Davis just needs to get a couple of balls to bounce his way. That was a nicely located hit and it got him a double. His issues are all mental I think.

i think davis has the wrong makeup to be successful. you can’t practice your way out of a slump. you can’t press and try harder to succeed against major league pitching. you have to have some chill to accept the reality of trying to hit these guys

Raise it!

Loved Jones and the pitching. Hated Cruz and Cutch. Just burned out from watching Cruz, man.

Impressive and gritty start from Jones. I don't love to see the whiffs down, but it's hard to argue with the results and even moreso that he's able to do that, facing three MVP hitters 3x and do so without his most pristine stuff.

It seemed like the Dodgers we almost being extra passive to get into good counts and then try and do damage against him, but Freeman was the only one who got any real traction. I'll be interested to look at some stuff numbers over coffee tomorrow morning.

In a way, this was a game that we lucked into winning. I don't mean that disparagingly, but I don't know how else to see a 1-0 victory vs the Dodgers. Glasnow was pretty dominant and the bullpen behind him did their job too. You don't win without popping the solo HR.

Golden opportunity now to pick up the series W. Paxton has been reasonably hittable, so tomorrow's pitching matchup definitely favors us. It will be fun to see how Skenes tries to answer the bell after Jones.

When is the last time that a K an inning is a disappointment? Cole?

Keller at #42, Jones at #54 and Skenes at #113 after only 4 starts in pitching fWAR is not what I had on the bingo card. That is a contender starting top 3 already and there is a decent chance of improvement on top of that. If only the bats weren't bottom 5 in the league.

The bats are bottom 5 in the league because we're employing 2 putrid hitting coaches to run the ML roster. People like to shit on Haines (rightfully so) but Shelton was a hitting coach before getting this seemingly endless campaign as Bucs manager.

Shelton is literally John Russell with a much longer runway to impart his baseball wisdom. That's how pathetic his record is as manager.

Marin is the only coach I'd definitively keep beyond today. But we're almost surely in the "hoping something changes this winter" realm.

I just meant that I don't love seeing the swing and miss down in the past few starts for Jones but I think it is more of a perception thing than something backed up by the numbers. Bref says he had 10 last night. That's not quite the incredible run he's had for a lot of the season but it's still plenty good. His only down games were the Detroit start and then the road San Francisco start.

I'm not certain, but I think he's second or third in the league in swinging strikes.

In any case, I agree with the rest of your post. The foundation is there for success and the opportunity for a Wild Card is still probably in play for a decent while unless we see a total tail spin. IMO momentum is a funny thing. The pitching puts them in the position to do serious damage. If the bullpen can all of a sudden click for 2-3 weeks straight, we might mostly start singing a different tune at the end of the month. I think the framework is there.

The pitching is really thin, though. Already with Priester we are starting a guy where we expect to lose the game. Who knows where things are going with Falter and there is nothing in AAA.

Need Perez back really quickly and another guy to emerge. Burrows is probably 2 months away - I'm not sure who else steps in. My gut says that Braxton Ashcraft has found it at Altoona and he could probably come up and get MLB hitters out right now.

It is beyond time that we go for this.

I would get Robert and consider making a run at both.

Something in the realm of Chandler and Davis for Robert. To get Crochet as well, I'd do Chandler/Davis/Termarr and add. I don't think we should rule out more pitching. We are already thin and one injury away from terrible there.
