Vogelbach plays in the field for the first time and immediately commits an error.

I'm so thoroughly over him at this point. I don't want someone on this team who can literally only hit off of righties and do nothing else.

Can we stop this Bryse Wilson experiment already? At what point with the Pirates has he been good enough to justify the amount of slack he has received?

Pathetic organization. Not sure if Cherington can actually evaluate upper minors talent. But like, I'm sure Henry Davis is reading 48 Laws of Power or something.

People are noticing Solometo. BP talking an FV60 grade on him is kinda awesome, as it reinforces my stated beliefs in this kids very bright future.

Bishop – plays with a certain swagger. he believes deeply in his talents. small sample size, but it’s the best bat speed he’s seen from a teenager. plus raw pop. does well against fastballs. needs to work on his offspeed recognition. plays a very good center field. displays double plus speed and above average instincts. brought up similar prospects in johan rojas and miguel bleis (who the pirates saw today), and said bishop is similar except has louder tools.

Solometo – very good movement on his sinker. generated a lot of poor contact with it. can become one of the best sinkers in the minors with more velocity. change-up is a decent pitch with similar movement to his sinker, but with a lack of good separation of velocity between that and the sinker. rarely used his slider, and it lacked good movement, but he located it well. but he says if he stays healthy, gains velo and improved changeup..he could be a future 60 value prospect.

So how sure are we that Ke'Bryan Hayes is a good major league hitter?

Career MiLB stats (2017 PA's) - .279/.353/.401/.754

2020 MLB stats (95 PA's) - .376/.442/.682/1,124

2021-2022 MLB stats (634 PA's) - .262/.330/.371/.701 (94 OPS+)

He's certainly an excellent defender, but few players in history have had their reputations pimped more over 3 good weeks than Hayes' September of 2020.

It's the Pittsburgh syndrome. I've fallen for it. I was among those getting overly excited after that 1 month stretch, because it represented something beyond the glove which was already known. Teams adjust. So do hitters, but the truly elite are able to counter any pitcher and any scheme. Hayes lacks raw pop and is a very defensive oriented hitter as he stands now. I do wonder if he adopted a more aggressive approach, how it would help push teams away from the inside part of the plate. Get up there expecting to pull the hands in.

He's certainly decent at the dish. The numbers bear that out, but in an overall sense, the current version of Hayes is about that, decent. He'll flash higher, and lower, but comes back to the meaty part of the curve. Obviously the D is his calling card right now.

I mean this franchise had people convinced Greg Polanco was going to break out and be Barry Bonds a year before he ended up in Japan.

A couple of comments:

1. Lumping in his 2021 with his 2022, when his 2021 was plagued with wrist injuries that caused him to underperform, is insanely disingenuous.
2. I don't think it's fair to say that Hayes "lacks pop". He's 26th in the MLB in hard hit ball % this year according to Baseball Savant. His average exit velocity is 91.5 MPH, which is 35th and right around where guys like Trout, Olson and Donaldson are at.
3. What Hayes lacks is an exit velocity that yields homeruns. Hayes' launch angle is 7.9 degrees, which is the 42nd lowest. He hits the ball hard and often, he usually just hits line drives. This relates to his barreled balls rates being so bad, he hits the ball hard enough but doesn't get the launch angle needed.

In reality, Hayes is an above average contact hitter who hits the ball hard, but lacks the appropriate swing to get HRs out of doubles. He is a swing adjustment away from being a .850 OPS guy, it's just a question of whether he's capable of doing that.

Hmmm.....watching hockey tonight, but saw in the box score that the Pirates scored 2 separate runs, on 2 separate bunts.

Roansy had no command tonight.

But I blame the offense, as usual. No killer instinct. No ability to score add-on runs. When the other team sends out their weak relievers, that's an invitation to add on. But we put together terrible ABs again and again and again against them. Something is rotten in this organization. Cherington, Shelton, the hitting coach, etc.
