Cruz with a double and a walk in 4 PA's in the 2nd of the back to back. Nice to see. Small steps in the right direction.

Wonder how long it'll take until Bae is given a shot. He can play all over the field for you and he's quietly having a solid season once again. Still just 22 years old and he's got the ceiling of a ML leadoff guy.

I'd honestly like to see guys like Mitchell, Martin, Bae all up within the next month (obvviously along with Cruz/Contreras). Martin can take Yoshi's spot and hit against righties while Chavis gets the LH's. Mitchell would have to be the last guy on the bench as OF seems pretty tied up with 2 surefire starters in Reynolds/Gamel, but I will continue pushing for him to get time. I think he's one of those guys who goes under the radar and then carves out a solid big league career. He's never really gone nuclear, but he's steadily improved and you can see a pretty consistent upward trending arrow in his on field performance. Nothing really pops, but he's at least average or better across the board in all the prime categories.

Basically, bringing 4-5 players like that up over the next 2 months will generate interest and give us a decent glimpse of their potential. I don't trust Shelton to actually use them regularly or bat in the same place within the lineup, but we simply cannot continue rolling out the VanMeeter's of the world when there are deserving and seasoned top 30 prospects in AAA right now.

Look at the strike vs ball splits and subsequently walks. His inability to locate pitches is just as much a problem as his flat fastball. Watch Bednar throw the same pitch and you'll see 2 vastly different qualities.

Maybe he'll continue the trend of more highly touted prospects to leave and find success, but he's not close to being in the class of Cole, Glasnow, Musgrove.

I was basically the only Pitt guy that had Kenny Pickett in the NFL, possibly in the 1st, after his 8yd performance against Clemson at the end of his sophomore year. The moment Whipple got hired I called it.

So I tend to make these calls, and stand by them in the face of criticism. And I get it - he's giving us plenty of reasons.

But I still see something there. It's all mental with this kid. That's why I was so happy they brought in Perez...

Cruz turned a corner a few weeks back, the improved patience was much needed. I've also noticed he's been doing much better with the up & away fastballs. Hopefully he made the leap mentally. We'll see.

For a few years now, I've considered Mitchell a Bryan Reynolds type developmental player - doesn't wow at anything - but has good all around skills. It could all come together fast at the end of his development cycle. I don't expect the Reynolds outcome, but it certainly possible he's a legit player.

I'm still of the opinion he needs a strong June for the call up.

Bae and Martin are interesting lottery tickets that I don't believe will hit, but I've been wrong before, and that's the nature of "lottery tickets". I too would prefer to see them play in Pittsburgh over the Yoshi's & Tucker's of the world.

I've not been able to keep up with Gonzales this week. Has he changed anything that led to this breakout? Because I think he needs to.

EDIT: Ok I got a look @ Gonzales on PP this week. Looks like he's stopped keying in on hitting fastballs for home runs, and is staying back on the breaking balls that he's been swinging through this year.

Burrows with another strong start so far, through 5. 2 hits, 2 walks, 5 K's. Probably done as I think he went past 80 pitches. Fighting the command somewhat but he's hitting spots when he needs to. Peguero with a triple. Gonzo just went the other way for an RBI. Connor Scott heating back up. A Matt Fraizer sighting!

Thompson throwing a quiet but very nice game so far through 4. Of course being down 1-0 against Wainwright means we have no chance, but Thompson throwing a lot of strikes tonight. 11 of 15 first pitches for strikes.

Connor Scott 2-2 now, on base all 3 times down in Altoona. Gonzo just walked after a single the last time up. Hitting streak up to 8 games I think, once again on base multiple times.

Peguero with a really productive out. Runners on 1st and 2nd, grounds out to 1B, moving runners up. 2 outs, and Citta drives them both in with a single.

How does an MLB team put 5 players hitting under .200 in your starting lineup, and Reynolds at .214 that's 6 players who are almost a guaranteed out right now.

5-3 now, need at least a sac fly here.

EDIT: Castillo and Chavis strikeout.

EDIT: 5 consecutive K's to end the game. Our lineup is pathetic.

Things do appear to be heating up. Cruz & Gonzales struggling early was not a surprise. Pleased to see them both figuring some things out - and adjusting their game - something they'll need to do often throughout their careers if successful.

I've lost about 2/3rd's of my baseball time this spring, so it's nice to see an update like this now and then.

Eager to watch Priester again, although I seem to be the only one here that feels that way.

I missed the game last night, looked interesting on Baseball Savant:

The MLB League Average has fallen significantly, probably ball related, currently running .235 ....

Sarris: Four hitters who are adjusting well to the new ball and new offensive environment

Lost Spring Training time matters for hitters. Given what's being said around the League about the balls, I'm willing to give Reynolds a pass on the poor start. Lots of guys are struggling in the new hitting environment.

Hayes has cost us so many runs with errors this year. When he does boot one it's been costly. Glad he's kept the average and contact rate higher this year but I've been disappointed by his D to say the least. I'd have figured he'd be into July/August before he hit 6 errors.

Cal Mitchell should be up sooner than later. 2-2 tonight. I know he's not going to play over Reynolds or Gamel, obviously, but Suwinksi, outside of a few bombs and nice plays in the OF hasn't been a difference maker. He's .171/.556 through 61 AB's.

Numerous DFA candidates up on the ML roster right now. Yoshi, VanMeeter, and Marisnick are not helping us now or in the future.

I'd like to see Martin get a crack at righties. Bae has been raking and can play all over the place. Versatile and probably the closest thing we have to a Adam Frazier below the ML roster right now.

Right there are 3 guys who would at least bring some intrigue as they're all decent prospects.

And then of course Contreras coming up from the P side of things would be very welcome.

The team has quit on Shelton. I mean, they're a bad group of baseball players, but we need some very large changes/jolts to the ML roster/staff.

Cruz and Martin homered today. Cody Bolton, a top 10-15 prospect 2 years ago, had another nice outing. He's only 23 yet, and this is his first full year since TJ surgery 2 years ago. Maybe he'll provide some relief for the ML staff. Wilson, Brukbaker, and Keller can all be shot into the sun as far as I'm concerned.

Gonzo had 2 hits. Fraizer had 2, Marcano 3. All 3 are hot right now. Nicolas got roughed up though.

Matt Gorski hit 3 bombs including a walk off today, now up to 17 on the year for Greensboro. I'm skeptical given he's 24. He needs a promotion asap regardless. In 37 games, he's hit 17 dingers, 37 rbi, and is .294/1.131 thanks to slugging% well north of 700.

Either way, I want some real changes by June 1st. Get rid of Shelton and his staff (I'm guessing earliest that happens is off season though I don't think he'll be fired) and get some of these performers up from AAA over the next week or 2. The ML club is completely unwatchable right now.
