I'm incredibly far away from wanting to show Gallant the door like some in here, BUT, I will admit - a timeout after the 5th goal was needed.

But more importantly, what didn't I see with Laf that made him deserver that benching? I thought he was playing good - especially considering the the tire fire aka The New York Rangers tonight.

Should have had a timeout after the 4th at worst. I don't think he's ever used his timeout to change momentum, probably not his style. But it was stupid today. That said that challenge on the original 5th goal should have been the same thing as a timeout. Except it wasn't. Although, I think that's more on Igor. That 5th goal was horrendous, maybe the worst he's allowed all season. One thing Igor has been remarkable at was not allowing soft goals. Even in that game against St. Louis he was being sniped. That 5th goal was a goal where he looked f***ing scared.

He lost his man on goals by the devils on back to back shifts, you may not like it but the coach sees it. I did think he was playing great before that. I also think it’s a bit dramatic to say Gallant singled out Laf because he also benched Reaves, who is probably his favorite player.
I’m sorry but this is incorrect, neither goal scorer was laf’s man

Did he have a rough period? Yes but the only “lost his man” was a rebound out to the point he turned around the shot from the point came in and Mercer was standing alone….by himself…who was either zib or a defensemens man….who put the puck in

To say he lost his man which resulted directly to goals against is not a factual statement

Strome also played like a guy who knows the Rangers just traded for his replacement. I know Panarin got hurt but there was no intent by Sharangovich and the Rangers were regaining momentum. Selfish penalty to take by a supposed leader. Copp on the other had won a faceoff that led to a goal and got another A from the bumper position on the PP. imagine that from Strome?
I'm sure Strome sees the handwriting on the wall. I don't blame him though for going after Sharangovich. It wasn't intentional but sometimes that is hard to know on the ice and in the heat of the moment.

It's so f***ing over
Basically everything I said would happen with Igor has happened. I said the Rangers couldn't continue to rely on him like this or his play would slip. They called me a heretic. One day people in here are going to start listening to me. This Rangers team has yet to learn how to play the right way, and they don't have a leader behind the bench to help them to do it. I swear to Christ it's like people looked at Henrik's whole career and just went "THIS IS FINE, WE CAN JUST DO THIS AGAIN AND THIS TIME IT WILL BE DIFFERENT!"

Reactions: LORDE
Gallant with his worst performance of the season. Panarin/Fox/Kreider/Strome also with backbreaking awful decisions throughout the game. Nemeth & Braun was predictably a train wreck and not calling a timeout in the middle of 5 straight goals was ridiculous. The Laf benching is annoying, not saying it wasn’t warranted, but it’s a weird message to send.

I thought the new guys looked really good and the 1st period is what I’ll choose to dwell on. Burn the rest. It’s also not uncommon for the Devils to do this to teams.

Igor stunk up the joint and was definitely shell shocked in the 2nd. Not overly concerned with him

Hopefully this is a wake up call to not drink their own Koolaid. They’ll learn from it
They have won the next game after nearly every bad loss this year. This team knows who they are playing on Friday and will be much better.

Well, that was brutal. Even though we have won 3 out of the last 5, the 2 we dropped were to the Devils and Islanders both of which are way out of the playoff picture. That makes the sting a bit worse.

Think about the wins by those 2 scrub teams only hurts their draft position. It helps with the sting.

@TheBloodyNine @SnowblindNYR - all good, we can all split hairs on when a timeout was needed. You both have valid points.

My main concern was about Laf, but it appears it was just Gallant shortening the bench? I don't really like that answer - hope Laf just keeps pushing.
It's a non-answer from a non-coach. Gallant is a neanderthal and coaches like this is 1997 and not 2022. It's tough to fathom how the Rangers would hire a coach for a second time that put the development of one of the most important draft picks in franchise history in jeopardy.

This is not the game to make that comment. There were games this season the team would lose by a goal and people would be on the ledge. This game was utterly embarrassing.

Yeah it sucked but it’s 1 game. They’ve recovered quite well from these stinkers before, I have no reason to think they won’t do it again. The Devils have smashed plenty of good teams this year. We’ll be fine

So they don't ask him about the decision to not use a timeout in the midst of the Devils scoring outburst.

They don't ask him about Panarin's status.

They don't follow up on the LaFreniere question.

And sports media journos wonder why so many people think they're pointless.

They had three embarrassing losses in the last seven. Though I'd say the Wild game wasn't on the level of the Blues and this game.

They’ve also had some great wins during that stretch and have won 4 of 6 since the Blues game.
Yup. People sometimes underestimate how much travel takes it's toll. They just played 9 games in 16 days with 7 of them on the road. They now play 12 of their last 18 at home and the travel will be much less. It's going to help a lot.

As the Irish say, you can't polish a turd unless you start with a turd.
