i'm definitely more intrigued by the idea of roy, much moreso than laviolette and hynes. that said, a big part of the draw is the natural appeal of coming from the outside and no very recent association with failure. however, his tenure in col was a complete disaster.

he's not going to come in intimidated by anything, and this team could use someone who will light them up at times - and his resume commands respect, at least initially. he's had a lot of success in juniors and you'd like to think it would benefit young players like laf and kakko. plus, we'd have someone on the team with some swagger, and maybe that would draw more of it out of a few players. there's def things to like.

on the other side...i have no idea how he is with x's and o's, but his first stint doesn't give any reason to consider it a positive. people grow and i don't know enough about his time in col or quebec to comment on style or structure, but it's a concern. there's also the fact that great players tend to have a hard time communicating to teams, because so few see the game the way they did, so that's a concern. obviously the volatile personality in nyc could implode spectacularly as easily, if not more easily, as the passion and confidence are to work as a positive.

there's a lot of boxes checked with him, good and bad, but for me he checks more good and potential good boxes than retreads like hynes and laviolette. he's got more downside too, but fk it, scared money don't make money.

Good new for the team is that a few of them might learn how to stick handle with Roy as the coach

I'm pretty sure 99% of the current Rangers roster already believes stickhandling past the red line is a penalty.

The day is not over yet.
Candidates*

He hasn't coached at the NHL level in 7 years. I'm sure he's learned a lot since then. It's good he has some experience at the NHL level too so it wouldn't all be brand new for him.

Hard to say that he "blew" in his first NHL stint when he won coach of the year his first season..

Regardless, it doesn't even matter. Drury is Mr Safe, he's not going outside the box. He will hire vanilla Lav or his boy Hynes and call it a day.

Sheerly luck driven. This was one the analytics nailed, nothing about that Avs team was even remotely sustainable.

Look at how drastically the Avs fell off after that. Legit threw a young and promising group into a second rebuild.

Until he gets shiv’d

Lavi is the eldest boy.

If Roy has a system it sure as hell didn’t get results at the NHL level. Winning in a league of teenagers who don’t play defense isn’t exactly impressive to me.
Why is it inconceivable that he went to coach a Junior team and tweaked his coaching style to fit a more modern version of the game? Good coaches can grow and evolve over the years.

Resulted in a Jack Adams trophy. Thats pretty good I guess?

Heavily Varlamov…he was 2nd in Vezina voting and had the season of his career. That’s like calling Gallant a master of his craft after last year.

It’s possible but I’m personally not taking performance in the Q as evidence of an understanding the game at the NHL level given his poor performance…coaching at the NHL level.

I guess devils advocate on that- you brought up GG and Igor's unreal season last year...GG didn't win the Jack Adams because it takes more than a goaltender?

Just sayin', Roy coached 3 seasons in the NHL, had only 1 bad season and left the NHL on his own accord(he was not fired). He's been coaching in Juniors but I don't understand how anyone could be so sure he would not be a fantastic coach now that he has much more coaching experience under his belt? He was not some terrible NHL coach in the first place, and now has had success outside of the NHL.

Not saying its a lock, but surely it's reasonable to be hopeful that he could be successful?

His first year he won the Jack Adams, Colorado won 52 games, 112 points (2nd overall in the NHL), MacKinnon won the Calder, the top 4 scorers on the team were 23 years old and younger, Varlamov was 25 and won 41 games... I wouldn't call that a disaster.

The next two seasons didn't go as well.

Roy is a guy who absolutely cannot stand losing. It drives him literally mad.

He forced his way out of Montreal over one bad loss. He lost his shit playing for colorado, famous clip of him skating the puck up the ice in the post above. Lost it many times on the colorado bench. This man hates losing with his entire soul.

This team has many players who could use a shot of that flowing through them.

We all saw it. No compete in big games. Disgusted so many of us.

Maybe Roys passion is his downfall, and maybe this team never wins a cup with him as coach. I dont know. But Id rather watch a team tear itself apart to the last whistle trying to win a game over the shameful disgrace we saw in games 4,5&7 against NJ. Any day of the f***ing week.

did you see the chicken shit flavored ice cream alternative?

I'd prefer to speak Leach into existence.

omg... Leach... Messier as an assistant. Leetch and Messier. 2024... 1994.. it's a sign. 30 years. Henrik Lundqvist as the other assistant!! He finally gets his ring!
Wow Igor's old backup becoming his assistant coach?
