, not sure if there was any connection there, Tortarella had been with the Rangers previously as an interim and Quinn was friends with Drury from Drury's BU days.

Like you said, I think Kakko's offense will come with better players, time, and more special team time.

One thing that people don't always take into account in today's NHL is just how much of a boost powerplay time provides to numbers. You get those kids some consistent time, including time with the man advantage, and they're going to be jumping into that 50-60 point range very quickly.

With Kakko, I also think we're potentially looking at a guy who becomes a top-5 Selke candidate for the next decade.

maybe this is where Mike Kelly comes in?

Potentially, sure, though I wouldn't pretend to be an expert on that. Personally I believe the best leaders set the tone and mission for their organization. They also delegate where necessary. Seems like Gallant does both of those things extremely well, with the output being fun, winning hockey - which makes me a fan of this hire. I'm very optimistic.

Honestly, while I would like to get our feet wet in a serious playoff series where we win a couple of games (not that Carolina joke), I still think it's summer of '23 before you can say with a straight face "I think the Rangers take the Cup this year."
"I think the Rangers can win a round this year" is WAY more reasonably and likely to say during Summer '23 if all goes well. *Anything goes* once you go into the playoffs, of course, because there wasn't a straight face during the last offseason saying the Canadiens can take the cup, but Rangers are so so far off from being contenders. It takes a very long time.
