I love how Uncle Larry talks about how detail-oriented John Hynes is. He or anyone can extol his virtues to the sky. Doesn't change the fact that he's had a lackluster NHL head coaching career. 8 seasons, no playoff wins. He wouldn't be the first well-prepared coach to falter in the pros and he won't be the last. But you want to talk about searching for a silver lining in a sky full of haze...how apropos.

You’re not wrong but Hynes hasn’t exactly coached cup contending rosters. I’m willing to give him a shot

Please tell me the 3 things you like best about Leachs offensive system. Yes I know he has been primarily a defensive assistant but we can't hire a guy not knowing about how he will run our offense as well. So what can we expect on offense?
You need to defend. You aren’t winning in the NHL without defending.

I am assuming the team will be aggressive on the forecheck. D will pinch. Seattle played that way. Sullivan's teams play that way. Protect the house on defense.

Having the forwards play defense and back track is essential.

People were saying the same things about Kakko that they were about Buch at the same age. I don’t even dislike Buch it’s just that he’s apparently the measuring stick here (career high 48 points in NY btw). I wouldnt have given up on him at 21 so why are we acting like Kakko is a finished product at 21? Also who cares about where Kakko would go in a redraft or what draft “experts” said about him? He was the consensus pick at 2. The guy is going to be a really good player if they plug him next to Kreider & Mika like Gallant should’ve all season. If he improves by 10 points next year we’ll be paying him 5.5-6m. That was my original point
You have to take the bolded into account that that was the Covid year. Those 48 points were in 54 games, so he was close to a ppg that year. Nobody should be complaining about kakko, sure he hasn’t shown what we wanted (a ppg player out or the gate) but he’s only getting better. It’s a shame that would could’ve had both in the top 6 if drury actually tried to negotiate with buch before determining he would trade him. Also even if we signed buch to 1-2 years we wouldn’t have had to replace him with copp, which we gave up more for than we got in the Buch trade. If anything we could’ve added copp to Buch and not have to give up assets to move nemeth and possible goodrow as well.

I 100% agree we have to defend but do you think assuming what an offense will be is enough? Shouldn't we know before hiring? What if the assumption is wrong?

Let's all keep in mind that Hynes will be coaching his best roster on paper here. Like, go look at the Nashville and NJ teams he's coached, they were awful.

Josi and Taylor Hall both had career offensive years playing for Hynes.

I think if you go and get a good Xs and Os offensive AC, Hynes won't be worse than any of the other options, including Gallant.

People want the best shot at the cup possible this upcoming season which is understandable and, in my opinion, likely warranted because another disappointing playoffs means likely blowing up the core.

So most folks want a coach that they think gives us the best chance to win it all. There's no real confident cup-bringing resume among the coaches (Lavi was a long time ago now), so people are upset.

Everyone wants 2022-2023 to be like the season where NYR didn't even make the playoffs and yet won next year. 30 year anniversary would be pretty appropriate, esp since we made the finals in 2013-2014 as well. Keenan was the coach for just one year, seen as a motivator. Folks here don't see a Keenan flash in the pan in the bunch.

We've officially started the hopium stage

And if some believe that this core can still be a championship team, then we are in good shape.
It can be if the kids step up and take the leap they were supposed to take. If a new cowch glcan get them to the next level than we are in good shape.

If the kids dont progress, well then its time for the big rebuild again.

Unpopular opinion, but I think that if a coach slapped an 'A' on Kakko, sat him down and told him that he was accountable for how the team performed and was going to get minutes to match that, he'd be our best player in the playoffs by a significant margin.
