It’s a rebuild.
We steal Trouba. Flyers overpay Hayes. Soon we land Jack or Kappo. I’m going to say something I never say as a fan of 42 years. It’s great the be a Ranger fan.

You might even join the elite group of long term Ranger fans who didn't die in World War 2 who go to see not one but 2 Stanley Cups before dying of natural causes.

My comment was more in line with how many people were posting on here and the end of last year saying the Rangers have to be bad for a long time and should not go after good talent this offseason because the only way to rebuild is to be terrible. I, along with a few other posters, were saying that being bad ia not the point of a rebuild but getting talent is.

I’m just glad the Rangers are going after better talent and are not living by this myth that the only way to rebuild is to be awful for years while stock piling top 10 picks.

You are being a bit pedantic with "holding the horses".

Trouba is a smart move because he's a window move and part of a plan.

And we will most likely still not be great next year.

Unpopular opinion...but I think prime mcdonagh was much better than trouba...much better.
100% agree. Excited about Trouba but prime McDonagh has the edge. He was a bonafide #1 D. I see Trouba as a first pair guy but more a #2 than a #1. Still a very good player but a slight notch down from prime McD.

Yet for a RD, Trouba probably ranks up there just behind only like ~10-12 or so other RDs subjectively.

LDs, there are just more good ones and then a larger amount of those who are on a McD like tier.

I don't love Trouba as a 20 minute plus defender in all situations, but given the limited number of options, I get it. Yet with that limited number of options likely comes a larger contract than to an equivalent LD.

Prime McDonagh was so f***ing good defensively while being a positive contributor on offense.

Trouba is different. He's got louder tools and bite to his game that just wasn't there with McD but McD was the better defender. If Trouba has McDonagh level defense in him he's a Norris finalist.

I’m really surprised it’s even a debate who is better between Trouba and prime McDonagh. The latter pretty easily.

I think what’s encouraging about Trouba is that he’s on the upswing though. Maybe he’ll get there.

I’ve always felt he’s very overrated. I also don’t think we can build a true contender with him as the centerpiece of our D. There was a year or two period where McD looked like that type of player, but overall I don’t think he was either.

But man that trade was amazing. He’s still a heck of a player.

I think that's the whole problem. Prime McDonagh was incredible. It just was too ephemeral.

I figure we need at least one PPG (or close to PPG) player, three 60-point players (including all PPG players) and six 40-point players (including the preceding), if we want to be conventionally competitive. This year’s Blues team was an anomaly on so many levels.
I figure that's why you sign Panarin if you think the timing works out to put the team on the upward path. He's a PPG player.
Zibs @ 70
Kakko @ 60
Kravtsov @ ???
Kreider (if not traded) @ 55
Full season of Strome @ 40
Full season of Buch @ 40
That's potentially like 7?
Vesey and Names are capable but they really need a lot of ice time to get there.
Chytil, Howden, Lias all x-factors.

At the end of the day though, I think we need better play in our zone (defense) and special teams. We could score all the goals but still get nowhere if we can't keep a lead. A bounce back season from Hank behind an improved an D and we can be a playoff team again.

I had a Walt Poddubny rangers jersey as a kid, though I believe he only played 1 season for the Rangers.

*edit
I guess it was 2 seasons, scored 78 goals for us.

I watched way too many games in those days considering we weren't a very good team. Walt and Tomas were bright spots on that team. Obviously I had a favorite guy who wore #4 back then who was married to one of the finest women of the decade.

Concur with the bolded. I haven't missed more than a handful of his games during the past three seasons. He's quite good shutting down other teams' top lines and has offensive upside that was never really explored to the fullest in the Winnipeg. No wonder he wanted out. Laine's been receiving the same treatment throughout his ELC so who knows if he's next to go or if he'll pull out something similar and just try waste his RFA years with short contracts. If there's one thing the Jets are good at it's alienating their most promising talents, ha. I guess that tradition isn't about to change as long as Wheelers holds the reigns by Chevy letting Maurice stay in the team.

I wonder how much Trouba will ask though. Will he settle for something like 8m AAV that would be close to what his worth of his aiming to make it closer to 10m per season. Hopefully those rumours aren't true and he has team's best interests in heart as well as his own. Funnily enough I haven't been paying much attention lately in regards to what's been happening in the league and only noticed he had been traded yesterday and felt a bit surprised.

I get why it went down this way but this trade is just so lopsided in a way that you don't really see in the NHL.

We know the circumstances but this has to be one of the worst trades for another team in the last twenty years.
This "rebuild" is doing a 180° and looking like a "re-tool".
Everything is happening so fast. Honestly, I believe I may be one of the few that "aren't" on the Trouba bandwagon. Amazing how everyone has been clamouring for his aquisition, so.......here he is. He will cost us some big money but I suppose he is an upgrade defensively over Neal. Addition by subtraction. Just watch Pionk turn into quite the all around defenseman. We just may regret this move.
So, we effectively traded Hayes and Pionk for Trouba.
From Winnipeg's side.......they had Hayes for a PO run (that didnt work out) and got back their 20 pick for a player they couldn't afford anyway. Gonna be interesting to see who that 20th pick is, and how he turns out. We could have, should have another prospect. Suppose a bird in the hand......?

Much easier role. We didn't anything close to Hedman to carry the load.

While we didn't have Hedman, McDonagh led the Lightning D in ES TOI/G and SH TOI/G. The difference in the load seems to me to be more about offensive play, because his defensive load was the same as it was here.

Looking at zone starts, it looks more to me like McDonagh lightened Hedman's load than the other way around.

We traded 3 months of Hayes and pionk for lemeiux and trouba.

Even if pionk gets better defensively and is an top 4 guy this trade is still slanted in our favor.

McDonagh just had one of the best seasons of his career... probably 2nd after 13-14.

I actually saw an article from Tampa the other day that kind of summed up my feelings and concerns with McD.

It basically talked about how vital he was during the regular season in helping the team to overcome injuries and other things, but how he basically was a shell of that player in the playoffs. And of course coaches talked about him being banged up and soldiering on, etc.

But it also highlighted part of the problem with McD at this point. When you ask him to assume that higher role, it just eats up his body. So by the time you get to the playoff battles, he's already in rough shape.
