EF saying he’s most interested in the Rangers HC gig is basically an admittance he has no clue what Drury is thinking. It might be Lavy but if this drags out to Friday they will move on to the next speculated candidate. Guessing the hacks will be speculating Roy if none named by Friday. It’s literally their job to gossip every single day regardless of what they actually know.

TLDR don’t waste mental energy getting worked up over Hynes.

Gonna start pretending to be a Twitter “insider”. This team and league are just too predictable.

If we're hiring Roy for HC, i want a real good X's and O's guy to help run the offense.

Admittedly i want that anyway but still

When can the Rangers talk to Roy? When would the earliest they can legally interview him if they choose to do so, one of Drury’s former teammates. Rather have him than Hynes.

His first year he won the Jack Adams, Colorado won 52 games, 112 points (2nd overall in the NHL), MacKinnon won the Calder, the top 4 scorers on the team were 23 years old and younger, Varlamov was 25 and won 41 games... I wouldn't call that a disaster.

The next two seasons didn't go as well.

yea i know the first year went well, but i think it's pretty common knowledge the next 2 were abject disasters and it wasn't just on the ice. like i said of the options right now he'd be my preferred choice, it's not to pile on him. just putting thoughts together on the good and bad, especially because when a coach isn't coming directly from being fired from another nhl team people tend to think there's only sunshine and rainbows with them.

like i mentioned, roy has some really good qualities that might really be a good fit for this team's needs. but it's not unfair to make note of some concerning parts of his history. like after that very good first regular season his team got dumped in the first round by a big underdog, and took significant steps backwards the following two seasons. even in his first year his team basically got caved in for what analytics are worth, and that was consistent all 3 years.

of the most critical needs for the next coach to instill and demand, structure defensively that generates a coordinated transition/breakout offense....that's probably the biggest question to be answered. he's a boom/bust hire. either he learned some things and is bringing in a better system / assistants who are elite there...or it would be a spectacular demolition of a team that had the potential to be special.

If I had to choose between Laviolette and Roy it would be Roy for me.

In addition to a more structured, detailed system this team needs some fire and passion in a leader and Roy delivers both.

Definitely a riskier, more volatile option than the boring, safe pick in Lavy, but one that could pay off given the group that’s in this room.

Not a fan of Roy. A little too much Donald Duck temper in him. However, if he is involved in all aspects of the organization like training, development I could warm up to the idea.

Basically I'd love for Roy to come in, take one look at Ciaccao, go "who the eff is this guy?" and chase him out the facility.
If Roy is Donald Duck, Gallant was:

The Rangers should put Knoblauch on the coaching staff. Larry Brooks reported on a recent NY Post podcast that Knoblauch interviewed in Jersey for the job which went to Ruff and the for Buffalo job which went to Granato. He did a good job coaching the Rangers during Covid. Give Knoblauch a nice increase in salary. He knows all of the Rangers young players and the Rangers will need those young guys to fill roster spots. Knoblauch runs the PP and forwards. The Rangers need all of the brain power they can muster in New York.

I came on to suggest a name change to the thread but I see I am very late to the party.
Who was the coach?

After reading all these posts I have come to the conclusion that most people on this board will not be happy with any hiring we make. Get the feeling that most here would have problems hiring Toe Blake, Bowman or Arbour in their prime.

I can’t see Drury going with an unknown right now. I would prefer Leach, with Hynes or Roy behind him. Don’t want Laviolette, Babcock, or Quenneville.

It’s a risky move hiring a guy like Leach. It’s easy for us as fans to want him and if it doesn’t work out we just move on. Drury will have to explain that to ownership and his job may be on the line if this hire fails. If I were in his position, I would be really hesitant to hire a guy with only a couple seasons on an NHL bench.

Taking risks is what leads to championships. Someone will eventually give Leach that shot.

That being said, Hynes has 9 years of coaching experience, has a rapport with Drury which means, from a managerial perspective, they will likely collaborate and be on the same page with style, personnel decisions, and identity. That’s really important. I think there’s a chemistry value, front office wise, that would be extremely positive with Hynes.

Not trying to sell Hynes, just trying to understand the reason they’re looking hard at him. He’s not a carousel coach as he’s only like 48, has had 2 stops where he’s lasted 4+ years. Maybe this would be the right group for him to find success.

People are acting like there’s a magic answer to this, either a guy with prior success or a guy with no experience. There isn’t one. Joel quenneville is the 2nd winningest coach of all time. Before he won a Cup he had 2 stops with St. Louis and Colorado where he couldn’t get it done. 7 straight years of playoff exits with STL. The truth is, you really don’t know.

Coaches also can develop and grow. They learn just like players do. Hynes may be that type of guy. Put Knoblauch on the NHL bench with him, groom him. Fire Murphy and hire a more veteran presence.

What is the book on Hynes’ Xs and Os? Is he a + or a - there?

Leach with knoblauch and Hynes as assistants is probably best case IMO. A young staff that is familiar with one another already and all have different strengths.

Along with the unknown with Roy, he absolutely would not stand for Panarin’s shit so he has that going for him. Like @Synergy27 said, it may be the hire needed to drive him out of town and that alone may be worth it.

I wonder if a bench team of:

Roy, Boudreau, Knoblauch would work...
They would be excellent riding the pine !!! Boudreau scored a lousy 28 NHL goals his entire career , hell Roy never scored a goal, and Knobby never played a game. Warning though Roy will get really pissed and probably quit if he gets benched.
