Confirmed with Link: Rangers extend McDonagh (6 years, $28.2M, $4.7M AAV)

flyers got 3 years of giroux at 3.75 but now the are paying him 8.275 million a year. i would rather the rangers overpay stepan 3-5 million now and lock him up long term than sign him to a bridge deal and be stuck potentially in 2 or 3 years.

So would I. But the decision to not buy out Richards makes that very difficult.

well they can go over the cap for the summer. if they can move around some of the dead cap space being spent on they 5 4th liners. i think they can figure a way to make it possible

i would have preferred a bridge contract for mac truck since we will be tight up against the cap this year and the cap will be going up a lot in the next few seasons, but eating 3 years UFA and the cap hit being what it is, you cant complain much

Just don't know what to get yet. I have:

Staal - home
Richards - third jersey
Nash - away
Kreider - home

I'm thinking away.
Do Heritage. It's a beaut

Still in the process of getting ugly ass nameplate fixed </3 :'(

if they sign stepan at 4.5, hags at 2.3, and zucc at 1.3 that puts us roughly 1.6 million over the cap. if powe and asham get moved, that solves that problem right?

I expect stepan at a 4-5 year deal with an AAV at 3.75

I see Hagelin at a 2-3 year deal with AAV of $2.25-2.5 range

It might work (though Step definitely won't get 4 years).

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $64,256,667; BONUSES: $762,500
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $805,833

Most of our remaining cap space is due to the bonus cushion. If we can trade Powe and Asham, that will save us another 217k. The majority of the bonuses are from Kreider. If he earns them, then maybe we don't mind if some of that money rolls over into next year.

If Zucc isn't re-signed and we put a kid in that spot, we'll have a little bit more to work with. Miller's cap hit is almost the same, but 525k of it is bonus that he may not earn.

I guess it's still possible that Step gets a long term deal. I hope he does. But it will be tight.

Need to leave enough space for injury replacements and deadline deals. At least 500k. Those calculations also include using the bonus cushion. If those bonuses aren't likely to be earned, then it isn't a big deal. Even if some of the bonuses do roll over into the following year, it shouldn't be a big problem unless we can't buy out Richards.

Stepan's 2nd contract if its a bridge contract should be a 2 year contract under $3M. Couture. 2 years. $2.875M. Giving Stepan more than that in 2 years is foolish. Even $3.75M per for 3 so he one year away from group III makes no sense. Just give him the $4M over 5. Boyle on the 4th line with a $1.7M cap hit is a luxury. Moore at $1M can more than replace Boyle who is not Guy Carbonneau. They don't need Pyatt at $1.55M either.

OOOOOOHHHHH That's a bingo!

Good terms. Leaves room for a nice deal if he grows an offensive side to his game.

Yup, if they give him the 2.9 mil over first two years or 3.3ish over 3, you can easily afford one or two years of UFA for a 5-6 year contract barely raising the cap hit. His first two years averaged will have him making under 3 and even if he makes 5.5 his UFA years, the cap hit should be 4-4.2.

It would be quite ludicrous not to give Stepan a long term deal, too. We don't need the extra 1 mil of space the next 3-4 years so drastically. Better to trim fat on the roster elsewhere to give him that long term deal now and save big bucks down the road.

Can someone please explain what people are referring to when they are saying McD has 3 years of UFA status with this contract, or what being a group III means?

Love the length and price of this contract though, the kid deserves every penny of it, love watching him play.

I'm in love with that deal. Great to know we've locked him up long term at such a reasonable price!
