Andy Haines must have talked to Jack Suwinski more before tonight's game than last night's game, obviously. That's how this works

Paul Skenes holds all the Infinity Gems, the powers of Greyskull, has the Phoenix Force, knows the anti life equation, holds the 9 rings of power, has the triforce of power, wisdow and courage, and can kill 2 stones with one bird.

That was a nice and also important win, not squandering a big series W after the Dodgers bats finally woke up. We'll see, but I think you chalk tomorrow up as a L and keep it moving. Buehler has been solid but still hittable. It would really be something if the Bailey Falter show keeps rolling.

I don't think there's much to nitpick in a game like that. Mlodzinski was able to pretty much throw strikes which kept the door from being flung wide open at a pivotal point, and it's nice to see the good version of Chapman. Almost forgot it's in there.

One thing I kind of wish we had been able to do was give Davis the reps against Paxton, but Grandal had hit him ok and contributed to the explosive inning. Great start to the homestand and also this important stretch of games in general. It would be insane to pull off the sweep.

Not that it really matters at this point, but Fangraphs officially upgraded Jones to a 55 FV and he graduated as the #16 ranked prospect in baseball.

Skenes is a 65 FV and will graduate as the #4 ranked prospect.

Skenes wasn't overly sharp yesterday after the 1st inning. I thought his fasatball was great early and then waned a bit. Slider was sharp but didn't get many bites. Splinker and change were not good.

He simply missed his spot on Ohtani's homer and hung a slider/curve to Pages. With Ohtani he should have been offspeed down and in (back foot) or up and away. You can't just keep throwing gas to a hitter like that. Any miss in the middle is going to get hit hard, even at 100. Especially once they've had an AB to get a feel for the speed.

Still, the fact that he and Jones pitched 11 innings and gave up a combined 3 runs to that lineup speaks volumes about how much talent we have in those arms. And that's not even mentioning how good Keller has been since the beginning of May + Falter throwing like a #2 in easily the MVP performance to date for us.

There is no excuse with those 4 arms, why we aren't a winning baseball team. None.

As an early update for the NL ROY, which matters to make sure Jones and Skenes don’t get credited with a full year of service, here’s where some of the top rookie performers are sitting in the NL:

-Jones: 4-5 record, 3.25 ERA and 3.74 FIP
-Skenes: 3-0 record, 3.00 ERA and 3.01 FIP
-Yamamoto: 6-2 record, 3.32 ERA and 2.69 FIP
-Imanaga: 5-1 record, 1.88 ERA and 2.79 FIP
-Winn: .309/.359/.446 slash line, 130 OPS+ and 2.2 bWAR
-Ortiz: .288/.389/.487 slash line, 148 OPS+ and 1.8 bWAR

Honestly, I think neither Skenes or Jones will finish top-2 in NL ROY if these trends continue. The other great performances and likely splitting the vote will probably have both of them at 4th or 5th at best.

Winn and Ortiz coming on recently have made it more crowded.

I think it's going to be tricky. Imanaga will have a similar innings type of situation as both Jones and Skenes. Yamamoto is not really shining like a lot of people thought he would. If Jones stays in his form and doesn't have more than 1 or 2 starts like the Tigers blip, I think he could make a real case, which would be the best situation for us because Jones can win the extra pick due to being on the roster in time.

If Skenes doesn't slow down, then the race is plenty open for him to make his case in a fairly decisive way. Bibee was able to last year with 140 innings. There's no denying that Skenes is basically the face of young players in the league... I just don't think it's too farfetched.

I don't see any way our guys win ROY. You have multiple big names, on multiple big market teams that are going to get way more fanfare (than Jones specifically) over a league wide scale. As long as the 2 Japanese dudes keep throwing up those types of #'s, it's a closed door. Counting stats like wins/losses mean more than they should and the Dodgers/Cubs offer a significant shine over the Pirates as far as marketing goes.

And that's not even counting the hitters as Emp mentioned.

Skenes would have to absolutely dominate, with no restrictions on innings the rest of the way to have a shot. Possible, but that's putting the cart before the horse as it stands today.

MLB is marketing this themselves. Yesterdays game was a matchup between Superstars, Skenes v Ohtani. Plus, we're the Cinderella team compared to CHC or LAD.... which might skew votes. The plucky underdog.

I don't think Jones is gonna have a dog in the fight, only because MLB is already in love with Skenes and his influencer GF.

Skenes has a very good shot unless we deliberately shut him down in September and hope that Shota and Yamamoto completely overtake the narrative. Everyone knows who Skenes is, he is probably better known than any pitching prospect ever. The MLB YouTube channel aired his entire 1st inning yesterday. Everyone knows who his girlfriend is, some of the voters probably (fill in the blank) to her right now.

I could even see there being a guerrilla campaign for him to win it and get rid of the year of service time just to spite Bob Nutting.

It's too early to tell either way IMO. We know for certain that a May callup (in Skenes' case) is not too early when the field is open enough. Imanaga looked poised to cement himself as the favorite, and I think by betting odds he has emerged as the clear favorite, but he's had some rocky starts lately.

For now, I think it's worth seeing a few more starts from Skenes and then how he looks once he has 6 or 7 under his belt and some clear film that teams can game plan for even more.

There's so much summer left and I think in many other years, if you tried to go back in time to the first week of June and look at the season up to that point, you wouldn't really be able to predict who would definitely win it.
