Copp was only on the PP over Strome on that garbage time one that Kreider scored on right? Gallant was probably (rightfully) just experimenting in a lost game. Point still stands tho, Lafreniere has only seen PP1 ice when we were Covid depleted.

I think it was because Panarin left the game.

I love how Gallant won't take Strome off of PP1 for Lafreniere but he'll do it for Copp.

Yeah, was going to say this. He wasn't on the unit over Strome, he was with Strome. Panarin left the game.

I'm also growing tired of this line.

YOU ARE THE LEADERSHIP GROUP. The same people who are guilty of doing the things wrong. STOP MAKING THE SAME EXACT MISTAKES...

Now it has bled into Fox. Fox was a near perfect player tbh.. for a couple seasons and at the start of this season. His play was flawless, in the decisions he made. Lately? He's a mess

Go get back Martin for defense and someone like MSL for 5v5 offense.

The issue with Fox is just that opposing coaches and players are aware of his trickery now and pressure him more now, he needs to adjust. Last year he'd fake someone out and go around them but players aren't buying what he's selling anymore and a lot of times when they pressure him there are layers of pressure that he walks into. It happens to all good players he needs to adjust.

Still can't believe Kreider passing up the shot vs a sieve goalie off a royal road pass, on a 2 on 1, down 2 goals midway through the 3rd period. I honestly think that was one of the worst incidences of over passing from anyone on this team all season.

Dawes wasn't moved over yet, if Kreider shoots that off the pass - it's a goal and now it's 5-4 against a young team who struggles with momentum swings, there's a solid chance the Rangers actually would've tied up that game.

To his credit he called himself out. It's weird because Kreider is scorer not passer, especially this year.

He's what 23/24? This is his third season, he's still growing as a player. That said right now as I said he's become somewhat of a PP specialist. Maybe that's a bit harsh, he's still logging good minutes on a team that's top 5 in goals against but it's frustrating that his game outside of PP points has deteriorated.

1000% - I basically said the same thing somewhere in here. The instant he tried to go back to Mika on that play, I stuck a fork in them.

Fox doesn't have the foot speed or agility to pull off dumb shit. He won a Norris being Nik Lidstrom with a chin and caught Panarinitis.

His cute stuff will work a lot better when opponents have to respect normal high percentage plays.

Do it less often and it surprises players, do it every shift and it surprises nobody.

I'm okay with losses, and I both knew and expected that NYR aren't a contender yet. Too many guys still need to find that next gear. We're a young team--that's expected.

For me, what's disheartening is the lack of consistency and urgency. In my view, Panarin and Strome are the epitome of that issue. There's no fire in their games. They look disinterested. There's lackadaisical defense and effort. Based on that alone, I don't think Strome deserves an extension, points or not. They should really break them up, because they've been coasting the last several weeks.

I'd try something different....Panarin with any of Mika, Fil, or Copp as his center instead.

I agree with your last line. The fundamental flaw in the team's mindset. High pct plays lead to cute stuff opportunities after the opponent's structure has weakened. Also, Having to respect high pct plays provides the cover to do the cute stuff. It's not different than a pitcher in baseball. You can have a 101-mph heater but if there's nothing else in your arsenal, you're still going to be a 6-10 pitcher with a 4.68 ERA.

Still nice to know that Copp is already the 6th man over Laf.
It's a done deal at this point, but I think moving forward having two units would be beneficial for this team. Basically just roll your two top lines + 1 forward and a defensemen.

Kreider
Mika Vatrano Lafreniere
Fox

Copp
Panarin Strome Kakko
Trouba

I know there's no use imagining that they'll make any changes with the first unit clicking at such a high rate, but it's a thought I've had for a while to ensure that we're spreading touches and importantly moving away from this thing we've got going where the five guys on unit #1 think they don't have to do anything else for the team.

There is zero reason to move anyone not named Strome off the first unit when it's one of the best PP's in team history.

You don't have to think they're good reasons or agree with me. And I did say that there's no chance in hell it'll happen, but I listed two reasons I could see having two units makes sense for this group. 2016-17 Maple Leafs finished #2 in the league on the powerplay with two units--marner and mattews on separate units, just saying.

They were different teams we have no idea if that would work here.
