Why the reluctance to hire someone fresh? All of the experienced and retread options suck. Drury keeps looking at the same names on the paper. If Drury was planning to hire Laviolette, he could have done it 3 weeks ago.

Go hire Jay Leach. He may not have NHL head coaching experience but he is more qualified to be a head coach than Mike Sullivan and Bruce Cassidy were in their first jobs. Sullivan did a good job in Boston. He should have received his 2nd opportunity sooner than he did. Cassidy took over an impossible team put together by the Caps ownership.

Leach has been an assistant coach in the NHL the last two seasons. He has been a head coach in the AHL. He has worked with Cassidy when they were both in the Bruins organization. Leach was an assistant coach in the AHL with Sullivan.

Hire Kris Knoblauch to run the forwards and PP. Ryan Huska is a candidate for the Flames job. If Huska doesn’t get the job, he could look to move to another organization. He could run the Rangers D and PK.

Maybe Kevin Dean would be a better option. Leach was hired by the Bruins to be Dean's assistant coach in Providence. Leach became head coach in Providence when Dean joined Cassidy's staff in Boston. Dean was on Cassidy's staff in Providence. Dean is currently an assistant coach in Chicago. Ask the Hawks for permission to talk to him about joining Leach in New York.

Dean runs the D and PK. I remember him. He played for the Devils before they became good.

Leach, Knoblauch and Huska/Dean all have experience in the NHL as assistant coaches and all of them have been head coaches in the AHL. These guys aren’t deaf, blind and dumb. The Rangers have a good team. These guys won't make the Rangers a better coached team?

St. Louis looks to be a capable NHL head coach with zero experience. Caufield was lost until Marty took over. The Habs gave Caufield nearly $8M AAV a few days ago. Marty had a big role in getting Caufield going. It would be nice if the Rangers had someone like that for Lafreniere and Kakko.

I don't agree it was inevitable. Otherwise we would have gotten a center in exchange. Like if we got Robert Thomas in exchange then your point could make sense. This was a cap move. The fear was that Buch's cap would one day block us from resigning Kakko, Chytil, Laf, and Miller. And maybe a misguided belief that Kakko and Kravtsov were gonna step up to fill that void. As long as you sign Buch to contract sans NTC, we would have been able to delay trading him down the road.

We got a partial rental of Tarasenko, Sammy Blais remorse, and a partial rental of Copp. I'd been much happier not trading for Copp, Tarasenko, and Kane. which Buch's cap might have made impossible to do. and for the better! Imagine if we were forced to trade him this summer for cap reason, I'd love our hypothetical return this year a lot more than what we ended up getting for him.
Hard to imagine doing any worse than Drury did in moving Buch.

I think you do more research than Drury does.

Does Laviolette have money left on his contract owed to him? Is the issue and wait more about what percentage the Rangers are going to pay as opposed to the actual selection?

Why the reluctance to hire someone fresh?

Simple: the players were unhappy with DQ...result: fired. The players were unhappy with GG...result: fired.

Not that I don't think that GG should have been fired, because I do.

But, it makes you wonder if the inmates are running the asylum.

Bringing in a "never coached in the NHL before" head coach might be like feeding a newbie to the lions.

Drury might feel that an experienced hand, one with a no nonsense reputation, might be required.

From everything we think we know, this does not seem like the easiest group to coach.

What is worse right now?

The Rangers coaching search, or the air quality outside of MSG right now?

Which is why Drury should have been doing everything he can to trade those inmates. Panarin..I mean those inmates are the cancer of the team.

"The inmates are running the asylum."

You're the f***ing coach. If you can't establish basic expectations and enforce them, you're not a good coach. It has nothing to do with new or old.

Quinn treated Panarin like he was worshipping Christ at the alter. He picked his linemates and played 20 minutes a night. There's no reason a fresh coach couldn't come in and actually have basic discipline.

The only thing I can think of is they’re hesitant to hire a new face because of how Quinn turned out AND they’re in win now mode and want someone who’s established and don’t want to chance it and waste more years.

I don't think Leach and Quinn are really comparable when looking at their pro coaching experience up until Quinn was hired here. Quinn had two bad years in Lake Erie and one decent one where they lost in round 1 of the playoffs. Leach led Providence to 4 straight years of being a top-10 team that always had guys ready to step in and fill roles for Cassidy.

In Seattle, you can see how their dmen have grown in their games under him, especially Vince Dunn, and the entire team was good defensively both at 5v5 and on the PK; goaltending was the issue there.

Quinn was great in college because of how good he is at recruiting and building personal relationships. He definitely has a really good eye for talent, but he wasn't able to translate his message here and get the team to buy into what he wanted. He had them rolling right before the league shut down, but then did a terrible job preparing them for the bubble and managing them after that. I'd expect his next stint as HC to be better than what happened here and what happens eventually in SJ.

All the guys you mentioned and Roy. All intriguing options. All better than what we will probably end up with.

What you mention about Quinn is why I think Roy would be a good HC in the NHL now. First stint had initial success but then got humbled really quick the next 2 seasons. Went back to QMJHL and win another Memorial Cup. Must have learned from mistakes and grown. In his next stint as NHL HC if he should chose to go that route, I think he'd be good. I think he'd be good for Lafreniere.

Are they hesitant to hire a retread because of how Gallant turned out, though? It's not like either approach has really worked.

I'm 100% Camp the front office is just trolling us and laughing hard at our desperation and bad takes, whilst reading the board.

I actually hope Drury continues to troll this board and not name a coach until right before the draft.

LOL - re: Rangers trolling - it does seem like that!

Seriously though, it seems like Dolan and Sather are not concerned nor have a finger on the pulse of this fan base. If the Rangers were to hire someone like Knoblauch or Leach (or if available Carbury), most fans would embrace the hire. Dolan almost has disdain for Rangers and Knicks fans.

Unless you are celebrity fortunate enough to sit in the Delta Club, Dolan and Sather have no time for connecting with their fanbase.

I really get the feeling lavy is the guy for nyr but he's trying to wait to see what happens w Keefe.

Lavy was just on cam and strick. Decent listen. He's not my top choice but he made a comment when asked about the coaching interviews that he didn't want to say anything and then put something out there that hasn't gotten out there yet.

Think the hynes stuff and everything else is pushing him to sign. Will be interesting to see if he drags this out too long and someone else gets the job.

Dubas already said he was staying

Almost every other GM would have done due dillegence on the hip injury and passed on him. A simple check up would have shown him to be injured.
I'm quite sure Drury knew about the hip injury, since EVERYONE did. THAT is why he came so cheaply...
