And there's the problem, this team is far more inconsistent than the top teams. It's a problem that I think stems from having too many players that need to play a line higher than they should be. Somebody (preferably replacing Slats) needs to sit down and plan out how the Rangers are going to be a competitive team for the next 5 years, instead of just focusing on today
the problem is that stepan richards and callahan are all in a bit of a funk at the same time. besides nash those 3 guys were expected to be our top forwards. Richards and stepan have points but they play inconsistent throughout most games

I just see it as one area in which the team is deficient. I also think the are deficient when it comes to face-off specialists. (Boyle's the only really go to guy here). It seems like the teams the go the farthest or have had the most success lately have a large line-up. Part of the reason the season opening was so disasterous, was simply that we played bigger teams. Physicality is part of the game. I know it's not the only piece. I would just like to have a guy like Prust (back in NYR), or a Kessler from Van, or even a Martin/Clutterbuck from the Isles. I think even a guy like Clarkson would have been a good addition this past summer. He's gritty and would be an excellent complimentary player for the finesse passing Richards...I liked the majority of the players on your list of keepers, especially 1-5.

I don't see any way we beat the Canucks tomorrow.
Pyatt wasn't bad, and if Dorset comes in it should be for Poop. Falk was better than DZ has been so far this year.

The schedule does get easier.

Right, they just need one new guy plus Justin Falk, when going against bigger teams. Strength and skill are both needed, for playing D. I think their D is like Pittsburgh's in a lot of ways, which means they have guys skilled like Letang, but when it comes to the playoffs they can't compete physically. Not just checking, but clearing a guy like Hartnell out from in front of the net and stuff like that.
Folks, I just thought of Niemi. All of a sudden he's great goalie. How many "all of a sudden great goalies" are there in the NHL? You put a goalie in with a good defense and a good system and they become these great goalies. We need to trade Hank. We need to bolster our offense and our defense. We have good pieces, we're usually in games. We're still giving up few goals. In the last 21 games we've given up more than 2 goals 5 times, more than 3 twice, and got 4 shutouts. We just can't score and have bad goals go in. With our defense we can have a solid but unspectacular goalie and make changes throughout the lineup. Hell, I think it shouldn't even be wholesale changes, we have good players.

No I'm complaining about his play being sub-par like you even said before in the playoffs.
I'm sorry, Callahan isn't irreplaceable and I'm not a fan of giving him 5+ million.
Well said on that last part, we don't know what team we're gonna get. It wasn't like it was in 11-12 where we knew on most nights we'll get the good team showing up and Hank was gonna stop just about everything.
We played well in the first but then started to play a game that suits Boston perfectly. McD and Girardi started to throw pucks away when they were tired. You need to be smart and cold with the puck against a team like Boston. Slow things down. Make them chase you some. AV got some work ahead of him. BR was not good. Cally was really sloppy with the puck. McD and Girardi didn't stand up. Staal played like he is blind. Our core didn't get the job done -- then you will loose a lead for the first time in 103 games or whatever.

The problem with this team is that the things that once made it passable, i.e., team defense and goaltending are now either in shambles, or are struggling mightily. It's exposing all of the other areas where this team is grossly underwhelming.
Yeah, to put it like this, the competition in this league can be compared to a jojo. Often you play teams that just don't show up.
We played really well in the first against a really good team that DID show up (unlike the last time we played them). The second was 50/50. But then Bos got to us. Our core did not respond, but lead the way in the completely wrong direction. Cally, BR, McD, Girardi. Hank did not come through. Loss.
Staal did play like he was blind. He's not nearly the player he was before the injury and it's sad. Hank must stop the GWG; no screen, no deflection, no win. Aside from that we played fine against the best team in the East who just got spanked and were motivated. I'm ready for Mcilrath. I'm so tired of watching Lucic and Chara take liberties. I want them to pay a price. I would take a stick in Chara's throat but an ass whooping for Lucic would be better. Bring the kid up, trade MDZ and let Falk and Moore play next to McI. Why not?
This is something that literally nobody realizes.
The 11-12 got dominated all the time, Lundqvist was just on another level.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaay too many behind the back backhand clear attempts (particularly by Staal) that are just flat out lazy and flat out stupid. Effort wasn't great after the 1st by nearly everyone.

I think the major problem with those endorsing big changes in the offseason is they took this foundation for granted. They presented an argument that the good things would remain the same and the offense would improve. It doesnt work that way.
I cant tell if you guys are just blind, or being purposefully ignorant.
Lundqvist was much better, but the team was doing a lot of things much better than they are now.
