I don't think this is devastatingly bad but god that contract sucks massive balls

way too long, AAV is bad but I could tolerate that on a shorter deal.

AAV matters but I’m concerned about term as well. Would not go over four years. A six year deal means he’ll be 35 at the end of the contract. Potential for paying him for too much of the downside of his career.

If we get outbid I’d prefer we do what Tampa will do, or is probably already doing. Find/develop our own Goodrow at a cheaper price.

I’m not sure what people expected. He was always going to get 6 years, it was pretty obvious after that number was leaked out immediately after they traded for his rights

I’m just glad it’s not above 4 million AAV

If he sucks in a couple years you pay for Arizona or some other bottom feeder to take him off your hands

Like I posted in other thread, why on earth would we do a signing like this, a depth signing for a huge contract when we are still trying to figure out what our core is, and what we need to pay them in a few years?

I like him as a player, but man... We already have questionable deals with Trouba and Kreider, so let's add to that. And I wouldn't be surprised if Buchnevich wasn't the only cap casualty we are going to have in the next 3-4 years.

in a world where brandon tanev, who never won a thing in his life, got a similar deal I guess we had no real choice.

I'm really disappointed. this isn't a truly horrible contract but this is bad. A very bad deal that has buyout written all over it.

Eh, not horrible. Not cracking the $4m mark is good.

We have the cap space to pay fourth liners for the next couple seasons, and after that I expect the cap to start rising precipitously.

If he can play up and down the line up and stays at a similar play level for most of the deal then it is not terrible. It does seem a tad high for a flat cap covid era though.

It’s around 3.6m so it could be higher or lower. It’s not brutal, but it’s not great. We definitely needed a player like Goodrow. Definitely over priced but that’s what happens during FA
