Goodrow is why it’s important to keep finding talent to fill bottom six roles - via the draft and via free agency.

Becauae if you can find and develop those guys, eventually you don’t have to sign them to six year contracts because of league demand. That’s where your guys like Cuylle, or Barron, or maybe someone like Helenius become important.

It’s also why you sign guys like Richards, or give someone like Gettinger more time to develop.

Richards? Brad Richards?

Glad this isn't a full NTC situation but I hate that teams basically have to offer minimum six year deals to any UFA now.

How does it make any sense for the Rangers to structure it like that? Am I missing something?

The player agents prefer this structure.

“In this free agency period, we are focusing on structuring contracts that minimize the salary in the higher escrow seasons which means we are seeking to back-load contracts to save dollars,” Scott said. “At the same time we are looking to add signing bonus protection due to the fact that these are not susceptible to a buyout.”

The lesson remains true: Expect longer-term deals, those in the six, seven or eight-year range, to have a pronounced ‘hump’ in earning years in the middle. The key for agents will be to protect later-year earnings with signing bonus in order to lessen the blow of a potential buyout.

The front-loading of contracts is no longer the norm. The NHL and NHLPA agreed to changes in front loading contracts in the CBA and the players are concerned about escrow.

Not a fan of the length or NTC, whatever, nothing I say will change any of this.

Or Lemieux, or Howden, or Gauthier. All reasonable-looking acquisitions (McDonagh trade drama aside) but it looks like they might have struck out.

I'm fine with overpaying a little. This team has issues with faceoffs, closing out games and being tough to play against/showing up during big games. Drury had to overpay a little to get those things. I'm fine with it. We have ELC guys, Strome and Buch won't be here much longer, buyouts will be over and salary cap eventually going up.

If he has a big influence on how Chytil and Laf play then that's an added bonus. Shit, maybe he gets Kreider to play tougher again. Him, Kreider and Chytil playing together would be fun and he has the versatility to switch to C and Chytil W.
