To be fair, I think your first few years in the NHL is part of your development as well. We've never had a lack of NHL defensemen coming through our ranks. That one guy that half the board really, really likes 100% broke out with the Rangers. So did Lindgren. We saved Stralman's career. Say what you will about Girardi but he wasn't supposed to be anything at all.
At forward, it's just this giant void. We told ourselves it's because we never picked high, which seemed valid at the time. Once we started picking high, we started having out of the box NHL forwards hit a wall. Something isn't right. It's who we are. We haven't developed a star up front since the f***ing GAG line. It's obviously different people in charge but sport teams develop cultures that transcend the people. We need to identify what the problem quick and actively fix it.
I don't buy that it's "boogah boogah New York" because then explain Henrik Lundqvist who was born in a village and became a Hall of Famer here.
