Laviolette isn't the problem in NY. Besides you don't fire a coach who just took this team to a presidents trophy last year.

Laviolette has mismanaged this situation just as much as Drury has. The situation itself might not be his fault, but the way he’s handled it has only exacerbated the problems. Maybe no coach could’ve done better, but he’s the guy there. He’s lost the team completely and I don’t believe it’s possible for a coach to get a team back once that happens. He has to go.

I’ve said before that this collapse has been a group effort. Drury, Laviolette, and the veteran leadership group coming into the season all bear the blame, with varying shares for individual players. Trouba, Zibanejad, Kreider, Fox, Panarin, Trocheck in that order. The only guys I don’t blame are the younger players caught up in the whirlwind of this and veteran newcomers like Smith and Carrick. Saying that Laviolette needs to be fired doesn’t absolve Drury or those veterans, but that doesn’t change anything about his role in it either.

After relying on mostly the same lines all last year and the beginning of this year, Lavi also rejiggered all the lines because the top 6 weren't scoring much 5v5. But they were on a winning streak at the time and the 3rd line looked great (so yea let's trade Kakko for nothing 2 months later, that makes sense).

They sort of never recovered from there and started taking a nose dive.

This kind of tinkering never made sense to me. If the top 6 isn't scoring but you are winning games... that probably means the top 6 is still doing good work. They aren't getting caved in and they are taking that opportunity away from the opposition's top guys which allows for your other guys to score on lesser competition. If the other team keys in on your third line more then... your top guys get more chances to finish.

Looking at lines in isolation when winning or losing is dumb when it's a team game and there's a whole other team out there.

The problem is that they tuned out David Quinn and he was fired in May 2021. They fired Gerard Gallant less than 2 full years later, despite an ECF appearance, in April 2023. Now we’re talking about firing Laviolette, despite an ECF appearance, in December 2024. How many coaches does this group of players get to say “Nah, we know better” to?

I do agree this group has tuned out one too many coaches now. You can't continue trying to turn this roster into anything more than a team that feasts on the PP and otherwise needs to play uneventful hockey to win.

The types of defensive mistakes they're making now though just shows that they're unengaged with the game for whatever reason. Maybe the loss of Goodrow and Trouba has allowed the outside noise filter into their locker room but were better able to tune it out previously.

Lavi may have lost the room, but he lost it worse than the last two coaches somehow. It's actually wild.

Agreed. I'll take team wins every time rather than focusing on any individual's production. Even though they struggled 5v5 each year, they at least found a formula to get it done most of the time.
