I was thinking the Rangers might take a chance on him.

It's not something that will hurt to try but I'm skeptical that he's going to be a good fit. The Rangers are already a bit slow of foot with too many of our forwards not helping out the D enough. He might fit right in with that. But it's wait and see and a chance to be pleasantly surprised and we're not really going anywhere this season anyway.
Do you remember Ranger draft pick Chris Doyle ? He was drafted a few years back and was a shooter type guy...he played on a PEI Senior B club on the weekend . I asked a friend who was there and he said he still has the shot but it was going to take a bit for the rest of him to catch up with it.

They were also supposed to have Dave Ling dressed who had a cameo in Columbus. He was a former Canadian Major Junior player of the year at one time ...anyways he ended up skipping out on the Island team and signed with an Ontario club prepping for an Allan Cup run.

The next big gun they come out with likely will be Turk as a coach...he lives right where the team is located and Dion Phaneuf dressing[he lives here half a year] ....I would not be one bit shocked....old guys never get it out of their systems. Probably see Brett Gallant out with them as well...he is currently coaching a local girls team at the moment . With Brett Gallant-Ling the shit disturber and Phaneuf...they might be tougher than the Rangers .

Land of no calls..
This is the sort of move I'd be encouraged about if this was a team that was about to jettison a number of veterans blocking the way for kids and had a coach who was ready to give those kids a real opportunity to play to their strengths.

Sadly I expect Kaliyev to get bottom-six minutes and to be benched regularly while Laviolette talks about "learning to play the right way."

Not if he's pissing missiles into the back of the net every other night with that sweet release of his. Anyone know if he grew up a Rangers fan? He played for the JR Rangers at one point in his life too.

Dear hockey gods,

Yeah, we know we f***ed up with Kakko. And we're probably f***ing up Lafreniere. But we don't ask for much. One championship in 30 years and we just want one more. Do you have it in your hearts to give us one more chance, by letting us discover a gem in Kaliyev? We probably don't deserve it. After all, we still gave eleven-and-a-half-million dollars a season to have goaltending services. But you've already flogged us pretty stupid well this season for our transgression of winning the President's Trophy last season on smoke-and-mirrors play. Our pants are now down, and our ass cheeks have taken on the pattern of a candy cane. It hurts, we're embarrassed, and we're learning a hard lesson. We're lower than low, trolling the garbage bin that is the waiver wire for scrap parts. Please give us a tiny victory, a smidgen of happiness with Kaliyev. We're doing our best to course-correct. We're not even picking good-looking players; Kaliyev would not be described as having a GQ appearance. He's a local NYC product. We are trying to learn.

Thank you,
A Rangers fan

Kings fan coming in peace
A quick note of what made me a arthur kaliyev fan: the guy takes the puck off the wall, wheels through traffic to the mid slot picks the corner and scores.
Next time down the guy goes deep in the corner, behind the goal line, fires the puck at the net and scores.
Yeah. He's the one.

I’m slightly cynical about this move because it’s incredibly rare for a guy who was underperforming elsewhere to come here and improve.

But maybe I’ll be wrong!
Anton Stralman is our biggest reclamation project success and we chose not to resign him lol. Every now and again theres a Gustav Forsling reclamation. Heck even Spooner and Strome had good sucess while failing elsewhere. This is only a problem if it blocks minutes from someone you are actually trying to develop.

Watched some video on Kaliyev. I like it a lot. Big body and when he scores its from the middle of the ice which we desperately need. great shot and I wouldnt mind trying him on the PP. Nothing should be off the table because theyve been so bad. I assume he will go right into Kreider's spot on the wing. Vesey/Brodz on notice roster wise.

Totally. Look, I'm not raining on the parade. I have no issue with the pickup. I'm just not sold that the NYR is the best team to iron out this players' particular set of strengths and weaknesses. If Laviolette couldn't find more than 13mins and a tsp of PP time for Kakko, I'm not sure why he'll find it for Arthur. But, hey, Kaliyev could have one of those nice Vatrano runs early too. Either scenario I could see turning out not great. But there's also upside in the player for sure, so don't count me a hater.
Do you think Kakko earned extra 2 min that he’s been getting from Kraken with their top players while producing on exactly the same per game pace as here? No, but he’s getting his chance to proof himself (and Rangers wrong). Kaliev should get the same look see chance here from the coaching staff and it will be on him to take advantage of it. Is it possible - yeah let’s hope so and if not - he’ll be off to whatever next destination.

He's almost like kaapo but cheaper with a better shot. Likely Better offensively but not defensively.

He's perfect for this dysfunctional group

He's slow
He's kinda eh 5v5
His defensive game is suspect
He's a PP specialist who doesn't score many goals
He's a sniper who doesn't snipe much

And let's not forget the famous "lazy Russian"
narrative us old timers here used to enjoy.

He's Russian so of course I wanted us to draft him in 19.

Welcome to your spirit animal team AK34

It sounds like he has an IQ that this team severely lacks. Sadly, I doubt we'll see decent minutes from this kid. But hey, maybe we could be surprised. I'm being cautiously optimistic here, haha

His 5v5 metrics look ok, he’s just been a perennial 5% shooter lol. For a guy with his shot that’s surprising. If he doubles that he’s a useful piece. Put him with Panarin and Trocheck.
There’s a reason why no kings fan is happy about this. He has a great shot.. the issue with his time here in LA was the fact that the Kings were making him play like a damn grinder then you add onto the fact his line mate was PLD who didn’t do anything the entire season then yes he struggled. Anyone who played with PLD struggled because that lazy bastard never did anything besides coast.

They set up Kaliyev to fail time and time again. The Kings completely screwed him. Most honest Kings fan would tell you this.

In the simplest sense, in a lineup comprised entirely of players reluctant to shoot the puck, Kaliyev is potentially a good complimentary fit at no cost for a team that has almost nowhere to go but up.

I don't know where exactly he fits though. If we assume Kreider is in the lineup, maybe Edstrom sits? If the strategy for this team's fourth line is to cycle in the offensive zone, crash the net a bit, that might work. When he doesn't get handed higher quality playing time, there will be lots of "see, I told you so" comments, but a guy being claimed off waivers can earn his way into a greater role, or not at all.
