This is the explanation I'm going with. The coach told him if he wasn’t going to pass the puck to Kakko to stay in the locker room.
So he did.

Kakko and Laffy just need better linemates and more opportunity
It will take time for confidence to get back
ESPN kicking themselves for not getting this hunk on their broadcastsHank doing the intermission for the Ducks and Seattle game on TNT, he is killing it.
But they started looking bad way early in that run of games.
Yeah but the schedule all month has been heavy with 9 games in 15days plus they are going through the normal regression in play and the injuries. No shesterkin for 7 games now, no Lundkvist for 4. Rough stretch.
Agreed I can't use injuries as an excuse. Sucks losing Igor but other teams have lost entire top lines like Washington and Pitt. We've had very few injuries all season.

(I'll get my coat)
I'd have asked something like How could Philip Chytil possibly make this game any worse?GG getting testy with the Chytil questions.
this performance and playoff in the same sentence is *generous*Doesn't feel nearly as good as when we were playing well. The team I saw today wasn't even a playoff team.
We've had very few injuries all season.
Not really. Chytil, Strome, and Kakko missed time earlier in the season and Blais is out for the year. Missing Lundkvist and especially Shesty who is their most important player while they aren't playing well in general is a problem. Igor has missed 7 games so far. And now Panarin is out for who knows how long. We haven't had a complete roster the entire year.
