I was going to comment that Gonzales' uptick in strikeouts in the past few games had concerned me, only for him to hit a HR and double in the second game

Going 1-1 in these two games is all that should be expected IMO, especially with getting Skubal in the first matchup. Just gotta close out this game now.

Nice to see Cutch getting some BABIP luck (or positive regression?) after getting screwed a bunch earlier this year.

4 run cushion still doesn't inspire much confidence with this bullpen.

Good and needed bounce back after getting smacked by Sale and Skubal. Only downside is Rowdy didn't go 0-fer so he may get more leash.

I am pretty confident that Jones' results will catch up to his stuff in the long term, but in the minors he had a track record of underwhelming results. He should be viewed as a very high upside prospect that has flashed that upside early on, but as more of a #4 starter for the next couple years as he learns how to pitch.

It's hard to hate on anyone but tellez, hayes maybe cruz right now. Their ABs are hurting.

Jones is doing what he can. 21 year old near rookie. He gonna have some slack cause of the potential.

Couple big hits after some shit fielding, boom, you're down by runs

Imanaga getting lit up...not ideal for mission: avoid Skenes in ROY top 2.

I think realistically though we are shutting Skenes down in September to hope that Yamamoto comfortably overtakes him.

Cruz is up and down with the bat. Hayes is up and down. But rowdy tellez has always sucked and the fact that they hang on to this guy because of some connection in 2017 is the biggest group of “old boys club” losers I’ve ever seen

There's probably not much sense in trying to analyze it, but I suspect Tellez at least has rope until the end of the road trip. We're already beyond any reasonable sense of him deserving to be DFA'd, so it could happen at any point, but it seems like they are trying to drag it out further.

The x-factor might be the extent of Perez's injury and how we'll manage the roster around it. It should be relatively straightforward to swap him with Priester, but it might be an occasion for additional roster shuffling.

We have Berrios, Kikuchi, and Bassitt up next, so that's already one game where Tellez is unusable, which is fairly generous given that he's unusable against righties too.

Ultimately it's just guesswork, as there's no reason he's around even for this series, so if he is, then it's possible for them to just keep kicking the can down the road through the next homestand (where at least in theory it should be a heavy diet of RHP, unless we get Paxton).

Jones had his first real ugly stat line after being basically a quality start machine, but I'm not really concerned by anything that I am seeing. I think the biggest indicator might be the walks. They've occasionally popped up, but it's actually somewhat of an accomplishment to still be so efficient even when the prime stuff is absent.

I think there's some hand waving to be done at some of the results today, as there were multiple plays that should have been made behind him, but even so, it was a bad start. I never watched a ton of him in the minors, but he had some difficulties with walks even when he was striking out guys consistently. I haven't seen stuff numbers from today, but that's still maybe the biggest indicator of continued success, especially with the control being fine. It's still the kind of thing where I'd need 2 or 3 more starts like today to really raise an eyebrow. He'll definitely get a big test with the Dodgers up next week.

There is a big difference between a 6IP 3ER start and a 6IP 1ER start. I would prefer a 5 or even 4.something start with 1ER.

My overall point is that Jones' results are regressing which is to be expected. He has always been ability over results and that is fine because he has time to translate it.

I think in 2 years he is a great pitcher and complement to Skenes. But it would not surprise me at all if in 2024 his ERA creeps above 4.

Best hitter in the lineup in the 6 hole tonight.

You can apparently be this stupid and manage a ML roster.

Gonzales has been an absolute RBI farmer in the middle of the lineup, why mess with what is working? Gonzales has 16 RBIs in 19 games for the Pirates and is hitting .375 with runners in scoring position.

Gonzales hitting 5th or 6th is exactly where he should be hitting.
