Stepan is 4 years away from group III. Mac was 3. Hagelin is 3 years away. Stepan is getting more than 4 years if its a long term deal. 5 years for $20M.

That seems a bit much for Stepan. He had one good half season and two underwhelming playoffs. You can bet Sather will use those playoffs against him in negotiations - plus McDonagh was arbitration eligible, Stepan wasn't.

Agreed on the not 4 years deal though. It'll be 3, 5 or more. Keep him an RFA or RFA+UFA years. No way he lets him sign a deal taking him straight to UFA. My guess is he also signs for 6 years, with a cap hit of about 3.8-4.2.

McDonagh's contract, my guess looks like 3.6, 3.8, 4, 5.4, 5.6, 5.8. Cap hit of 4.7. Since Stepan has one non arbitration eligible year instead of one UFA year for a 6 year deal, even if they got the same sums for most of the years, you'd have something like 2.8, 3.6, 3.8, 4, 5.4, 5.6 leaving a cap hit of 4.2 for 6 years. My guess is he likely doesn't receive the same amounts as McDonagh and has a cap hit of 3.9 for 6 years. That, or if you take the first 3 years and he signs for 3 years, maybe a cap hit of 3.1-3.4. I think it's the wiser decision to go more long term considering UFA years will only get more and more expensive in the future. Buy low now when the cap is low and 5 years from now, you'll be wondering how the hell he has a cap hit below 4 mil.

Extremely happy with the terms, and more importantly that Mac will be here longterm. The guy is a flat out special player, and the best skating defenseman on the Rangers since Brain Leetch.

Since he only played 2 NHL games his first year, his AHL year doesn't count. It slides because he wasn't 20 yet and he could play there because he was drafted from the USHL.

Miller would have been in the same spot this year if he didn't play so many NHL games.

They are working on an extension with him. This deal has no effect on Hank. Anyway, Henrik is already making 7M/year, so it's not like he's going to get much of a raise. But the point is, any raise doesn't effect our cap until next season, when we'll have quite a bit of space due to the Richards buyout.
