I'm very interested to know the answer to this. Can Buchnevich play center?

No, I don't think so at least. He is quit the typical winger so to speak. Think Semin/Zherdev type. Its not about defense while that probably would be a factor too, but to be a center you always have everyone infront of you and 90% at least is about being in the right position on the ice. While these type of wingers constantly are relating to "one" D and finding ice and working towards getting openings in relation to that D.

The 2013 draft could turn out to be a real doozy.

That'd be lovely. We shall see.

Don't get too excited about any of these guys until you see them against NHL competition would be my advice.

They can look like world beaters up till that point....and then totally bust. But it sure is nice to see some of these kids filling out and becoming more confident.

Yeah, the Tambellini news is more encouraging than I would've expected. Wasn't he putting up most of his junior points on the powerplay though?

That's a good question Zil. I'm just not the guy to answer that for ya.

Anybody?

If you don't watch any of the prospects, sure, take this standpoint.

Cause people that do watch them have at least an idea of what they can do, and get naturally excited.

There's also a difference between "hyping a prospect" and "being excited for a prospect".

Yeah, Tambo had scored something like 65% of his points on the PP. He was better ES towards the end of the season and through his playoff series, but he was definitely posting a heavy majority of his points when the team was a man up.

Anyone knows if any full scrimmages will be made available? Can't someone mail or tweet these people to get them to put them online?

We have a lot of interesting kids at this thing, I don't get the negativity. The level of play there is real high, there might not be 1-2 kids already establsihed but we got more mature depth at least than previous years.

I think the last day of prospect camp is when the do a live scrimmage with Cerny commentating and doing staff interviews. They've done it in the past on the Rangers website and BSU.

Any chance Duclair makes the roster in October?

Really unlikely but yeah he could blow them away at Camp, and there could be injuries.
But the Rangers think Quebec, which will host Memorial Cup, and therefore qualify automatically, is the perfect situation for his development.

They love it when guys play deep into playoffs,

they believe Memorial Cup was great for Ryan Graves.

and Greenville's run was a great way to finish 2014 for rookies St.Croix, Nicholls (each with 15 pts in 18 playoff games) and Noreau, and 2d year Yogan (18 pts in 17 games) and 3d year Missiaen (2.12 gpg in 12 games)(probably earned his QO in those playoffs)

also Bodie wore the C for NCAA champs (his 2d frozen 4),
when Skjei also played in the title game

Lindberg was Finals MVP is Sweden in 2013

NYR will be very happy for Duclair to have long and healthy season in Quebec.

Personal opinion on notable prospects:
Buchnevich: obvious hit or miss prospect - has shown he has the skill but he needs to prove he has translatable skills re scoring talent. He can score/setup in odd man rushes. Does he have the engine to push and control the play from different situations? The minor leagues are filled with guys who can score off an odd man rush, but being able to gain control of the puck and and create offense in the move from zone to zone is the benchmark of today's NHL.
Duclair:
I've seen OLA reference the "engine" and he's exactly right in this sense. You need to play at a certain pace to have junior skill translate to pro play - if not you end up being a minor leaguer no matter the skill level (or become Jason Chimera - not the worst thing). The one contrast to Buchnevich with Duclair is that the engine is unquestionably there - he has something like Hagelin speed - his question is can he see the play when everyone else plays at a similar (or something close to it) pace, and the ice shrinks.

Their development will be interesting to track. Gotta hope for the best, along with hoping either Walcott or Nanne turns into Krug 2.0.

Things I've noticed watching the scrimmage highlights.

-Tambellini certainly does not look like a toothpick. Actually looks pretty thick to me. I know he put on weight this season but he looks good. Could be better though, like Leslie says. Has the potential for a 210 pound body. Imagine what a godsend that'd be?

-I was really impressed in tiny patches the speed and shot of Zamorsky. He picked a real nice corner in the 3rd scrimmage.

-Buch has been everywhere, half the highlights are plays he's involved in. Really liking him as a prospect.

-Halverson does seem to have trouble recovering after making a big save. Very aggressive. Reminds me of MAF. That's technique though, can definitely be taught.

-Noreau landed some huge hits. Ouch.

I am unbelievably excited for our 2013 draft picks.

Good comments, I've only scanned through the videos made available and haven't had the time to really identifye all the players, but I agree with what I've seen.

Zamorsky got that "a pro playing against kids"-aura on the ice for sure. Erixon looked the same way for those who remembers him (much can be said about Erixon, but he was fantastic in rookie camp and at Traverse). I like Zamorsky for sure, I don't really know how far off he is in terms of defense etc, but he is real good with the puck.

Question for Leslie: Do the Rangers view Tambellini more as a center or more as a winger?

I am hoping Halverson continues to develop. I was a little surprised on how high he was drafted. He has the size and ability to become a very steady goalie. He loves to handle the puck, but can be too aggressive at times. I will post updates throughout his season, I have season tickets.

This is a big year coming up for Duclair. As long as he doesn't fall completely off the map he should make the WJHC team, then he is guaranteed a Memorial Cup appearance. Could be a coming out year to get him high up on all those prospect lists.

July 2 Development Camp Report

Here is my report from what I saw and heard yesterday. Today is physical testing, so the media are not up in Greenburgh. I do have a list of tests though (although I can't swear its for today). It looks like a mini-Combine. The list is "Gait, Broad Jump, Vertical, Drift, VO2, Bench, Pull Up, Leg Squat, Manual Muscle Testing and Wingate."

Now to my report from yesterday:

Halverson–plays very big in net and has excellent lateral movement. He was almost perfect on first stops (one went through his legs during a shootout; he just did not get his stick down) and challenges the shooters very well. Very athletic, but he moves way too much (he makes the first save, but he then can have trouble recovering because he is unnecessarily out of position). This is fixable and the Rangers have an excellent goaltending coach to help. I have to say that since 2005 (when I first started to cover the Rangers), outside of Lundqvist, Halverson is by far the best goalie I have seen in a Rangers’ camp–and that includes Talbot.

Buchnevich–the most talented offensive guy in camp; dynamic, excellent offensive instincts, with size and skating ability. He looks like he has bulked up some since the last time I saw him, and he was strong on the puck yesterday. Buchnevich has one more year in Russia and speaks little English (I am being generous); the thing is I am bit skeptical (not quite sure why yet, but I am uneasy); stay tuned Friday, maybe I will figure out what makes me uncomfrotable about his play. BTW, although the Rangers had him at center inn camp he is expected to play on the wing.

Walcott–He has grit and great instincts, along with very good balance. Can move the puck, reads plays well and takes no nonense from others, even though he is not very big. Walcott does have some offensive upside too–a real boom or bust player. He does need to put on a little bulk, but oh can he skate. Outside of Halverson and Buchnevich, he was the most impressive guy on the ice yesterday.

Zamorsky–mostly did not see him much yesterday; which is good for a D-man. Just goes about his business, and then suddenly he beats you on an unbelievable shot. He does need some work on positioning, but he will get at least a year in Hartford to hone his skills.

Skjei–Looks pro ready to me–pro shot, good awareness in his own zone; has started to look a bit more offense minded, although still mostly own zone. What a shot. He always had one of the hardest shots within the organization, but Skjei has improved it. He took a shot from the point that had so much zip on it, the only reason the goalie (Skapski) stopped it was because he luckily moved into position as the shot was released.

Skapski–He looked fine. If Halverson was not in camp, we may be looking more at him, but Skapski does not look to have the same potential.

Nanne–Noticeable for what he did right on the ice, but did not make big plays. Plays well along the boards even though he is small. He can play forward, but yesterday was on D. Can be gritty. Player to watch as he moves into the college ranks–he is very raw, but Rangers’ kept talking about how impressed they were.
Tambellini–I loved what I saw of him yesterday. Excellent on faceoffs; very good size, which he has started to use well. He has bulked up some (still could use some more); very good kid with excellent hockey sense. He has offensive instincts, but does not look ready for pro play to me. Given that he is a 1994, I am not sure what next season holds, but really like him as a prospect.

Bodie–Noticed him several times as he distributed the puck. Excellent first pass, okay speed. Did not see much else in him.

Andersson–Although the Rangers said he was more impressive the first two days and not yesterday, this was not the first time I saw Andersson fall short of expectations. He needs quite a bit of work on D and did not make good decisions with and without the puck. I will see on Friday if he looks any different.

Noreau–Looks even bigger than last year. Made some good hits. Question is whether he has the speed and footwork for either AHL or NHL game. He was fine yesterday, but this is only development camp.

Logan Nelson–I was surprised to see after the scrimmage that Nelson was as tall as he is. Not my kind of player–plays small game and makes questionable decisions with the puck. Not impressed.

Nejezchleb–Can’t spell the player’s name, but he made several moves on the ice that I liked. He does not avoid physical play and has decent hands. Plays a solid game.

St. Croix–Apparently came into camp in very good shape and is looking to move up to the AHL this season. Despite the fact that he missed a wide open shot at the net, he generally was in the right place at the right time all scrimmage. Now he needs to get his confidence back. Hope to see more Friday.

Duclair–did not skate due to a groin injury (which I was told was not serious).

Nieves–is not in camp due to the fact that he needed to take classes at Michigan.

Great stuff as usual, Leslie. You've mentioned Walcott's skating quite a few times. Would you say he's on par with guys like McDonagh, J. Moore and Skjei? A step below?

The stuff with Skjei is going to be interesting to monitor. Could change the dynamics of the organization quite a bit if he goes pro this year. I would really like to see him go back for one more season to work on his offensive game some more, but it sounds like it might not be worth it.

He is as good at skating as the guys you mentioned, but he needs to bulk up a bit to play in the NHL, without compromising his skating speed. We will see if he can do it.
